Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Thursdays Levy Letter. I hope your day is going well and I hope you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six as usual. I'll have all the day's news and Paul will have the forecast.
On tonight's programme, we'll be in Immingham where families are being regularly showered in coal dust. They say they are paying too high a price for progress. Well be getting their story tonight on the programme. Well be in Boston where campaigners for a new bypass have resorted to putting up their own candidates in the forthcoming local elections in order to get their voice heard in the council. Plus we'll be at the region's biggest hospital where managers are complaining that they're fed up with crowds of smokers gathering on their grounds. I'll be chatting to a Lincolnshire school teacher, who has come up with an innovative new way of teaching what must be one of the most difficult school subjects of all. He'll be putting my maths to the test. Im not looking forward to it! And I'll be asking if the Great British Tea Break is under threat as engineers in some of our region's factories face going without their much valued cuppa. Thats all tonight on BBC One at half past six. And dont forget if youre out and about and you see something that you think we should know about, then think of us first. Wed love to speak to you and your story could be on Look North tonight! If its urgent, then ring straight away to our Hull newsroom on 01482 323232. Thanks for all the emails on a variety of subjects. Still loads more coming in on the Paul Cooke story and also emails from people wanting plugs for events. Just a couple of things - theres a letter here from the Hull Ladies Choir. Their latest venture is a charity concert in Hull at the Guildhall on Tuesday 15th May at 7.30pm. Theyre raising funds for the Humber Rescue and the Holderness House Care Scheme. We wish them all the very best and good luck for the 15th May. And theres also a little note here from the Michelle Hatton School of Dance. Their ten year show is called Get On Your Feet. Its being performed by the students at the school at the Leisure World in Bridlington. Thats on the 4th and the 5th of May. So good luck to them for their big show. And also the staff at the Howarth Court Residential Home are having a summer fair starting from 1pm until 5pm. Thats on Saturday 14th July. We wish them all the very best and I hope it goes well! Banks I was talking about banks in the Levy Letter the other day. There are a huge number of emails from people complaining about them, about the high charges and about their non UK call centres. Theres been the story on the programme and there are a couple of people here, whove done it and theyve been checking out this website about claiming back your bank charges. Martin Lewis told us about it on the programme and described how the website can help you claim back bank charges made on your account. Many people are doing it and I know many people have written in to say that theyve already got money back from their banks. Now I see that thirteen thousand people a day are switching banks, because theyre unhappy. Thats extraordinary isnt it? People wont stand for poor deals and uncompetitive prices anymore. The issue of bank charges has prompted thirteen thousand people a day to switch! Are you one of them? And if youre interested in investigating how you can claim back your! bank charges, then take a look at the website www.moneysavingexpert.com. Change Well, youve only got to look at the skyline of Hull now and see the cranes around St Stephens to know that things are changing. Its looking good and there are lots of things planned. I was interested to read one line in a local paper that was talking about the cinema, which is going to open in Princes Quay in the Autumn. It says, a ten million pound multi-screen cinema will open in Princes Quay by Christmas. Facilities will include extra wide seats! So is that in line with Hulls title of the Obese Capital of Europe? So there will be extra wide seats on the way in Hulls new cinema. Millionaires Women account for nearly half of the millionaires in Britain for the first time, according to research just out. Huge successes in their careers or the divorce courts have made many women extraordinarily wealthy. 46% of the countrys millionaires are female, according to a report just out. Website Dont forget, if you havent been to our website yet, then you must go and take a look. Its www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. Youll find lots of features on there up to date news, the days weather forecast and clips from the show. And if you missed any of the reports or if you missed the whole show and youd like to watch Look North in full, then go to that address and take a look. There is a link on there to watch the programme in full. Boss A little humour at work is reckoned to build team spirit and create a better atmosphere. Bosses were warned yesterday against playing the joker themselves though. Business school researchers said that cracking gags like David Brent in The Office can alienate staff and also customers. Top tips for bosses make yourself the butt of the joke occasionally to make yourself appear more open and approachable, avoid being cast as the office clown and think twice before sending that funny email to everyone! Steer clear of death, religion and other topics that can cause offence and avoid putdowns that repeatedly highlight colleagues shortcomings as this can lead to a tribunal! So top tips there for bosses. Well, that's it from me for today. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon and join me tonight as usual on BBC One at half past six.
