I am guessing that my dad's imac dv 400 hard drive went and was going to

not mention mac. Is it just a matter of formatting once installed? or do I
need to get one that states mac compatible?

No the DV 400 has a standard ATA (IDE) interface. Any IDE hard drive will work. You're correct all you need to do is format it for the Mac OS. Your iMac is only an ATA 66 bus, but you can use a "faster" bus drive and it will work fine. The various IDE specs, 133, 100, 66 are backwards compatible. The OEM drives were only 5400 RPM, however, a lot of people have installed 7200 RPM drives in the Summer 2000, 2001 imacs with no problems.
