If you're interested in exploring Ruby (especially coming from a Java perspective), then check out eRubyCon in Columbus, OH (August 7-9, 2009). Schedule: http://erubycon.com/schedule.
Joe O'Brien is doing his talk "Be careful, Your Java is Showing" and Charles Nutter is talking about "Enterprise JRuby". Joe's company organizes eRubyCon and he's a great community leader. Definitely attend if you have any interest at all. Also, the JRuby team attended PyCon 2008 and spent a significant amount of time with the Jython team. Likewise, the IronRuby and IronPython guys did a talk together at Microsoft that I attended. Further, I haven't ever heard any complaints about Ruby from any of the Posse. My recollection from the episode (270) was the complaint was merely about Active Record.
