Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight BBC One at 6.30pm for all the
day’s news. We’ll be looking at the proposed merger of Boston Grammar School
with Boston High School. Parents aren’t happy and they’ve formed an action
group to fight the plans. We’ll have the latest on the Colin Inglis trial and
we’ll report on Operation Catamaran. This is Humberside Police’s latest
initiative to target burglars in Hull. The police have been out this morning in
dawn raids and have arrested several people. I’ll be talking to the police
about the high number of burglaries and what they’re doing about them. We’ll
kick off the Humber Bridge birthday celebrations with an exclusive report with
the people who run the bridge on a daily basis and I’ll be chatting to Cheryl
Baker of Bucks Fizz fame about her memories of 1981 when they won Eurovision.
Plus of course the weather from Lisa Gallagher and Lisa will!
join me at the bridge tomorrow night.

Sport Relief

If you saw Look North last night you’ll know we’re still looking for runners to
do one mile on Saturday morning for Sport Relief. All the money raised goes to
very good causes, some in our part of the world. I’ll be there on Saturday
morning if you can get down to Queen’s Gardens and all you need to do if you’d
like to run the mile is just register, go to www.bbc.co.uk/sportrelief and if
you can make it down, I look forward to seeing you there with some of the
celebs who’ll be there as well. Saturday morning, Queen’s Gardens, get down
about 10.30am.

Beautiful People

You might think it likely that being beautiful makes you the teacher’s pet and
perhaps helps boost your grade. Researchers have found that good-looking
students also fair better than their plainer counterparts in exams which take
no account of physical appearance. Scientists say that attractive students
achieve superior results in oral tests but even better results in written exams
which are marked anonymously. This suggests their success is not just about
favouritism. Attractive children are thought to be given more attention by
their parents and teachers. This boosts their self esteem and may increase
their confidence helping them to succeed later in life. Do you believe that or
do you think it’s a load of twaddle? Well according to research, it is just out
- beautiful people pass the exam test.

Coronation Street

The programme is doing very well at the moment. It’s on extremely good form.
The wonderful comedian Roy Hudd, I used to love the News Huddlines he did on
the radio. Well Roy Hudd, he’s 70 now by the way, plays the old chirpy
undertaker Archie, Archie Shuttleworth in the Street. He says, “I have a
feeling that someone will be snuffing it very soon in the Street. I’ve just
been booked to film half a dozen episodes, so something’s up.” There we are,
the wonderful Roy Hudd booked for six appearances in Coronation Street. He’s
the undertaker so we have been warned!

Off work

Doctors are reporting a dramatic increase in people being signed off work for a
week or more because of stress and depression. I don’t think there’s any great
surprise to see more and more people are taking time off work because they are
fed up, they’re depressed or they say they’re stressed. One in three family
doctors has noticed a sudden rise in those asking to be signed off for more
than seven days. But far from blaming lazy workers, doctors claim that they’re
genuinely stressed. 94% of GPs blame employers, claiming they’re not taking
workers’ wellbeing seriously. A survey of doctors found that stress is the most
likely cause of ill health with 76% of companies agreeing. So there we are,
stress is the illness of the decade at the moment with many people taking time
off work because of it.

Pictures

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a digital picture of the region that you think
you’d like to be shown on the Big Screen then send it to me. It doesn’t matter
how unusual it is or it might be quite comical. Either way, send it to me
either a hard copy in the post or email me one to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and watch
out for it on the programme.

Sportswomen

I was talking to Dame Kelly Holmes last night on the programme. She was in Hull
yesterday to receive an honorary doctorate. What a lovely lady, fab to meet
her, a real honour and even nicer when you get to meet somebody you hope is
really nice and they were really nice. Talking of sportswomen, Paula Radcliffe
has announced that she’s pregnant and far from signalling the end of her
running career the 32-year-old marathon world record holder said motherhood
would make her more likely to carry on competing. Paula, who is 14 weeks
pregnant, will be taking a break from top flight competition and has dropped
out of the European Championships in Gothenburg which are being held next
month. However, she plans to continue training and even take part in some
low-key races whilst she’s pregnant. So there we are, that’s Paula Radcliffe
expecting her first child.

Wine

Well the cost of a typical bottle of wine from an off-licence has fallen from
£5.05 two years ago to £4.75 and the price of wine in supermarkets has gone up
just 11p in two years to an average of £3.86 a bottle. Apparently it’s never
been a better time for buying wine. The price of a bottle of wine actually gets
better like the wine with age. So if you’re a wine drinker, it’s better value
now than it was a couple of years ago. So enjoy.

Well that’s about it for today. Just a reminder we’re on BBC One at 6.30pm. I
hope you’ll be able to join me. Don’t forget, I’ll be talking about 1981
tonight, the year of course when the Humber Bridge was opened and on the
programme tonight we’ll have some facts and figures about the bridge as I
mentioned earlier, and of course if you can make it down tomorrow night we’ll
see you there between 6.30pm and 7pm on the Hessle Foreshore. Have a very good
afternoon. Enjoy the sunshine, I’ll see you tonight at 6.30pm. Look out for
your Levy Letter again tomorrow.

Bye for now, Peter.
