Lloyd, are you sure your using XDirectFB?  That's a X server that runs
on top of DirectFB as described at
http://www.directfb.org/index.php?path=Development%2FProjects%2FXDirectFB.
 Your developers may be using the X backend for DirectFB or the SDL
backend for DirectFB, both of which allow hosting a DFB session in the
X environment.
