Hello It’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s levy letter. I hope your day is
going well. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC one at 6.30 for tonight’s
Look North. On the programme tonight we’ll have an exclusive report on the
pioneering research that is looking at the effect free school meals have on
children’s grades. We’ll also be talking to dancer Wayne Sleep about the
massive dance event taking place in Hull and Lincoln over the weekend. It is
part of an attempt to break the world record for the number of people dancing
at the same time. If you want some more details visit
www.bbc.co.uk/bigdanceclass. We’ll also bring you more details about an
archaeological discovery found near Lincoln. Plus find out why one local beach
has become a popular spot for ferrets!

Also Paul will be here with the detailed weather forecast for the weekend. It’s
going to be a very busy weekend as well, there’s the biggest dance class being
held at the weekend. If you’re going to the Gemtec arena in Hull then I’ll look
forward to seeing you there on Saturday lunchtime. And also on Sunday, as I
mentioned earlier in the week in the levy letter, it is the switching on of
Mablethorpe’s summer illuminations. It will be Sunday evening on the seafront
at Mablethorpe. Paul and I will be there to switch on the lights this year and
if you can make it down I will look forward to seeing you there.

Levy Letter
Just a reminder if you know of someone, friend or family, who is not signed up
to the levy letter and you think they would like one then just remind them go
to the link at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions through and
they will get the first levy letter on Monday. And if over the weekend if you
take any particularly good pictures of anything you’ve gone to or any of the
events you’ve been to, there are loads of them this weekend, if you want to
send your picture in it could be shown on the programme next week. The address
to send them to is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Breakfast Cereals
I’m sure like me you think that eating some of the healthier breakfast cereals
as advertised are good for us. And I certainly have some of a well known brand
with bran in it in the mornings with milk thinking it’s the right thing to do.
Well a survey just out shows that there are shocking levels of sugar, fat and
salt added to breakfast cereals. Two leading brands were 55% sugar, some were
saltier than a packet of crisps and some fattier than pork sausages, can you
believe that! Even cereals that claim to be healthy are laced with sugar, fat
and salt according to the study done by the consumer magazine ‘Which’. So if
you are a cereal eater be warned some of them have huge amount of sugar and fat
and are maybe not quite as healthy as you think they are.

Water
Now I am one of the people who have converted to a water meter over the recent
years and I suppose when you live alone you are better off. But there is a
survey out which shows the prices of things using the average cost of water.
When you have a bath how much do you think it costs you? Well on average 15.2p
if you have a meter and to flush the loo 1.5p, a normal shower 6.7p but if you
have a power shower 15.2p the same cost as a bath. To use a washing machine
costs 12.4p and the dishwasher is just 4.8p so good value for dishwasher if you
have one. To water the garden with a hose using 540 litres of water costs
102.6p. So there we are, some of the average costs of using water if you’ve got
a meter.

Entertainment
I mentioned this a couple of weeks back, but there’s a programme I think you’ll
enjoy starting this weekend. It’s the history of entertainment really and it’s
on BBC2 on Sunday night. It’s called ‘The Story of Light Entertainment’ and is
the first of eight programmes. The first one looks at double acts, everybody
from Laurel and Hardy in the beginning right up to the modern day with Ant and
Dec and everything in between. We were talking about Cannon and Ball a few
weeks ago and they are just about to play in Bridlington again and I’m sure
they’ll be featured in the series as well. It’s The Story of Light
Entertainment narrated by Steven Fry; it looks like it will be a good programme
and is on BBC 2 on Sunday night.

Labels
I’d like to throw this one at you. Have you seen any labels on things that are
pretty daft or meaningless? Because at the moment with all the political
correctness things have to be just right. The thing that makes me laugh is when
you get a coffee from a well known takeaway it warns you it might be hot.
There are also the signs which I know are important if you have allergies that
‘this may contain nuts’. There was a wonderful sticker that was on the newsroom
door for a long time which said ‘warning this may contain nuts’ and invariably
it did. But the latest one that I’ve found is the advice label on a travel
hairdryer and it said ‘do not use while sleeping’! If you’ve got any to add to
that then send them to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Class
Now what class are you, working middle or upper? I don’t really understand
these things but they do break them down into segments. I assume most people
think they know what class they are in. Well the stress of being working class
reduces a person’s lifespan by up to nine years according to experts. Being
lower down the social pecking order causes the body to age much faster. Doctors
believe the findings help to explain why working class people die younger than
those in middle or upper classes. Well I suppose that that is not really
rocket science, if you’ve got more money you have to do less work and you
haven’t got to graft as hard. It is often the working class who have their
sleeves rolled up to get stuck in. Anyway if you are working class, not great
news. Again you might think that’s a load of rubbish, your thoughts on that
one, as ever drop me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well that’s all from me today, have a very good weekend, might see you in
Mablethorpe. Look out for me if you are there. See you tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm for Look North as usual. Bye for now, Peter
