Brian, I never saw an email from Peter after 9:28PM yesterday. I got one
from Chris, to which I responded. Now, I've gotten a flood of emails from
Evan and Peter, and this most recent one from you. Apparently Evan and
Peter are discussing some of the issues I raised. Briefly, here's the back
story. I installed Adium so I could use Stanford's IM system. Part of that
install asked me to install Growl, supposedly because Adium uses it to
notify users of Instant Messages from other users. OK, I did that. Next
thing I know, strange files are showing up in my Trash. Every start or
restart of my computer leaves Recovered Files in the Trash. Where were they
coming from, I asked myself. The only clue was the file names ended in
"growlRegDict", so I assumed that came from Growl. I looked at my System
Preferences -> Accounts and there were no Login Items dealing with Growl. I
looked a Growl itself, and I did NOT have "Start Growl at login" checked,
and did NOT have "Show Growl icon on menu bar" checked. I checked that one,
and the Growl icon appeared on my menu bar. There was no "GrowlMenu"
application or control panel, so when Peter started talking about that, I
had no idea what he was talking about. Over the next few days I used Adium
a few times, but continued to see Recovered Files in my Trash day-after-day,
which I deleted by Empty Trash. But they came back every day, with
different date-time stamps. So I posted my FIRST post to the Growl
Discussion Group. I still don't see GrowlMenu, unless that means the Growl
icon on the menu bar, which only appears if I open System Preferences ->
Growl. Until I open Growl, there is NO icon on the menu bar. There are NO
Login Items under Accounts having to do with Growl. Yet I keep being told
there should be such items. What would have installed them? And why
weren't they installed when I said "YES" to Adium's request to add Growl?
That's the basis of my assertion that Growl wasn't properly installed.
These are some of the things I don't understand. I hope this explanation
help YOU.
