Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm
for all the day’s news. Paul will have the forecast of course and tonight, I’ll
be getting the latest on the investigation after two Roe deer were found
slaughtered near Bridlington. The RSPCA and the police are trying to track down
the people responsible for this crime.

I’ll also have exclusive pictures of a Hull man, who is learning to walk again
after breaking his neck in a rugby match. It’s a wonderful story, I’ll be
telling you more about that tonight.

And my special guest tonight is the country’s greatest living dancer, Wayne
Sleep. I’ll be speaking to him as he prepares to tread the boards in our
region! I’ll also be announcing the winners of our Curtis Stigers competition,
so tune in to find out if you’ve won tickets to go see Curtis in concert. All
that on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Countdown

I mentioned yesterday about Carol Vorderman and her slightly bigger role these
days on Countdown. Rather than just bringing up the vowels and consonants,
she’s playing a bigger role in the programme. Well, that’s opened up a hornet’s
nest. There’s one here from Jean Fowles, “I’m of the opinion that Carol feels
that the show, Countdown, is hers and that Des Lynam is her protégé. I think
he’s coping very well, but would do so much better if Carol left him alone. I
also resent the fact that she introduces the guests in dictionary corner now. I
think, if the programme carries along in this vein, it will lose its
popularity. So come on Carol, give Des a chance. He’s coping really well.”

And another one here from Andy King, “There’s nothing wrong with Carol
Vorderman. She has to take a little more control as Des isn’t right for the
show. She’s trying to get the programme flowing as Des needs a shove. He needs
a bomb up his backside!” Andy King sent that one in, so thank you very much
indeed for your comments on Countdown. Keep them coming in.

Babies

I see that bottle-fed babies are more lightly to suffer from obesity later on
in life, so say researchers. Those, who drink formula milk, rather than breast
milk, and go on to solid food at an early age, could be at risk of weight
problems decades later, it’s claimed. Bottle feeding could lead to a pattern of
over-eating, which is difficult to overcome. A study published found that
babies drinking formula milk took in more calories and experienced weight gain
at a crucial stage in their growth. So there you are. So according to that
story, bottled fed babies are more likely to suffer from obesity.

Motorists

Well, a couple of bad stories for motorists this week. Motorway service
stations are dirty, rundown and overpriced according to consumer watchdogs.
Well, I don’t suppose anybody will be particularly surprised by that one! But
also, this is the barmy story of the week that motorists could soon be forced
to drive with their headlights on at all times, under new EU plans. Those, who
fail to switch on, could face fines of up to £60. EU officials want all member
states to follow those in Scandinavian countries, where daytime lights are
mandatory. What this basically would mean is that as you’re driving up the A63
on a nice sunny day in Hull, you would need your lights on. And if you don’t
have your lights on, then you could get a £60 fine! Sweden made daytime lights
mandatory in 1997, which is why their Swedish built Volvos always have their
lights on. Norway, which is not in the EU, followed suit in 1980. I didn’t
realise that. Anyway, what do you think about that one? Your view!
 s are gratefully received.

Drop Me A Line

Don’t forget if you’ve got a story or an issue that you think we should be
tackling on the programme and you’d like to tell me about it, then drop me a
line. Let me know and we might be able to cover it on the programme, perhaps as
a Leave it to Levy or as a story for one of our reporters to follow up. Or if
you’ve got any snippets of information that you think I might like to know
about, then drop me a line. You can get me directly on [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look
forward to hearing from you. And of course, if there’s anyone you know, who is
not getting a Levy Letter and would like one, then tell them to go to one of
the two addresses at the bottom of the page and click on there, click on Levy
Letter and follow the instructions through. Once they’ve signed up, they’ll
then get their first daily email from me the day after.

Shoes

Many jokes of course made about the number of shoes that women have. Well, the
average woman spends three months of her life and nearly £80,000 shopping for
shoes alone! Can you believe this? Showing a dedication that would impress
Imelda Marcos, who famously owned one thousand two hundred pairs! One in three
women devote more than £150,000 to feed their obsession, but when it comes to
actually using these treasured possessions, well that’s another matter. More
than half of the five thousand women questioned admit to owning at least five
pairs that they never wear. In other words, there are five pairs in their
wardrobe that never get worn! But £80,000 is the average that a woman spends in
a lifetime on shoes! Can you believe that? And, nearly three months of her life
is spent looking around and choosing shoes. Amazing, isn’t it?

Don’t forget if there’s a story that you want to comment on, then email me back
at the usual address.

Gaynor Faye

There are still more emails in asking if we could have Gaynor Faye on the
programme. As I said yesterday, it would be very difficult, because although
Gaynor is a Yorkshire girl, she is not from our part of Yorkshire, she is from
Leeds. But I know that she comments on many other subjects in addition to
acting. She is a very keen artist as well and she is also a spokesperson for
bullying. So once again, many congratulations to Gaynor for her achievement on
the show, Dancing On Ice. She was just stunning. And Gaynor, I think she is
about thirty-four and mother of two children. And her Mum is the playwright,
Kay Mellor. Well, I’ve got the message, you want Gaynor Faye on the programme
and we’ll do what we can. But obviously, it might be difficult. If there’s
anyone you’d particularly like to see on the programme, then let me know and
send me an email.

That’s it from me. Have a very good day and join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
