You wrote that goblins can only attack from open land, but realistically they should be allowed to attack from any type except water. You could pick a random point, and if it is forest, slow the goblin movement speed to half or a quarter. And if you wanted to clear a plot for housing it would be more realistic to allow the lumberjacks to do it, but in a slower rate than if it was dense forest. An interesting option would be to add moat diggers, that would create a water barrier to prevent goblins attacking. If you created a mote almost completely around your settlement, the goblins would have to find the opening. If you put a mote completely around your settlement, you would be able to create a castle.
Of course you would have to build a draw bridge to get in and out.
