"However, if all of the D coupe issues were not completed, i.e. the steel sheet on the header tank, etc, can I challenge the fact it was never properly converted and in fact is still a C coupe?" Gentlemen. I might point out that the 415 C/D is identical to a 415/D except for the elevator travel. All "enhancements" that the higher gross weight model received were implemented in the C/D model as well, yet it runs under the 718 Type Certification. I believe that the guys at ERCO had in mind that you could choose with the C/D model under what Certificate (means gross weight) you will operate the plane, hence the C/D. It is a tragedy to see that all the model differences are mainly determined in how the elevator is being rigged, but no one seems to realize that. Practically ANY 415 Ercoupe with a C-75 or C-85 engine could fly under 718 Type certificate. Then I understand that the Sport Pilot rule excludes planes that were even OPERATED at higher gross weights. This means that practically NO Ercoupe is eligible for the Sport Pilot rule. What should have been done by Univair is to ask for a TC amendment that allows for a gross weight restriction to 1320 pounds of all non C Ercoupes. That would solve all our problems and make flying Ercoupes more practical and safer. To the best of my knowledge there is no way to have the 85hp with out being a C or higher. I am dealing with a similar issue with my plane and it is not as easily solved as you might think. A lot depends upon the FSDO office and there interpretation of your paperwork. The FAA Cd shows this conversion. What would be the process for doing so? Has the stainless steel sheet ben installed over the header tank area? My 415-C has everything like a D except for the stainless steel over the tank, so it's still only a C. I have a sneaking suspicion that someone may have done all the changes to my plane then inadvertently flown it at a 1400lb GW not knowing that the conversion had not been completed. They probably even told their friends that they had a D. Who knows?
