Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. All the
day’s news. We’ll be covering the launch of a new race-hate hotline for victims
of racial abuse. Stephen Lawrence’s mum Doreen will be at the launch. You’ll
remember Stephen was the victim of a racial attack in 1993. A Rolls Royce is
being auctioned off today. It used to belong to a man from the Lincoln area who
didn’t pay his council tax. We’ll be looking at a pioneering scheme which takes
care of the pets of domestic violence victims and how are you coping in the
heat? Talking of which, Paul will have the forecast as usual.

Holidays

So the holidays start for the kids of course at the end of the week. Wherever
you’re going or if you’re staying at home I hope you have a great holiday. One
in seven people plans to use credit to pay for their summer holiday while
nearly 25%, a quarter admit they have no idea how much they spend while they’re
away according to a new survey out. 46% of people plan to take a holiday this
summer but 14% say they will put it on a credit card. So there we are, I don’t
suppose there are any great surprises there. Talking of money, just a quick
one, and the latest home-owners figures, house prices have come out. Some
people seeing their house go up by as much as £3,000 a week. I don’t believe
these figures but they are just staggering. It says home-owners have seen their
house value jump by as much as £12,000 in the past four weeks alone. The
biggest rise for five years. The average increase across the country in that
time was £6,000. In some areas of the south east the increase !
was twice that. So the average price a house has gone up is £3,000 in a week
in some places. That is just extraordinary isn’t it? Anyway, contrary to what
we read a few weeks back, house prices continue to rise.

Church

Just a quick note, don’t forget if you want to drop me a line for any kind of
mention in the Levy Letter, then please do. It’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] A note here
from church warden Ian Bland, he says, “Peter, St Andrews Church, a Grade I
listed building which has featured in all the guide books and on the
television, needs £90,000 for roof restoration. We’ve been promised £30,000
from English Heritage with the proviso that we raise the balance or promise of
the balance by the end of November. We’ve launched a Sponsor a Tile Appeal. So
there we are, good luck to everybody who’s involved with St Andrews Church in
Heckington and their Sponsor a Tile Appeal.

Autobiography

I was saying a few weeks back that Charlotte Church has written an
autobiography at the age of 20. Wayne Rooney has also revealed all in his
autobiography which is to come out shortly. And the weirdest thing about Wayne
Rooney, just in case you’ve not read it, is he can’t sleep without leaving the
vacuum cleaner on. So he needs the vacuum cleaner on to get to sleep. If
there’s no vacuum cleaner around, if he’s staying in a hotel then he turns on
the hairdryer and leaves that on all night. “I’ll often switch on a fan or a
hairdryer or the air conditioning, any sort of machine which makes a noise.”
Wayne says “I’ve ruined so many hairdryers by letting them burn out. Colleen
hates it.” You can’t believe that can you? “She won’t let me turn on a vacuum
or a fan, not when we’re together.” There you are, Wayne Rooney the biggest
fact from his autobiography is, unless he’s got a vacuum cleaner on then he
can’t sleep.

Losing Weight

Eat less and exercise more has long been the mantra for shedding those extra
pounds but now it seems all the hard work might have been in vain. Scientists
say there are 10 other reasons why Britons just keep getting bigger. They claim
that sleeping habits, central heating and even medicines and some pollutants
can play a role in weight gain. Let me tell you what some of them are.
Sleep - too little increases appetite.
Medicine – many modern medicines lead us to put on weight.
Mother’s age – older women are more likely to have obese children.
Choice of partner – overweight people tend to pair with each other and have
overweight children.
Heating and air conditioning – comfortable temperatures stop us burning off fat.
Genes – body shape may be partly inherited.
Giving up smoking – nicotine suppresses the appetite.
Weight at birth – underweight babies have a bigger risk of obesity.
Getting older – weight tends to increase with age.
There we are, several reasons why it might not be your fault that you are fat
so says an article out today.

Friends

If you’re a fan of the TV programme Friends, the cast of the sitcom looks set
to reunite in a deal worth an estimated £2 million each. Can you believe that?
Jennifer Aniston has confirmed rumours of a one-off special in which she’ll
play Rachel Green and there’s a possibility all of them could all get together.
The comedy, which ended in May 2004, told the story of six inseparable friends
in Manhattan but if they get together it will be at a cost of £2 million each.
Not bad if you can get the work!

Letter

If you know someone who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think they’d
like one then point them in the direction of one of the two addresses at the
bottom of the page. Tell them to click on there, follow the instructions
through and they’ll get their first and daily Levy Letter from me every day,
round about this time. If you’ve got something you think I should know about, a
story you think we might be able to use on the programme or if you’ve got a
problem you think we might be able to deal with on Leave it to Levy, then drop
me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look forward to hearing from you.

Well that’s about it from me for today. Enjoy these sizzling temperatures. If
you think it’s hot today, apparently it’s going to be even hotter tomorrow,
Wednesday. The details of course from Paul at 6.30pm. One final mention, this
Sunday night is the switching on of the summer illuminations at Mablethorpe.
Paul and I will be there all Sunday evening. If you can make it down or you
fancy a drive out you can watch the lights being switched on this Sunday
evening.

That’s it from me, take care, see you tonight at 6.30pm.

Peter
