Complicate! Always complicate!!! Allow me to complicate the issue of 'Cultural Leaders ' more.
K. K. Koch and Salimkumar were there in the group which supported Munnar action [ From reports I came to theis knowledge. Not quite sure about it] are they included in this apolitical list of Samskarika Nayakar? I personally would argue that we should ask their opinion on it before supporting/ opposing. I was wondering why nobody include A. Vasu's name while enumerating samskarika Nayakar.. If we reserve the category of 'activist' for them, what about Ajitha? Who is an ideal and 'pure' cultural leader? While following the trajectory of post naxalite political life of the leaders, i find Vasu , Salimkumar and Ajitha significant. while K.Venu and others shifted from one idealogical positin to the other without being reflexive of the politics of one's own self, these three and Koch politicised their selves and found significant breaks. Quite often the continuities, not discontinuities are emphasisied by the popular media. A. Vasu told me about the break he could find by reading Ambedkar's works. He indeed is an organic intellectual who effortlessly coalesce Mao with ambedkar and organise fierce resistences on single issues at this age. Let me narrate an experience which foreground the inner dynamics and poer relations of this very 'Cultural ' field. Last October, K. Venu announced indefinite fast demanding the release of all eligible prisoners who completed lifeterm. At the last moment he backtracked, claiming that he has got assurance from certain Cabinet minsters that they will take steps as part of 'Keralappiravi". He said, he will start fast after Nov.1 if nothing happens. As nothing was assured concretely the committee decided to go ahead with the announced struggle. K. K. Koch and T.K.Vasu [ Trisuur] volunteered to start the fast. Venu announced his decision in the convention. Koch and T. K. vasu were on the stage, M.Gangadharan referred to their fast as an attempt to foil the 'glamour' of Venu's fast in future! He proceeded to say that SamaraSamithi was relying on these 'small figures' as 'Vellam korikal and Virakuvettikal'!!! [I protested from the audience and asked him to shut up. My response has conveniently been analysed as undemocratic] I totally agree with devika on what she says about the [a] political content of such subject positions. But while thinking about it in conjunction with issue based movements, I still feel that we can't afford to boycott them . What matters is not their integrity but the effect their routine responses will have on the authority and public.
