Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. It’s the start of
another week here on Look North and there’ll be a Levy Letter from me every day
this week. I hope you’ve had a good weekend. I know that a lot of people were
doing their Christmas shopping. Whatever you had planned, then I hope you
enjoyed it and that your preparations for Christmas are well underway. It’s the
start of another week. It’s my last week on Look North before Christmas. I hope
you can join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

On tonight's programme, I'll have the latest on the row over new houses being
built in a flood-prone area in Goole. Plus we'll be talking with the ex-trawler
men, who are still fighting to sort their pensions out. And after a body of a
woman was found in Lincolnshire, we'll have the latest on the murder enquiry in
the area.

Also tonight, I'll have the amazing story of the Hull woman, who coughed up an
air gun pellet twenty-one years after she was shot in the face. Plus I'll have
the story of the woman, who may die unless she has all her teeth removed. And
we'll be taking a look at the sandwich, found in a Grimsby house, that's over
one hundred years old! Can you believe that? I dread to think what it smells
like now! All that tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Letter

If there's someone you know, who’s not signed up for the Levy Letter and you
think they would like one, then tell them to get in touch. Tell them to go to
one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter,
follow the instructions through and they’ll get their first and daily email
from me every day from the following day.

Houses

As you know, house prices are something I’ve talked about in the Levy Letter
quite a lot. The latest figures just top it all. House prices have risen by an
inflation-busting 10% over the last year, according to one of the biggest
mortgage lenders. It means that an average house is going up in value by £50.00
a day! A decade ago, the average cost of a home was just £60,000. Now it is
£187,995 and will soon hit the £200,000 mark. The Halifax said that house
prices have risen faster in 2006 than had been predicted, jumping by 1.7% last
month alone. That’s nearly twice as much as November of last year. So the
average price of a house in this country, and of course there are many way
above the average, is going up by £50.00 a day! Just extraordinary figures
aren’t they?

Lies

Top ten porkies that we tell – do you know what they are? Well, there’s a list
just published. How many times have you said – “I’m fine” in the past week?
“Nothing’s wrong, I’m fine” – well that’s the number one porky pie that we
tell. At number two – “nice to see you!” Obviously that means it’s not nice to
see you! At number three – “sorry I missed your call” – obviously we weren’t.
“I haven’t got any cash on me I’m afraid” – that’s the fourth most-told lie in
this country. “I’ll give you a ring” at number five. Number six is – “I don’t
have any spare change.” At seven – “no I’m afraid I don’t have five minutes.”
Well, actually that doesn’t sound like a lie. It just sounds like honesty
doesn’t it? “I’ll give up tomorrow” is another lie. At nine – “just what I
always wanted.” – just in time for Christmas that one! “We’ll have to meet up
soon” at ten, meaning I have no intention of meeting up ever! Those are the top
ten lies and the most often told lies in this country.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. There’s one here from Abby.
She’s picking up on me saying last week to get in touch if you’re reading any
good books at the moment. She says, “You want people to recommend good books.
Well, one of the best that I’ve recently read, is ‘Why Do Men Have Nipples?’
It’s great and has lots of questions that you want to ask your doctor, but
would only ask after having several martinis! I loved it. It was full of
useless information of the best kind!” So there you are. That’s Abby
recommending – ‘Why Do Men Have Nipples?’ I’ve never heard of it to be honest.

Tracy writes in – “Can you recommend the book by Bill Bryson called ‘The
Thunderbolt Kid’ and also ‘Marley and Me’. That’s a story about a Labrador dog.
It’s sad and tissues should be at hand. I cried towards the end of the book.”
Also Tracy recommends ‘Nobbut A Lad’ by Alan Titchmarsh, which she says is also
a good read. That’s the book that I’m reading just at the moment. We had Alan
on the programme just a few weeks ago. It’s a great book and is all about his
childhood in the fifties, being brought up in Ilkley in West Yorkshire. It’s
beautifully observed and a really good read.

There’s a note here from Richard Dodd. He says, “Reference to your Levy Letter
and books. I, of course, have a book to recommend people to read and that is
‘Benson And The Wishing Machine’, written by my wife. It’s her first novel!”
And thank you very much indeed for letting me know about it! That’s from
Richard Dodd. His wife has written her first book and it’s just published!

Pictures

Don’t forget, every night we show a picture on the programme. If you’ve got a
special photograph that you’ve taken just recently that you’re particularly
proud of and you think it would look good, then show it to me. Or if it’s a
funny picture or something just a little bit different, then send it to me and
let me have it. We’ll put it on the programme one night, so look out for it.
The address, of course, is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And talking of pictures, and talking of books, there is a book out at the
moment. I did mention this a few weeks’ ago. It’s a hardback book called ‘A
Portrait Of Hull’. The words are written by Ian Carstairs. Chiefly it’s a
picture book, with views of Hull. It’s a lovely coffee table book, but,
although there are so many books about Hull, a lot of them don’t have good
quality colour pictures of Hull like this one. I can highly recommend it.

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good afternoon. Join me tonight
on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
