Hello it’s Peter here, welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope you can join
me tonight at half past Six on BBC One for tonight’s Look North. We’ll have all
the day’s news and stories including the amazing story of an 85 year old woman
forced to climb out of a window to escape masked raiders in her own home. We’ll
have more from her on the programme.

Tonight we’ll speak to the people whose job it is to walk the Lincolnshire
countryside finding official footpaths and rights of way. That sounds like a
nice job doesn’t it?

We know obesity is a growing problem amongst teenagers, well one school in Hull
is fighting back against flab with a special day dedicated to getting fit and
eating healthily. We’ll be meeting some of those children.

Research into out early ancestors is coming to Hull with a fragment of bone
brought from the Natural History Museum to Hull University for testing. We’ll
be looking into that.

It was supposed to be crunch time for East Yorkshire’s answer to the Angel of
the North, but after hours of deliberation, guess what… judges failed to reach
an agreement for a welcoming sculpture to the region. We’ll find out what
happens next.

Of course Paul will have the forecast as ever, and you’ll hear all the rest of
the days news and stories from around your region tonight at six thirty on BBC
One with Look North.

Alan Freeman

I was not writing the letter yesterday as you know, but the news came through
the day before about the death of legendary DJ Alan Freeman, an absolute star
for many people who enjoyed listening to pop radio in my kind of age group. And
I think I mentioned before, there was a time when I was working as a teenager,
as an actor. Well when I wasn’t actually working on an acting job, I would help
out at Moss Bros at Covent Garden fitting people out in their outfits for posh
functions. Well Alan Freeman came in and wanted a morning suit, because he was
going off to Royal Ascot, so I fitted him out with his morning suit and I said
to him that I wanted to be a radio DJ, and he invited me to go to BBC Radio One
and watch him do his Saturday afternoon show. I sat there in the studio and
watched him talking to the nation. I was only about 17 at the time, and of
course that fired me up for wanting to do radio, and he was always something of
a hero. So it was a great honour that I actual!
ly got to meet him of two occasions, once spending the whole afternoon with
him. I remember sitting in the Radio One studio sitting on a silver record box
as my chair to watch his programme go out. Alan Freeman will be sadly missed in
the broadcasting world.

Leave It

Don’t forget if you think we have some problems that you think we might be able
to tackle in Leave it to Levy then drop me a line, give me the details, and
we’ll try to sort them out. Don’t forget to give me a telephone number as well.
The usual address of course is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look forward to hearing from
you.

Shoes

Now for the ladies, imagine owning one pair of shoes for every day of the
month, or maybe you don’t have to, because research shows that 2.6 million
women in this country do actually have thirty pairs of shoes. Another 5
million, or 20% of the total own between 16 and 30 pairs, from simple training
shoes to high heels. A study claims the female fascination with the shoe is
growing more and more rapidly in Britain than anywhere else in Europe. Women in
this country buy more shoes than anywhere else in Europe, and we have the
highest percentage of women aged over 16 with a collection of 30 pairs of shoes.

Office Party

I think we’re having an office party shortly. Well the office party is becoming
the latest casualty of political correctness, so says a new article. Bosses
have been warned that they could face legal action if drunken staff do not get
home safely. If party music and entertainment caters only for younger staff,
the organisers might breach the age discrimination laws, and holding a raffle
of giving out alcoholic prizes could offend Muslims, warned ACAS the government
quango charged with settling industrial disputes. And they’ve published a
pamphlet with some of the dos and don’ts for Christmas parties. Don’t give meat
or alcohol as prizes if you have a raffle, because that could offend. Another
here, can you believe this? Do carry out a proper risk assessment before
putting up decorations. Ensure staff have taxi numbers or put on a bus to take
all drunken staff home, and finish the party while public transport is still
running. And do make sure there is a mix of music to avoid!
discrimination claims, so if you play all young music the old people could
actually have a discrimination claim. It’s hard to believe it, isn’t it, but
the office party is becoming too risky for bosses because they’re fraught with
problems.

Charlotte

Charlotte Church is parting company with the record label that launched her
career. A spokesman for the 20 year old singer said it was a mutual decision,
but just recently her record sales haven’t been that good. The interesting
thing is that her TV show that lots of Levy Letter readers complained about,
has turned out to be a great hit, and it’s done so well on Channel Four late
nights that two more series are planned. So that was a hit even though we
probably thought it was a flop.

TV

We were talking the other night to Sheridan Smith about on the programme. She
starred in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, which was on BBC Two last
night. Just looking ahead to tonight, there’s a series that I’ve enjoyed a lot
and I’m looking forward to it coming out on DVD to buy a copy, and that is
Coast. Apparently on the programme tonight they’re featuring Bempton Cliffs at
eight o’ clock on BBC Two.

Well that’s it from me today, have a very good day and enjoy your afternoon,
and join me tonight on BBC One at six thirty. And don’t forget to spread the
word, if you know anyone who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter, and they’d
like one, then point them in the direction of one of the links at the bottom of
this page and get them signed up. Take care, bye.
