You can also use 3d audio to let you know if things are above or below you, though you'll have to find something better the Directx for that. There is a program called AM3D that is wonderful, being the same one used in the Blind Eye--but you don't really get a feel for how awesome it is by playing that. What you'd really have to do is play with the Diesel engine--and when you've got the helicopter directly under your chin, and you feel the need to itch your throat, you know you've found a good 3d audio engine.
