Then you'd be surprised to learn that a G3 when used in RAW capture format
and used within the G3's ideal light levels that a G3's can yield images
that are easily a match for a 10D up to about 8"X10" or so. The only thing
really holding back the G's in terms of image quality is the same thing that
limits most P&S cameras or any cameras using the smaller cheaper sensors,
noise.

It's not the number of pixels but the photosite size that matters. Image
quality is more dependent on sensor size, photosite size and sensor
characteristics than the number of photosites. Look at the Kodak 14N and
the EOS 1Ds, pixel count has no fixed relationship to image quality except
in the most broad sense.

Chip, I'm pretty familiar with Canon's EOS 1D and 10D, Nikon's P&S Coolpix
990, and have some familiarity with Canon's G3. I'm particularly
appreciative of Canon's very large, 10 micron pixel size for the 1D, and
what it thus does for image quality - i.e., I'm also one who contends too
that it's pixel size more so that pixel quantity that makes a difference.
(And the 1Ds and D30 are the next level in imager pixel size (smaller), the
next level after that being the D60 and 10D, and then the P&Ss.)

I'm particularly respectful of your substantial effort on this news list -
you're one of the key contributors to this list. I think on this point,
though, I'll just have to note a rare and respectful disagreement. Based on
my usage of the 4 cameras noted in the above paragraph, I'm of the opinion
that image quality from a G3 is not comparable to a 10D.

Parenthetically, I think you get what you're generally paying for. A 10D is
about $1000 more expensive than a G3 (less if you're not having to purchase
a lens to become a 10D user); a 1D is about another $1500 more expensive
than a 10D. (And a 1Ds is about another $4500 more expensive than a 1D.)

Best regards,

Bill
