The 70-200/2.8 comes with a tripod collar as standard.
The 70-200/4 does not come with one.

Agreed again. But if you REALLY don't like it I am
sure somebody can color it black for you. Writing
that, actually I think I once read about a company who
does just that for the big glass.

Even without IS and the white color this is a great
lens in my opinion. It is also the one that in average
I use the most.

Depends on your definition on 'being forced to go
digital'. Some people already are while others won't
feel that way for at least another decade.
As the density of pixels increases more and more the
requirements for lenses are getting thougher. Also it
seems for the higher end bodies we are going toward
approx. 35mm CCDs/CMOS.
