Hi Wren > Hmm. I'm planning to take the > Pismo apart and re-install the processor --- this time adding the > arctic silver paste. While I'm in there - is there anything I can do > for the fan to check it, or fix it? Should I try to buy a replacement > for the fan? I'd suggest you make sure the fan spins freely. Maybe you can apply the correct voltage to the leads from a battery to test it while the Pismo is dissembled. A quick websearch suggests the fan takes 5 volts (http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-964012.html) but don't relay on this - maybe other Pismo owners can chime in. Or maybe the voltage and current requirements are written on the fan.
BTW, is the heatpipe/heatsink assembly OK? Maybe heat is piling up inside Pismo because it's not being transferred to appropriate exits. Replacements - here's a possibility: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Internal-Fan-Replacement-Lombard---Pismo--p-16259.html Or try LEMswap, eBay, Craigslist for the guts of a non-functional Pismo if your fan is proven not to work. > About the PATA SSD - could you tell me the size I need for the Pismo? > I'll see if I can get one. If you have a recommended place to buy > affordably, please let me know. I'm in Edinburgh, Scotland while I seem to recall you're in the USA, so our sources may well be different. I got my SSD from the UK version of eBay. The brand was Kingspec. If you get an SSD, make sure it's PATA (parallel ATA), **NOT** SATA (serial ATA) - SATA devices won't even fit into your Pismo. As for size, 64GB was about UK£80 - this was more than enough for my needs. (Of the 64GB, 13GB is used by OSX and by photo website and under 1GB is used by OS9·2·2.) I'd suggest looking at how much disk space you need in your Pismo, then allowing a few GB 'breathing space'. I'd suggest you don't go above 128Gb because Pismo can't see portions of disks/SSDs above 128GB without using the Hi-cap drivers. (See http://www.intechusa.com/ATA6.html for further info on these.) > These tin boxes act as small stilts holding up the Pismo - but > allowing air to get underneath it all quite well. When blowing a fan > at this, the air easily gets underneath. Love the home-made solution > I think if I could find a cheap and tiny USB fan that I could aim underneath > this, I'd be better > off than with my larger fan. Definitely - aim the coolness where it's needed. > Last night, even my flash drive felt hot when I pulled it out. Only > used the pismo for 30 minutes and it was terribly hot. Surgery coming > today or tomorrow if I can work it in to the holiday schedule. That sounds bad - IIRC another lister has suggested stopping using the Pismo until it's sorted. I second that!
