Hi Jim,

I was suggesting the LAB technique as a general solution to the dark side of
simply using USM on an image. Using USM on a flat RGB image produces color
halos that limit how far you can go with sharpening and generally messes up
your image if used alone in quantity. It adds "ringing" (electronics term,
I can't think of a better term to describe the effect), to the video signal
like most people have on their TV sets who crank up the sharpness setting
control.

Good link, it explains a lot about what the PS unsharp controls do! There
are several ways to sharpen and image, LAB is one way fading the USM'd layer
is another, there's also high-pass sharpening and two or three others which
can sharpen edges and also use just a color layer for portraits keeping a
smooth skin texture. I also use other filters in PS to sharpen images
depending on what it is and what I need for the image.

Don't worry about it being a Nikon related site, the info is good and stands
on its own! The liberations of data is a basic premise of the internet, of
course it's not all correct politically and otherwise. lol!

Cheers/Chip
