Hello, Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you can join me tonight BBC One at 6.30pm for all the
day’s news. We’ll have news that six police officers have resigned after
verbally insulting a woman on a train. With two weeks to go until the end of
the school term for some schools, we’ll be investigating how education leaders
are already stripping furniture from schools due for demolition and I’ll be
chatting to a young man from Grimsby who’s turned his life around thanks to
1950s’ style army training. And we’ll have the forecast from Lisa Gallagher as
usual as His Lordship is still away on his little break at home tending to his
garden and he’ll be back on Monday. Don’t forget this Friday night ahead of the
big birthday celebrations for the Humber Bridge we’ll be broadcasting live from
the Hessle Foreshore. If you can make it down to see the programme live and
join me for a chat then get down to the Hessle Foreshore from 6!
 .15pm on Friday evening.

Pirates

The second Pirates of the Caribbean movie has broken box office records to
become the most profitable opening day in the history of films ever. Not just
here, but in the United States which is some record. The film, which stars
Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp, took $30 million in the United States alone on
Friday. $30 million on one day in the States. Pirates of the Caribbean is just
out, I must admit I haven’t seen it – it’s not my kind of film really but you
might like to let me know what you think.

Sat Nat

Well of all the things which are being stolen at the moment sat nav is the
must-have for thieves in this country. The most popular gadget for modern
motorists to buy is the sat nav; it’s also at the centre of an escalating crime
wave. Can you believe this? Thefts of the satellite navigation systems which
direct drivers to their destinations (or not as the case may be!) have risen in
the last year by 2000%. A police chief said that leaving a sat nav in your car
is like leaving £300 on your dashboard. I was talking the other day to a taxi
driver who was driving me through Hull and he said every night before he goes
to bed he takes the sat nav off and takes it into the house. Not only that, but
the little suction sticker that is left on the windscreen, he even wipes that
off because that’s a giveaway that he’s got sat nav and the chances are it’s
going to be in the glove compartment so if you have sat nav, pack it away. The
worse hit area by the way is Sheffield which has seen!
a 20-fold increase in thefts. So there you are, some words of wisdom for sat
nav owners.

Charlotte Church

I must admit a few years ago I wasn’t bothered by Charlotte Church but just
recently I’ve been fascinated to read she’s only 20 and she’s worth £6.5
million. What a grounded and level-headed girl. She’s got her feet well and
truly on the ground. She talks and acts like somebody a lot older than her
years. She sends herself up and she knows she’s a little bit chubby and is
quite happy about that and she’s going out with this chap Gavin, I think he’s
called, some good looking young thing and she seems desperately happy with him.
They call them apparently Slosh and Pecs, reference to the fact that she enjoys
a drink and his physique. But she says she’s fed up with the celebrity
lifestyle and now she wants to settle down with Gavin Henson and just live an
ordinary life. No-one will believe this but she says “since I’ve turned 20 I’ve
really started to settle down. It’s a lot to do with him; I’ve never felt so
settled with anyone in my life.” She’d rather be out with her mates fo!
r a drink or down the chip shop than going off to celebrity parties. A really
down to earth girl. The other thing I like about her is the fact that she’s
always championed Cardiff and sung her home roots. So good girl, that’s
Charlotte Church.

Binge Drinking

Teenage girls from middle class homes are more likely to binge drink more often
than those from poorer communities according to new research. Experts say that
children with both parents out at work have more money and more time without
parental supervision to experiment with alcohol. Although boys start drinking
at an earlier age, girls consume alcohol more frequently. By the time they’re
14 their consumption out strips that of the opposite sex. So there we are, new
figures out, kids from middle class families tend to start drinking alcohol
younger and more of it.

Levy Letter

Don’t forget, if there’s someone you know that’s not signed up for a Levy
Letter and you think they’d like one, then all you’ve got to do is spread the
word. Point them in the direction of the address at the bottom of the page and
ask them to sign up, click on Levy Letter, follow the instructions and they’ll
get their first daily free Levy Letter from tomorrow. And don’t forget, if
you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we might be able to tackle on
the programme in Leave it to Levy then drop me a line. Give me the details and
also a contact telephone number as well. You can get me any time you like
directly on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Coffee

Well for many a strong cup of coffee is the only way to start the day. I must
admit if I’ve gone through the morning without drinking a cup of coffee I start
to get a headache, a sure-fire sign that I haven’t had my caffeine but the
caffeine in a brew may do more than make the tired and overworked feel more
alert it can also prevent memory loss in old age according to scientists. The
University of Birmingham said that some people can’t get started without a cup
of coffee, others need a shot of Red Bull to keep going. Caffeine is by far the
most widely used psychoactive drug there is. Research has shown it increases
alertness, it speeds up information processing. Caffeine also alters the
brain’s electrical activity by boosting gamma rhythms which are associated with
memory and learning. So there we are, I only put that in so that if you drink
too much coffee if may allay some of your fears.

Well, that's it from me for today, thank you very much for reading the Letter
and enjoy your afternoon. Join me tonight BBC One at 6.30pm.

Bye for now.

Peter
