Not exactly true. You had already installed Adium; the prompt comes up
when you run Adium for the first time.

That's what we want to know. My question stands: What application's
name is in the filenames of these files?

My apologies. I shouldn't be throwing around under-the-hood names of
Growl features like that.

Yes, it does mean that.

So, what happens when you uncheck and recheck the “Show Growl icon in
the menu bar” checkbox?

Yes. If “Start Growl on login” is checked, then GrowlHelperApp should
be in your log-in items. Also, once the Growl icon in the menu bar has
appeared at least once, GrowlMenu should be in your log-in items.

They are already installed, being inside the Growl preference pane. If
GrowlHelperApp were not installed, Growl would not work at all: You
would not see Growl notifications. Likewise, if GrowlMenu were not
installed, you would not be able to have the Growl icon in your menu
bar.

The log-in items list is just that: A list. Log-in items are simply
entries in the list, like names in a guestbook. There is no separately-
installable file that defines a log-in item; GrowlHelperApp is the
application that receives and displays notifications, and if you have
Growl set to start on log-in, then GrowlHelperApp itself should have
an entry in the list.

If you have Growl in System Preferences, and Growl shows notifications
and the Growl icon can appear in your menu-bar, then Growl is properly
installed.
