Hi Collyer and List,
Some great advice so far. As Vesa pointed out, the infernal
focus design of the 28-135 results in a close focus distance
of 50cm [20"], but the focal length is about 60mm! You can
achieve about 1:4 close-up with this setup.
Maximum magnification on my 28-135 occurs at a setting of
70mm at closest focus distance (about 34cm [14"]). Canon
seems to be very conservative in specifying focus distances.
I suspect that the EOS 1v will be very heavy to carry on
your travels, particularly if you also intend to use one
of the Speedlite flashes.
There would be an advantage to using a much lighter body with
an on-board flash, such as the REBEL 2000, or theElan 7E.
OTOH, if you intend to shoot at higher magnifications,
(e.g. postage stamp) it is also possible to use the 28-135.
For versatility, a set of 3 extension tubes will give
you the highest magnification, but you will need a tripod.
If you intend to handhold, the 500D is easier to use, but
will not give as much magnification. See:
