Hello it’s Peter here, welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. Hope your weekend was
good. If you had something organised or planned then despite the lousy weather
particularly yesterday, I hope it went well. The Dove House Hospice fair was
opened yesterday by the Coronation Street star who plays Frankie Baldwin, Debra
Stephenson, a Hull actress of course. Whatever you did at the weekend, I hope
it was good.

I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight, BBC One at 6.30pm. On the programme
tonight we’ll have the latest on the shenanigans surrounding John Prescott.
We’re also taking a look at plans for a waste incinerator at Saltend. We’ll
have the latest on the travellers camped in Skegness and we’ll be talking to a
gravedigger from Lincolnshire about the book he’s written about his job. That’s
sure to be a fascinating read. It’s the launch of the BBC Restoration series
and it features All Saints Church in Beckingham. And what’s that purple stuff
growing in the fields? We’ll be having a look at borage. Of course we’ll have
the detailed weather forecast from Lisa Gallagher. Join me tonight if you can.

Photos
Don’t forget if you’ve taken any photos recently on your digital camera and
you’d like them to be considered for the programme, as you know we have a
different one each night, then send it to me either a hard copy in the post or
electronically to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Houses
I was saying on Friday that for the first time in quite a while average house
prices fell last month. Not good news for home owners. Well the latest story on
homes is quite a comical one which you might have seen in the papers over the
weekend. Cliff Richard is downsizing from a very big house with an upstairs and
a downstairs to a large sized bungalow, maybe age is finally catching Cliff up
and in the years ahead he might not be able to manage the stairs. Bungalow Boy
rather than Batchelor Boy is the headline. He’s put his property on the market
and has bought a new bungalow. It’s only got three bedrooms; it sits in an acre
of land on the Wentworth Estate near to the golf club and nearby neighbours
include Russ Abbott, Bruce Forsyth and Gary Numan. The thing which everyone’s
being really cruel about is that they’re saying his new home only needs a
trolley park outside and it would look like the local Tesco’s and it still cost
an awful lot of money.

Bridge
Just a reminder that this weekend is the 25th birthday of the Humber Bridge.
There are all sorts of things going on including the big open air concert
starring Katherine Jenkins on Saturday night and a big fireworks display late
on Saturday night after the concert and that is on the bridge. The bridge will
be closed for traffic from 10.45pm to 11.00pm on Saturday night for the
fireworks as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations. And just a reminder, if
you’re around on Friday evening we’ll be doing the programme live from the
Hessle Foreshore. The guests will be down there, so will Lisa. If you can make
it along then make a note in your diary. Hessle Foreshore for around 6.15pm
Friday evening this week to see the programme going out live. I look forward to
seeing you there.

In the voice
Well whether it’s a Scottish burr or an Irish lilt or a cut glass English
accent, a man’s voice makes a big first impression on a woman. Well seven out
of 10 men admit they judge a woman on her looks, almost half of women say, this
is quite interesting, almost half say they respond to a man’s voice and his way
of speaking. University researchers who looked at how long it takes someone to
make an impression and why, found that women highlighted the importance of an
accent and many said a man’s voice revealed his personality. An overwhelming
nine in 10 people decided a potential partner’s suitability in just 15 seconds
with men taking an average of 14.7 seconds and women 16.8. That’s worth
stressing again isn’t it? An overwhelming nine in 10 people decided a potential
partner’s suitability in just 15 and a half seconds. There you are fellas, you
might not think it but it’s not so much to do with looks, it’s all to do with
the voice.

Number plates
Well personalised number plates, they were, I think about 10 years ago, the
height of popularity. I think they’ve waned a little bit but they’re still
fairly popular. Well a father has paid a world record price for a number plate
for his son’s 6th birthday. That’s the crucial thing. The anonymous bidder from
the north west has paid £331,000 for the registration M1. We don’t know his
name but the little boy can’t exactly use the number plate as he’s only six but
when he can use it, in another ten or eleven years’ time he will have the
number plate M1 and his father who’s obviously not hard up, paid £331,000.

Sport
Well after four weeks of football, it’s over. After two weeks of tennis, it’s
over. What are we going to do? Those people like several friends of mine who
are not interested in either and have been moaning that the television has been
blanket sport all the time will be relieved to know it’s over. Interesting that
the pampered tennis stars who as you know are not exactly hard up, they earn
more in a fortnight than most people dream of; they still think they’re
entitled to a few little extra perks it seems and the green bath towels that
bear the Wimbledon logo cost about £30 a time. They are supposed to be put back
after a game but some players make a habit of smuggling them off court in their
bags and it seems it’s not just the lesser known players. Roger Federer is not
immune. He was spotted walking off centre court with one of the distinctive
towels following his semi-final win. So even somebody who earns as much money
as him still nicks the towels. Now would we ever go any!
where and nick the towels?! What’s the best thing you’ve ever…no we shouldn’t
do that probably! But let me know, do email in on that and indeed anything else
and if you’ve got a problem you think we might be able to tackle in Leave It To
Levy then drop me a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Breathalyser phone
The first mobile phone aimed at drinkers is about to go on sale in this country
complete with a breathalyser that tests users’ fitness to drive and also a
sobriety lock-out to stop drunken late night phone calls. The phone is targeted
at hard living, hard drinking young people promising to help them avoid
drinking and driving and also drunk dialling. It’s about to go on sale. It
won’t let you do wrong or put a foot wrong.

That’s it from me today. Thank you for reading the Levy Letter. If there’s
anyone you know that’s not signed up for the Levy Letter then point them in the
right direction of one of the two addresses at the bottom of this page, click
on the address, click on Levy Letter and then sign up and they’ll get the first
Levy Letter the following day.

Join me tonight, BBC One at 6.30pm. Take care, bye for now.

Peter
