Re Cats, coyotes etc
I have doubled screened all my cages and the outer layer is heavy duty
hardware cloth. I am sure a determined coyote, racoon, opossom etc could
still break in. I have never left my animals other than the box turtles out
over night as reptiles are illegal in my town and I keep them inside other
than day trips. I also have a problem with one new neighbour who insists on
spraying poison on his grass and shrubs so I had to take down the safely
hidden cage that was by the fence.
My cat constantly monitors all my lizards and after about 2 days even my
old chameleons totally ignored her. My ciliatus and leo's ignore her to the
point where they will eat, drink and copulate inches from her nosy little
face. My V. acaranthus actually seems to get a kick out of the cat and if
she has finished stuffing her face and is bored will then come up to where
she is close to the cat and check her out from all angles then either falls
asleep or looks for more food. None of our reptiles perceive her as a
danger. My leo's are 10 and 11 years old and will come and look but then
continue with eating or whatever inches from her nose.
With quail you might try having the outer screen separating the inner by
2x4's and using the really heavy 1" or 2". And plant something viny that is
edible for the quail between the screens or use fiberglass panels along the
bottom for shade, wind and a visual barrier.
