Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight at half past six. I’ll
have all the day’s news and also Paul will have the forecast as usual.

It’s a very busy programme tonight. We’ve got a lot to talk about. We'll have
the latest on the news that from the New Year, there will be just one GP
available to provide an out of hours doctors service for the whole of the East
Riding. We’ll be finding out how that will impact on the service provided and
what it’ll mean for residents living in the area.

After the death at the weekend of two firefighters at the blaze at the
fireworks factory in East Sussex, this has reminded us how dangerous the job of
a firefighter can be. Look North will be going behind the scenes with
Humberside Fire and Rescue service to see how the new recruits are trained to
cope with this dangerous job.

And it’s a far cry from policing the streets of Hull – did you know that Hull
has links with Caribbean drug runners? Look North has been given rare access to
the city's affiliated warship, Iron Duke, as it patrols the South Atlantic.
It’s part of an international fleet of ships trying to stop drugs getting onto
our streets. We’ll have our exclusive report later on the programme.

Plus I’m sure the fans are reeling at the news of Phil Parkinson’s sacking
yesterday. We'll have the latest from Hull City in their search for a new
manager. Fans are calling for Kevin Keegan and Ian Dowie to replace Parkinson –
could the fans’ dreams come true with those suggestions for a new manager?
We’ll be getting the latest from the club.

And the idea of swimming outside in this weather may not be that appealing to
some, but find out why lidos are experiencing a revival in Woodhall Spa. Plus
as Lincoln Cathedral is given its single biggest donation of one million
pounds, I'll be finding out how they're going to be spending it. All that
tonight on Look North at half past six on BBC One. I hope you can join me then.

Sports Awards

Well done to all our winners on the BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Sports
Awards, which was held at The Deep last night. It was a very successful
evening. Well done to all our winners and you can find out more about who they
were by tuning in today to Look North.

Pictures

Some excellent pictures have been sent to us in the last day or two. Either
good weather or bad weather always prompt some startling pictures to come
through. But we want more, particularly from Lincolnshire. If you’ve got a
picture that you’re proud of that we could show on the programme, and it can be
a funny one as well or of people, then let me have it. It’s the usual address
of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For Sale

Home buyers looking for a snap, then I’ve got just the house for you. It’s a
bargain. It’s only going to cost you a thousand pounds! That’s all that’s being
asked for a three bedroom family home worth around £120,000. But beneath the
sitting room of the comfortable semi-detached house is a mineshaft, which drops
a thousand feet underground. This bargain house, in Redruth in Cornwall, will
be auctioned on Wednesday at the reserve price of just a thousand pounds. The
house is fine. It looks good from outside. And of course if the mineshaft
doesn’t give way, then you’re fine. If it does give way, then you’re not so ok!
It’s been offered at just a thousand pounds – is it worth the risk?

Post Office

Thousands of post offices in towns and cities across Britain are on the brink
of closure, campaigners warned last night. Until now, the crisis in the
country’s post office network has focussed on rural branches, but now a new
report has found that for every rural post office lost, more than eight
branches in built up areas have gone to the wall with many more set to follow
it. It means that millions of people are being left without access to vital
services. Poor families and pensioners are the hardest hit. Almost a third of
urban branches, about two thousand five hundred, have closed in the past three
years, according to the Think Tank, the new economics foundation. More than one
in six of those were in deprived areas. The report warns that there is a
tipping point where, without urgent action, many of the remaining branches will
be forced out of business. When post offices close, other small shops that rely
on them for trade follow leading to ghost communities. So that’s on!
the subject of post offices and the growing number of closures. It’s a great
shame if we lose all of our post offices. I know that many elderly people rely
totally on them for pensions and other services. It’s a story we’ve done on
Look North and I’m sure we’ll continue to follow it.

Behind The Scenes

Now here’s your chance to produce a piece for Look North. Is there something
you’ve never seen on Look North that you want to know more about? Have you ever
passed a building and thought, “I’d love to know what goes on in there?” Is
there a beauty spot that you think should have a wider audience? We want your
suggestions for a series of forthcoming Look North films. So if you’re
fascinated by Grantham’s sewers or want to see the parts of Hull’s Guildhall
which are closed to the public, then contact us here at Look North. I’m sure
we’re all guilty of it – typical nosy neighbours! Well, if you fancy a nose
about any old building, new building, empty building, then let us know. Or if
you want to learn more about somebody’s job and what they do behind the scenes,
then get in touch. Email me and let me know to the usual address of [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Amateurs

Don’t forget if you’re involved in an amateur group or a society and you’d like
a little plug in the Levy Letter, then get in touch. Give me the details and
the performance times and who’s in it and I’ll give you a plug in the Letter.
The usual address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good day. Join me for tonight’s
programme on BBC One at 6.30pm as usual.

Bye for now,

Peter
