That IS interesting. Who would have thought that something so
simple could be so functional.

Why didn't Canon incorporate the AF assist lamp into the flash
head of other cameras instead of going the disco route? I'd
rather have an ugly camera body than ugly pictures.

This was the deciding factor for me in buying the 420EX. I was
initially looking at the 550EX, but despite the extra power (and
significant extra dollars), I didn't want to be impeded when it
came to AF. Flash photography is a pain when the frame is matrix
metered for the center focusing point, especially when contrast
in the scene is signficantly varied (and when one NEEDS AF assist
in poorly lit situations). Also, from experience, the 380EX was
insufficient on only a few occassions, and not even the 550 would
have saved me in those. So the 420EX was a decent power upgrade
and a major AF upgrade.
