This is why I avoid e-bay pretty much. While most of the folks there
seem to be honest, the system is wide open to scamming, the feedback
system included. I would never commit more money to an e-bay item
than I'd be willing to take out of my pocket and burn.
My mind boggles when I read of people getting scammed on things for
$10,000 and $50,000 on e-bay.
What were they THINKING?
*The guy in California who was recently convicted of using malware
controlled botnets to do DDOS attacks, ad hit scamming and such was
in the news last week. One scam was using these botnets to leave
positive feedback on e-bay.
I no more believe feedback on e-bay than I believe what's written in
the Weekly World News. I won't *even* get into how much money
laundering is likely done on e-bay.
I wouldn't be surprised if a significant fraction of e-bay's revenue
comes from money laundering schemes.
(Have a large pile of illicit cash to launder? Put up some worthless
items for bid, then have accomplices 'buy' them at high prices with
money orders, paid for in cash, natch.
10-15 people could launder thousands of dollars a week that way.
Nothing need ever be shipped of course, and so long as you pay e-bay
and the MO company their vig, everyones's happy.
Keep every transaction at < $9K and no one ever tells Treasury. You
have to maintain a bunch of e-bay ID's to avid triggering e-bay's
watchdog routines (if I can think of this, they have!).
Hell, pay the IRS *their* vig on the "profits" you make on e-bay, and
you almost have a legal scam, they won't get you like they did Al, at
least.
Probably ALMOST as profitable a laundering scheme as making movies in
Hollywood.)
