Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope you’ll be
able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. I’ll have all the day’s news and
Paul will have the forecast.

On tonight's programme, I'll have the latest on the impact of the one hundred
and ninety job losses at Lincoln Castings. Last night, after our report on the
programme, we’ve had so many messages and emails from people in the area saying
how sorry they are to hear this news and how they wish all the workers good
luck in finding new jobs. I think this has really touched a lot of people,
especially as it’s just before Christmas. Tonight on the programme, I'll be
speaking to a local MP about the situation as these workers cope facing the
dole just before Christmas.

Also tonight, we'll be finding out why the National Lottery has cut funding for
two very important projects in East Yorkshire. These projects offer advice and
help to disabled people in our region and there are fears that this will affect
a great many vulnerable people.

We'll have more on the controversy over the MOD's low flying policy. We’ll be
speaking to concerned local farmers, worried over the safety of their livestock
and speaking to a horse rider, injured after her horse was spooked.

Plus we'll be meeting the region's busiest man. A Hull man is working around
the clock in order to meet the demand for his hand made chocolates. And,
they’re polishing their trombones and trumpets - we'll have an exclusive
preview of a new piece of music inspired by The Deep. All that tonight on BBC
One at 6.30pm.

Emails

Thanks for the emails and letters on a variety of subjects. There’s one here
from Elizabeth and this one is quite controversial. “My Dad is very greedy and
has decided that he will not take two members of my family out for Christmas
dinner. He has said that he will not pay £35.00 each for a meal that’s £140.00
plus drinks for the four of us. His big excuse is that he takes us to the pub
on Sunday, where we have chicken, veg and pudding for £3.50 each or two for
£7.00. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, a prawn cocktail, chicken and
vegetables and a pudding jumps to £35.00 each! You also get a cracker to pull.
Why do empty pubs put £25.00 on top of the price of a meal?” So a controversial
one there from Elizabeth. Your views on the hiked up prices at Christmas are
welcomed. But Elizabeth’s Dad has decided that he’s not going to pay for the
Christmas meal when he can normally get it for £3.50 each! Sounds like a very
sensible man to me.

Abroad

Britons are now emigrating in their biggest numbers for forty years. Listen to
this! Every three minutes a British national starts a new life overseas! At
least 5.5 million Britons, that’s one in ten, are permanently living in a
foreign country. Another million are likely to leave in the next five years.
The Institute for Public Policy Research says that more than one hundred and
ninety-eight thousand people left the UK to start new lives abroad last year.
And only ninety-one thousand actually returned. Can you believe that? Nearly
two hundred thousand people left the UK to emigrate to live abroad last year.
And one British national starts a new life overseas every three minutes of
every day. The top places to emigrate to – well, by far and away the most
popular place is Australia and at number two is Spain. That probably doesn’t
surprise you much! Then there’s quite a drop down to the United States, then
Canada and then Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Germany an!
d Cyprus. Sixty-five thousand people went to Cyprus last year. There you are.
But Australia is the top destination for living abroad.

Photos

We’ve had some very good photos in these last couple of days. If you’ve got one
that you think would make a good one to show on the programme, then do drop me
the line and send it to me electronically, to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

By the way, thanks to all the parents and pupils of Victoria Dock primary
school, who I met on Monday evening at the Timber Dock pub. They have all been
making fairies for the pub and they were being honoured by the brewery and had
their picture taken with me. So thanks to all the parents and pupils at the
school for coming along on Monday.

Alcohol

Drinking at least one glass of wine or beer every day helps you live longer.
That’s music to your ears isn’t it? And especially just before Christmas! Men,
who drink up to four small bottles of beer, or four small glasses of wine a
day, will cut their risk of dying by almost a fifth. It just gets better and
better doesn’t it? Women, who drink two glasses of wine, or two bottles of
beer, will achieve the same benefit. Doctors only knew that drinking red wine
in moderation cuts the risk of suffering heart disease, but the latest research
into one million people shows that drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of
death from all causes. Experts believe that compounds found in wine, beer and
cider may protect the body from cancer, diabetes and heart problems, because
alcohol reduces the levels of bad cholesterol while boosting the amount of good
cholesterol in the blood. If you like a drink, then that’s probably the best
story that you’re going to hear over Christmas.

Christmas Show

If you’re going to one of the pantomimes or Christmas shows in our part of the
world over the next few weeks, then enjoy. I think the pantomime at Hull opens
on Thursday and of course it stars the Chuckle Brothers. And just a quick
mention for BBC Radio Humberside and Look North’s pantomime. This year it’s
Dick Whittington and its first performance is tonight at Cleethorpes. So good
luck to all the cast and the crew in Dick Whittington. I hope it goes very well
indeed. There are still tickets available for most of the performances, so ring
the box office for more information on 01482 226655. The pantomime is raising
more money for Radio Humberside’s Making Waves appeal and all the money will go
to the emergency services teams on our East Coast. And everyone, who’s given
money to that appeal, then thank you. It’s amazing. They’ve now raised over
£25,000! So well done to everybody.

TV

Don’t forget your suggestions for your favourites of the year on the TV. I see
that the BBC has axed the talent show, Strictly Dance Fever, after two series.
It was hosted by Graham Norton. The reason is that the one that he did – How Do
You Solve A Problem Like Maria? trying to find the lead for the Sound of Music,
was a much greater hit with the audience. Now the BBC are in the hunt for a
lead for productions like Joseph or Grease. They want to do a similar sort of
programme again. So if you like that sort of programme, then there’ll be more
on the way. But Strictly Dance Fever has been axed after two series. Don’t
forget, let me know what you’re particularly enjoying at the moment. I enjoyed
sitting through, not all, but a big chunk of the Royal Variety performance last
night. What did you think?

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm as
usual for Look North. Look out for your Levy Letter again tomorrow.
