Hello, its Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Paul
will have the forecast and also tonight we’ve got a very busy show. Amongst the
rest of the day’s news, we’ll be listening to the milkmen and women’s plea to
help save doorstep deliveries in our region. Once, little bottles of milk left
on the doorstep in the early hours of the morning was the norm in all our
homes, but supermarkets are forcing sales of milk from the milkmen down.
They’re battling to save their livelihood.

I’ll also be talking to Richard Nauyokas. He’s the star of ITV’s Bad Lads Army
and Trisha Goddard’s Bootcamp on Channel 5. He whips lazy teenagers into shape
and he wants to bring his boot camps to Lincolnshire.

Ahead of the Archbishop of York’s visit to Hull today, I’ll be talking to the
enigmatic first black Archbishop, the Right Reverand John Sentamu. He’s a
wonderfully vivacious character, so I’m looking forward to talking to him later
on the programme tonight.

There’s also been some success for two young chefs in our region. The result of
the highly prized Roux Scholarship will be announced tonight and I’ll be
talking to one of the judges, Gary Rhodes, on what skills he’s looking for in
the kitchen of these two young talented chefs.

Weatherman

And if you saw last night’s programme, you will have seen John Kettley on the
sofa. John has just moved from Hertfordshire, at least I think that was where
he lived when he was down south and has now come back to live in Lincolnshire.
I say that he’s come back, because his wife used to live in Lincolnshire and
he’s come to make his home here now. He was on the programme last night and
he’s a really great man and we wish him and his family well. I’ve had several
emails from people saying what a great story it is that John is coming to live
in Lincolnshire. So let’s wish John and his family well and hope that they’re
happy up here with us.

Pictures

Don’t forget that I’m on the lookout for any pictures, photographs, anything
you think we might be able to use on the programme. Last night’s photo on the
show was quite a funny one. It was a view of the Humber Bridge with a lot of
wheelie bins in front of it. It was a little bit post modern and a little bit
different! So, if you spot anything when you’re out that you think we might
like to see on the programme, then let me know. It could be something funny for
the Peter and Paul spot, or a nice view. Of course, if you’ve got a problem
that you think I could tackle on Leave it to Levy, then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]
to contact me directly.

Clothes

Well, if you thought that women were buying more clothes these days, then you
would be right. Women are buying twice as many clothes compared to ten years
ago, because of plummeting prices. I have to say that I can understand this
totally. As a man, you can go out and buy a proper shirt for £4! And of course,
in the old days, it cost an awful lot more than that! In today’s disposable
society, cheap handbags and fast fashion garments are thrown away after just a
few outings. Government figures show that the price of women’s clothing has
fallen by 34% since 1995. That’s incredible isn’t it? In 1995, a cashmere
sweater for a woman would cost £80. Today you can get a cashmere for £25! And a
pair of jeans in 1995 would be £30, now a pair of jeans for £8. The list goes
on. As a fellow, as I said, you certainly notice it. The price crash covers
many other retail areas too. For example, over the same period, the price of a
vacuum cleaner has gone down by a staggering 45% and home an!
d audio/visual items, such as TVs are down 73%! That is incredible, isn’t it?
Personal computers are now an everyday appliance in the home and are 93%
cheaper than they were ten years ago. In other words, there has never been a
better time to buy your computers, HIFIs, clothes, anything, because we’ve
never had it so cheap! That’s according to figures just released.

Fast Food

As you know, fast food is not something which must past my lips anymore and
hasn’t done since New Year’s Eve, because of my new Gillian McKeith diet. And
maybe I’m not the only one, because one well known burger chain has seen a
slump in burger sales forcing twenty five restaurants to close. Hungry Britons
are not loving it quite so much and instead are turning to healthy options.
Fifty-one years of burgers are coming to a slowdown as the chain announces that
twenty-five of its branches are going to close, which perhaps is a sign of the
times on the healthy eating front.

More Fashion

I was talking about the prices of clothes nowadays. The ladies, of course, for
quite a few years now, have been wearing G strings. They were the fashion
accessory of the moment. Well, G string sales are down 28% in the past two
years. Women, it seems, are not wearing them so much any more. But boy shorts
are now a big hit with the girls. Sales have doubled in just eighteen months!

Tuesday Night

As you know, we had a bit of an open evening at the BBC on Tuesday evening.
Many people came along and we had several emails from people, who were there
that night to say that they enjoyed themselves. We discussed the BBC, the
programmes of Radio Humberside and also of Look North and also other BBC
services, which come out of our part of the world. We had several emails from
people saying it was a very enjoyable evening. Thank you very much indeed to
everyone, who came along. Also, I know that quite a few people were
disappointed, because there weren’t enough tickets for everybody. So, if you
tried to get along, then thank you for your interest. And I’m sure there’ll be
another event when we can get together in the not too distant future. By the
way, if you are in Hull and in the Princes Quay area, then I’ll be in the
shopping centre on Friday morning at 10am. If you can make it along, then I
look forward to seeing you there.

Music

Several people at our event the other night were saying how much they enjoyed
to hear music by local artists on the programme and it’s an area that we’re
keen to expand. If you know someone, who’s a good musician, who plays the
guitar or sings, or plays an instrument and has got a real talent and you think
they deserve a wider audience, then drop me a line. Let me know all about them,
give me the details and of course send me a contact telephone number. Also,
send me details about anything else that would be interesting for the
programme. I’m also keen to have your ideas and suggestions for guests that
you’d like to have on the programme too. They don’t have to be famous people,
but maybe people that we haven’t thought about and maybe even people we haven’t
heard about, then get in touch with me at the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that’s all from me for today. Have a good Thursday afternoon and join me
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
