Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well. Halfway through the week, I hope you’ll be able to join me
tonight BBC One at 6.30pm. Paul is still away but rest assured he’ll be back on
Monday. Lisa will have the forecast and also on the programme tonight we’ll
find out whether a £30 million regeneration plan can save the East Riding’s
seaside resorts. What are the chances of Withernsea getting a new pier? The
Baths Hall in Scunthorpe has been a popular music venue for over 70 years but
we’ll hear tonight how it’s calling it a day. Double Olympic champion Kelly
Holmes will be in the region – find out why and we’re live at Barton Bike
Night, where over 10,000 visitors are expected.

Humber Bridge

At the risk of repeating myself, just a reminder that it’s a big weekend this
weekend – the celebrations for the Humber Bridge 25th anniversary. Lots of
things happening including a fireworks display on Saturday evening. The bridge
will be closed for 15 minutes between 10.45pm and 11pm. Also to mark the
occasion the programme will be coming live from the Hessle Foreshore on Friday
evening. So, Friday’s Look North live from Hessle Foreshore 6.30pm to 7pm if
you can make it down, we look forward to seeing you there. Lisa will be with me
as well.

Happiness

Well I’ve heard some barmy stories, but the latest is that happiness is key to
good learning. English schools are looking at a plan by an American psychology
professor who thinks schoolchildren should have lessons in happiness. The
psychology teacher says that anything that encourages students to have a more
optimistic outlook and seize the moment is a great thing. So there we are. I
managed to get through my schooling without any happiness classes. Having said
that I didn’t pass one exam and I haven’t got one qualification to my name. And
don’t say the obvious!

Retirement

For those of us who are thinking about retirement – or if it’s looming in the
not too distant future – there’s some new research out which suggests that
around half of us plan to remain in paid employment when we reach 65. While a
third intend to do voluntary work. One in three Britons aged between 50 and 64
claim they do not believe a traditional retirement is possible anymore. 22%
said they did not know if they would ever retire. In other words people are
thinking about working after retirement age because they can’t see any other
way around it. Interesting. Your views on retirement and indeed anything else.

you think we can deal with on the programme you can get me direct. Give me your

Chat up lines

Well chat up lines are as corny as ever including a list out today designed to
help romantics home and abroad. Such toe curling one-liners as “Do you believe
in love at first sight or shall I walk by again?” making it into a Top 10 list
which has been compiled by a book publisher. Here are a few more.
1. Was your father a thief because he stole the stars from the sky and put
them in your eyes.
2. Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?
3. Excuse me I seem to have lost my phone number, could I borrow yours?
4. Excuse me, do you kiss strangers? No, well let me introduce myself.
5. You must be tired; you’ve been running through my mind all day.

So there we are, some of the top 10 chat up lines just published in a book out
today.

EastEnders

After many many years, well 21 years to be exact, Pauline is quitting
EastEnders. Wendy Richard who’s played Pauline for 21 years is opting for, well
I’m not sure if it’s retirement, some people are saying retirement, others are
saying she’s going to be doing other things, either way Wendy Richard is
leaving EastEnders. In her time Wendy was extremely glamorous. I was watching a
Carry On film the other night on video, Carry On Matron and she was in that and
when she was young she was a very striking looking girl. She was extremely
attractive. She went on of course to play Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served?
She’s been playing Pauline for 21 years and there’s a great story that her
husband came to meet her one day from the set. As she left the building she was
beaming and smiling, apparently it was because in the course of that day’s work
she’d had to hit Arthur played by Bill Treacher over the head with a frying pan
and I gather she hit him rather harder than she should hav!
e done for a bit of filming. The reason, well she never got on with Bill
Treacher. I don’t know that first hand. It’s a second hand story but I do
believe it’s true. Anyway Wendy Richard is leaving EastEnders.

Pop singles

Well there was a time, a year, 18 months back when it looked like the days of
the single were well and truly gone. No longer were people going into record
shops and buying CD singles or as it was in the old days a vinyl single to play
at 45rpm. Sales of pop singles are at their highest now for six years. Why?
Well it’s all to do with computer downloads. After years of declining demand in
the shops, the single had looked doomed and within the traditional Top 40 chart
but now the number of songs downloaded at home is nearly one million a week
that’s up from just 14,000 two years ago and it’s still rising. So far this
year UK music fans have downloaded 24.3 million tracks and it’s all to do with
the fact that it’s so simple. I think one of the things and I’ve done it
myself, I’ve bought four or five singles this year, is the fact you can hear it
on the radio and from the comfort of your own home just go and click on, if you
do the iTunes, (other music downloads are available!) !
just buy your single straight away. You don’t have to make a journey to the
record shop. And of course they are considerably cheaper as well. Sales of
download singles are predicted to top 50 million this year, so therefore saving
the single. The other great thing about downloading music as well, when an
album comes out you don’t necessarily have to buy the whole album. You can just
pick your favourite tracks. Anyway the single is safe, of course Top Of The
Pops isn’t.

Email

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. Still emails coming through
suggesting guests for the programme. Keep them coming in. Obviously it’s easier
if we can have some kind of link with our part of the world for guests rather
than just randomly picking a big name you’d like on the programme. If there’s
someone who’s connected with our part of the world then do get in touch and
tell me why you would like them on the programme. Thanks too for several
emails, it was a national story, the day before yesterday, David Cameron was
saying we should all embrace and love hoodies. Well several people were
emailing me. Most of these are unreadable saying that they didn’t agree and we
shouldn’t embrace hoodies. Anyway, your views on that and indeed anything else
to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Pumpkin progress

For all of you who requested the pumpkin seeds back in May, we’d love to see
how they’re doing. Hopefully better than mine which have shrivelled up! Please
send me your photos either a hard copy or digitally. I’m afraid we won’t be
able to return the photos, so just send us a copy. I look forward to seeing
them and we’ll show some of them on the programme.

Well that’s it from me. Join me tonight BBC One at 6.30pm. And look out for
your Levy Letter tomorrow.

Take care, Peter.
