Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on Look North at half past six
as usual.
It looks like a lovely clear day today so far, but who knows how long that will
last? We’ll have the weather forecast today with Paul as usual so watch that to
find out the latest predictions.

Thank you for all your emails, texts, and phone calls recently, we’re
continuing to get lots of messages about our coverage of the floods, it’s a
story that people are still directly affected by in lots of our region. We had
a lot of messages on our story yesterday about the elderly woman fined £75 for
dropping a cigarette end on the floor, a big response on this one with people
coming out on both sides. Lots of people thought it was an over reaction
compared to some of the punishments for other offences such as speeding, but
there were also lots of people who thought littering was a serious crime and
should be punished. Thank you for all of those and keep them coming in.

On tonight’s programme we’ll be continuing our coverage of the floods and their
impact on our region, plus all the day’s tops stories, and I don’t know if
you’ve seen the trails for our special flood programme tomorrow night but it’s
going to be on BBC One at 7.30, it’s called A Forgotten City and it’s presented
by Paul Hudson. Paul will be looking at the city of Hull and how it’s
recovering from the floods, it’s got some of the amazing pictures we’ve
gathered, and if you’ve been affected by the floods or if you’re wondering how
people are dealing with the devastation then it’s a must see. That’s A
Forgotten City, it’s on Wednesday night at 7.30 on BBC One and it’s presented
by Paul.

Rain

Well it’s one of the questions everybody’s been asking after recent events, why
has the rain been so bad and have we done anything to cause it? A new study
published by scientists is the first to find a “human fingerprint” in the
recent weather. The study by the Met Office is based on a world wide comparison
or weather data going back as far as 1925, and it claims that greenhouse gas
emissions are causing our climate to change, and is part of a long term rise in
rainfall due to emissions. That’s not really what we wanted to hear is it?
The study, while not conclusive, claims that we could be in line for drier
summers and wetter winters. So this year’s extreme weather could actually
become the norm from now on.

Rock Stars

Well he’s a rock music legend, and he does have big hair but you might not know
that Brian May is due to complete a PhD he began back in 1971 before he joined
the band Queen – now that’s not exactly a rock cliché is it?
Apparently the guitarist is a keen astronomer and recently published a book on
the subject with Sir Patrick Moore. May is going to spend time in the Canary
Islands to observe “zodiacal dust clouds”. I don’t know what those are, but it
doesn’t sound very rock and roll. He’s due to present his thesis to academics
at London’s Imperial College where he will be questioned on his work before any
Doctorate is awarded. That’s what it says here anyway. Well done to him, and
swapping the guitar for a telescope does prove that you can go against type,
even if it seems like an unlikely career move.

If you have any events for a good cause you want mentioned in the Levy Letter
you can send them to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I’ll see if I can give it a
plug. I received this yesterday from Phil,

“Hi peter, A couple of months ago there was an item on "Look North", about the
Humber Lifeboat, and it inspired me to build the latest Airfix kit of this
lifeboat. The kit was donated by "The Modelshop" in Ferensway, and it took 3
weeks to build. We are planning to have a raffle, with the model as 1st prize.
All monies received will be donated to the RNLI. The tickets are available at
the Modelshop, priced £1.oo ea. There will 2nd & 3rd prizes as well of unmade
lifeboat kits.”

So if you fancy having a chance to win a model of a lifeboat then try to make
it along to that shop on Ferensway in Hull. It might be worth going down to
have a look as well, it sounds interesting, and of course it’s all to a very
good cause.

If you know somebody who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think
they’d like one, get them to go to www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull and click on
Levy Letter and they can sign up and start receiving their free daily Levy
Letter from the very next day. Well that’s about it from me today, I hope you
can join me tonight on BBC One at half past six as usual. Bye for now.

Peter
