I agree Matt. You can search for my previous comments about this sort of thing
by searching for the the subject "[lopsa-discuss] Professional standards." back
in April of '09

My interest in getting any form of cert was to be able to provide a means for
my employer (current or potential) to be able to jump *past* the "do you know
what an i-node is" questions and know that bearing that cert shows that I have
attained a minimum standard of achievement. Yes my experience speaks more of
what I have done and can do but it's nice to be able to get past the elementary
crap early on.

I still am of the opinion that a cert, while not being the be-all-end-all, if
properly developed and administrated, can provide an assurance of a specific
level of achievement. I ask, does a "CarFAX" assure you of a perfect used car?
No, you'll still kick the tires but it helps you know that a number of things
are already accounted for and you don't have to examine the frame for signs of
bending/fixing.

Let me ask a question of the group. Some of you have "LOPSA" listed in your
sigs? Why? Isn't bearing that mark a point of pride that shows you take your
business seriously and believe that you provide a particular level of
professionalism to your employers? What's the difference between having LOPSA
listed in your sig and getting a cert? We know that any moron (not meant to
offend anyone) can pay for a membership but not everyone can pass an XYZ
certification test.

My other reason for getting a cert, i.e. RHCE is to prove to *myself* that I
know these things and to identify areas of my experience/education that need to
be worked on. I already know a lot but know that I don't know all there is to
know..... Wow, what a crappy sentence.....

I'll go back to the corner and listen.
