Thanks for the answers. I did some more research and found that firefox can be compiled with directfb support. I was not going to use DFB as a replacement for X (I know that the vast majority of apps only work in X). I am also working on a project with less speedy hardware so it is critical that I find some type of GUI replacement that has speed.
In your opinion, how much faster is the DFB over X (twice, three times, 25%, etc). I am working with a 667mhz processor, 128mb RAM (32mb goes to graphics card). So I am not dealing with a terribly fast machine. What are the stats of the hardware you are working with? Can you time how fast DFB can load your apps versus X?
Thanks,
Dave

MUCH smaller than X. This is a plus. And it is spiffy.
The advantage X has over DirectFB are numerous:
a) many apps ONLY work with X
b) DFB is not a "direct replacement" for X. In fact, for our development, we
are USING XDirectFB (which basically gives you a DFB screen on an X window:
great for our developers!)

Dunno. Again, we are building our own app so for us it is a moot point.
Personally, I would say "maybe". Seems more like a YMMV type question.

Hmmm... dunno if I've ever seen any for X, much less DFB. For the processor we
are using (which is rather slow by todays standards) it moves pretty spiffy.
The same processor running X ... well, doesn't move nearly so quickly!
Okay, not much of a benchmark. :P But again, that is a YMMV both on the
processor and the graphics card.
Personally, if you are looking at this as a direct desktop replacement for X
for a workstation, I would just go with X.
If it is for something that you can control (like a embedded project), then it
is ideal.
Sorry I can't get more specific!
Cheers,
Lloyd
