Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well so far and I hope your weekend was good too! I hope you’ll be able
to join me tonight for the start of another week here on Look North on BBC1 at
6.30pm. I’ll have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast. Also,
there’s news of a radio drama, which is being made here in Hull. It’s been
written by John Godber and one of the stars of the hit British film, The Full
Monty, will be starring in it. I’ll be talking to the actor, Mark Addy, tonight
on the programme.

We’ll also be returning to the streets of Grimsby to get the reaction from
local people, after Humberside Police made dozens of arrests of suspected drug
dealers in the area. Last week, we had exclusive access to dawn raids of houses
in Grimsby, which the police were calling Operation Galaxy. I’ll be finding out
tonight if the people of Grimsby are happy with the performance of their police
force.

Also tonight, I’ll be responding to many viewers’ complaints over the Hull
based internet service, Karoo. I’ve had a lot of complaints about them, but
would love to hear from you, if you’ve had problems with them too. Let me know,
get in touch with me this morning as I’d like to hear from you. Either email me
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or get in touch with our producer today on 01482 314501. I
hope to hear from you soon.

My special guest tonight, back by popular demand as he was really funny last
time he was on the programme, is Paddy McGuinness. He promised he would pop in
to see me before his sell out gig in Skegness tonight and he’ll be joining me
on the sofa. There are no more tickets left for his Skegness gig, but there are
still a few left for other gigs in the region, at Scarborough and Kings Lynn.
So go and get some tickets if you’re a fan of Paddy McGuinness!

Skating

After, I mentioned it first just over a week ago, I’ve had a large number of
emails about the skating on the television. Skating On Ice – what a huge
success it’s been. If you watched the final on Saturday night, you’ll know it
was won by the Yorkshire girl, who lives seventy miles away down the M62 at
Leeds, Gaynor Faye. Well, Gaynor’s mum is the playwright, Kay Mellor and
they’ve both been ambassadors for Yorkshire. So, well done to Gaynor. And I
know that many people just assumed that Bonnie Langford would win. The judges
gave Bonnie plenty of sixes when she did her flying routine on Saturday and
that sort of sealed it that she would win. Or did it? Maybe that angered people
at home. That seemed to be the general feeling that Bonnie has done flying
before when she’s been in productions like Peter Pan and she’s obviously been a
dancer before. I think maybe people at home got wise to that and decided that
she was not to be in the skate-off. Anyway, I don’t know. The result !
was a huge hit for ITV, with a huge number of people watching the skating. And
also of course, what a success for Gaynor, so well done to her.

Mail

Don’t forget you can drop me a line about anything you like at all. If you’ve
got an idea for the programme, a story that you think we should be doing, or if
you’ve got a problem that you think we could tackle on Leave it to Levy, then
send me the details. It’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We were talking about water metering last week. That’s prompted a flurry of
emails. “Hi Peter. Ian here from Bourne. In response to your letter and in
particular about your item on water. If you want to cut back on your water
usage regarding the toilet, then you simply need to add a certain device called
a water hippo into the tank. It sits on top of their individual toilets. It’s
marketed by the water companies. It composes of a small plastic bottle filled
with gravel or soil to make it sink.” So there you are. There’s one tip there.
Although can’t you just use a brick instead? I’m sure I’ve heard that from
somewhere.

And also, this one is from Ann Root and she says, “On the subject of water
meters, we changed to a metered system early last year and our standing order
payments were reduced from £48 a month down to £17. There is just my husband
and I in the house and you can see it was an enormous saving. When we realised
how big a cost saving a meter could make, I also arranged for my elderly
mother, who lives alone, to have a meter installed. And she has already paid
the first half year charges for last year and she has not paid anything at all
for water since then. She has been informed that she is still in credit!” So
there you are. Not everyone is going to be out of pocket with a water meter.

House Prices

Still on the subject of money and I see that house prices are expected to rise
up to 9% over the coming year as buyers flood back into the market place.
Estate agents claim that people are being lured by a combination of low
interest rates, attractive mortgage offers and an increasing number of
properties for sale. This renewed enthusiasm is expected to lead to bumper
hikes across the country. The director of one estate agents said that the
average prices were expected to rise by 6% by March 2007 and in some areas by
even more than that! So there you are. House prices still continue to dominate
the headlines.

Pictures

I know many people would have taken, including myself, photographs this weekend
with the clear blue skies, albeit cold and windy, but there’s been brilliant
sunshine, particularly on Sunday. What a gorgeous day. And if you were actually
out in the sunshine on Sunday, it was quite weird, because although you could
see snow and ice still around that hadn’t melted, when you were sat in the sun
it was actually warm enough to sit out without a coat on! It was an
extraordinarily lovely day yesterday. But if you took some pictures, like me,
and you think I should see them for our Big Screen, then do send them to me.
Either send me a hard copy in the post, or send them to me electronically at
the usual address and look out for your picture if they’re good enough for the
Big Screen on Look North between 6.30pm and 7.00pm!

Competition

A special competition now, which is exclusive for the Levy Letter to win one of
two pairs of tickets to see the jazz legend and star of BBC1’s Just The Two Of
Us, Curtis Stigers. I interviewed him on Friday of last week and what a great
guy he is. I’m sure you’ll really enjoy his concert at the Embassy Theatre in
Skegness. If you want to go, then all you’ve got to do is answer this question.
Name one of the presenters from the BBC1 show, Just The Two Of Us, which Curtis
is starring in at the moment. If you think you know, then email me at [EMAIL
PROTECTED] And you could be going to see Curtis in concert at Skegness.

Well, that’s it from me for today. I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on
BBC1 at 6.30pm. Have a very good afternoon and look out for your Levy Letter
tomorrow round about the same time. If you’re entering the competition, then
good luck and get your entries in as soon as possible to the usual email
address.

Take care

Peter
