Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm as
usual. I’ll have all the day’s news and of course Paul will have the weekend
forecast.

On tonight's programme, I'll be looking at how your money has been spent
funding a survey on East Riding Council's performance that is now being kept
secret. I’ll have the full story on that tonight. Plus I'll be getting reaction
in Lincoln to the news that up to two hundred workers at an engineering firm
are now facing an uncertain Christmas.

I'll be meeting the record breaking golfer, who bizarrely plays with a club in
each hand. And I'll be chatting to the phenomenal rock band, Status Quo.
They’ve been hugely popular for decades and are still going strong touring
around the world. But is time catching up with these ageing rockers? Do you
think they’ll mind me asking that!? I’ll be chatting to Status Quo tonight on
the programme. I hope you can join me then.

Christmas

Late night shopping last night – I did a little bit in Hull last night and
picked up a few bits and bobs and of course, it’ll be extremely busy in the
shops now that we’re into December. Next Thursday, just while I think about it,
is the celebrity carol concert at the Street Life museum in Hull. The tickets
are £15.00. It’s in aid of the Lord Mayor’s charity. Blair Jacobs will be the
Master of Ceremonies and there’ll be readings by Alan Plater, the well-known
playwright of course and Hull City supporter and Liam Mower as well. I’ll be
there to do a reading as well. If you can make it along, then it’s Thursday
night at 7.30pm at the Street Life museum for our celebrity carol concert.

Vain Men

Well, vanity is driving British men to splash out almost one hundred million
pounds a year going under the plastic surgeon’s knife. New figures show that
men, following the example of a huge number of women, increasingly want to
improve their looks and bodies. They now account for a fifth of the £1.8
million pounds being spent on cosmetic surgery every day in the UK. Can you
believe that? £1.8 million pounds being spent on cosmetic surgery every day!
That’s an absolute staggering total isn’t it? One of the most popular
treatments is Botox. This started off being popular with just women using it on
the lips and forehead, but now there is huge pressure on men, competing in a
market place for younger girlfriends. Especially for men in their middle years,
who get divorced and have to start again. According to the experts, men are
going for Botox! That figures are just extraordinary aren’t they? The papers
are lampooning David Guest, who appears on I’m A Celebrity at the moment. !
His face just doesn’t look real. It looks like he’s wearing a mask. Well,
that’s what cosmetic surgery has done for him!

Bacon Sandwich

We all love them, or most people do, maybe not the vegetarians amongst us, but
the humble bacon buttie is the latest victim of a health warning. Those, who
eat rashes more than five times a week, increase their risk of bladder cancer
by 60%, according to new research. Processed meat has been linked to the
disease in previous studies, but this is the first time that a specific meat
has been identified. The bacon sarnie has long been a favourite in Britain’s
Greasy Spoon transport cafes! So will this put us off eating them? I very much
doubt it!

Trains

I did a train journey myself the other day. Just a short journey and yet I
couldn’t believe how much the ticket cost. Apparently, 40% of people are using
the trains more today than they were ten years ago. And in another ten years
30% more will be using the trains again. One report this week though is
actually talking about the train fares. The rail fares are going up again,
making our trains the most expensive in the EU. An average trip between London
and Manchester is £202! A similar journey between Madrid and Cordoba in Spain
is £56.10! Or between Paris and Dijon - £54.38! Rail users are going to be hit
by another round of inflation busting fares, cementing our status as the
dearest place in Europe in which to travel by train.

Weekend

If you’ve got something planned at the weekend or organised, then I hope it
goes very well indeed. Don’t forget, if you’re involved in something for
charity or for a good cause, or if you’re an amateur dramatic group and you’d
like a plug in the Levy Letter, then drop me a line. Alan Collins did just
that. He phoned up the Look North hotline last night and left a message for me.
He wanted to tell me about Hull’s Male Voice Choir, who are performing tonight
at the Guildhall. They’ll be starting their performance at 7.30pm in the Lord
Mayor’s Parlour. So if you fancy going along, then pop down to the Guildhall
tonight for Hull’s Male Voice Choir. All the best to Alan and to the choir and
I hope their performance goes well. Thanks for getting in touch Alan.

Also if you’ve got a story that you think I should know about, or if you want
to simply drop me a line about anything at all, then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If over the weekend, you’re chatting with anyone, who’s not subscribed to the
Levy Letter and you think they would like one, then tell them to go to one of
the two addresses at the bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter, follow the
instructions through. They’ll then get their first daily free Levy Letter from
me every day from Monday.

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good weekend and join me tonight
at half past six. Look out for your Levy Letter again on Monday.

Bye for now

Peter
