Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to the start of another week of Levy
Letters. I hope your weekend was good and I hope you’re ready for the start of
another week of Look North. Thanks for reading the Levy Letter and spread the
word if you can. If there’s someone you know, who’s not signed up for the Levy
Letter and they would like one, then push them in the direction of the two
addresses at the bottom of the page. Get them to sign up! If they do it this
evening, then they’ll get their first Levy Letter tomorrow.

Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm for all the day’s news and during this
incredibly cold snap, Paul will have the forecast for us. Well, I have to admit
he was right about the snow this weekend, so let’s see what else there is in
store for us with the weather for the rest of the week.

Also tonight, I’ll be investigating Hull’s bid to become the next World Trade
Centre. It’s all part of Hull’s investment in regeneration in this part of the
area. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think they’ll be successful?
Well, as always I greatly appreciate your comments and thoughts, so send them
in to me during the day at the usual address. And also tonight, ahead of the
start of the Commonwealth Games, we’ll have our region’s swimming hopefuls on
the programme. They’re heading out to Australia shortly, but we’ll be meeting
them in training for the Games. I hope you can join me then.

Pictures

Don’t forget I want to see your pictures. Any sort – funny ones, serious ones,
pictures for the Big Screen, weather views, then feel free to email me or post
them to me. The postal address by the way is BBC Look North, Queens Court,
Queens Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Or if you want to email me, then it’s [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Food Abroad

What do you miss when you go and live abroad or even when you go on holiday
abroad? What are the things you miss the most food wise? Well, baked beans and
smoky bacon crisps are the foods that homesick Britons miss the most when they
move over there. The classic British snacks topped a list of traditional foods
that ex-pats yearn for when they go over to Spain or to wherever. While
previous generations had to make do with food parcels sent by family or
friends, the Internet means that Britons can now order sentimental snacks
online. Baked beans were the snack most pined for. Smoky bacon crisps came a
close second and in third place were flake bars and also a well-known tea bag!
And marmite was not far behind! So also in there was brown sauce, and gravy
granules as well, followed by an orange sponge type biscuit – did you notice
what I did there to try and avoid advertising! Well, these came up in a survey
of the foods that we miss the most, including malt loaf as well, but n!
ow thanks to online shopping, that’s all in the past. It’s a big hit and ex
pats can order their food and have it sent to their holiday homes wherever they
may be! So those are some of the food items we miss the most!

Moving House

Well, more and more stories are coming out about the house price situation at
the moment. It’s really interesting. I see as well that the average person
looks at eight houses before buying one. That’s quite interesting isn’t it? And
also, figures out this week show that the North of England is losing people.
Basically, they talk about the numbers of people moving away from some of our
towns and cities in the North of England, whilst the population in the UK
generally goes up, particularly in the South of England. The figures show
dwindling populations in the Midlands and the North over the next twenty years.
That’s the same period that Britain’s own population is predicted to swell.
Well, the biggest drop, over the next twenty years, is when many areas could
see populations drop by 10%. Many places are mentioned, but the biggest drop in
all towns and in all cities is predicted for Kingston upon Hull. And those are
figures just out. Basically it means that in twenty years tim!
e there will be 10% less people living here. Well, it seems that people are
moving away all the time according to these figures, which are out today.

The Royal

It’s great to see that The Royal is back on TV last night. I’m a big fan of
that programme. Well, it’s a sixties medical drama and it’s just returned for a
new series. It’s excellent stuff and I really enjoy that one. Carrying on with
TV, I was talking to the youngest ever trainer at Crufts last week on the
programme – Chloe, who comes from Goole. I’m not sure how she did in the
competition, but we’ve just had three or four days of Crufts with the final of
Best In Show last night. If you are a dog owner and you’d like to comment on
Crufts or if anyone knows how Chloe did, then get in touch as I’d love to give
her a mention in the Levy Letter.

Aled Jones

My guest on the programme on Friday night was Aled Jones. He’s everywhere at
the moment of course. He’s just been on Strictly Come Dancing and is on tour at
the moment. If you went to see him in Hull, then let me know how the concert
went. Of course, he’s also on Radio 2 every Sunday morning and also on Songs of
Praise as well on BBC1 on Sunday. You can’t get away from Aled, but in this job
you get to meet and talk to quite a few well known people and some people, when
they’re off are the same as when they’re on, and some people aren’t at all.
Aled is one of the nicest people in show business. I’ve interviewed him over
the years many times and have probably known him for about twenty years I would
have thought. He’s one of the nicest people in show business and it’s so great
to be able to report that back as well to everyone. I think sometimes people
can be very quick to moan about celebrities, but he is a really nice guy. By
the way I’m not his agent!!

Well, that’s all from me for today. I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on
BBC1 at 6.30pm for today’s Look North. Don’t forget if you want to drop me a
line on any subject and if you’ve got a story that you think we could pursue on
Look North, then give me the details. Also, if you’ve got a problem for Leave
it to Levy, then get in touch. Send me a contact telephone number as well. Just
email me to the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Join me tonight for Look
North at half past six and look out for your Levy Letter tomorrow.

Bye for now

Peter
