Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight for Look North at half past
six.
Coming up tonight on Look North it’s an Olympics special to mark the start of
the 5 year countdown to the games.

We ask how Yorkshire and Lincolnshire will be sharing in the Olympic dream. And
I'll be speaking to the government Minister responsible for the Olympics, Tessa
Jowell to see what she has to say.

We'll hear from athletes looking to the future and hoping to compete in the
games. It seems an awful long way away doesn’t it? It’s amazing athletes are
already aiming for success.

And we find out what's in it for our local facilities and how easy will it be
for families in our region to get to see events. Of course the games are based
in London, but interest will be high all over the country.

And we'll have all the rest of the day's news as usual, and also the weather
forecast. Last night Paul was in the studio, and we had a couple of messages
saying he must have been getting ready for a job interview because he looked so
smart! Well he was just dressing up for his visit to our Hull studios. Quite
right too.

Well we’re still hearing lots of stories across the region of how we’re dealing
with the floods, there was that excellent programme last night of course, A
Forgotten City which was presented by Paul. And I had this email from the
Caxton Players in Grimsby who have their own story of overcoming adversity,

“Although we are not flooded, the heavy rainfalls are still causing other
problems, here at the Caxton Theatre in Grimsby rain has got in causing about
£5000 worth of damage to ceilings walls and decor, in wartime I suppose this
would be called 'collateral damage'. But the old saying "the show must go on"
is one that we believe in. So despite our problems our next production "An
Inspector Calls" will still open on Saturday the 28th and run until Saturday
4th August. An opportunity to be entertained and forget one’s problems for a
couple of hours.”

Well done to the Caxton Players, and if you’re in the Grimsby area do try and
see that, as they say, the show must go on!

Pop Stars

When it comes to pop stars, you might think they’re all called something exotic
or lyrical like Bon Jovi, Freddie Mercury, or Madonna, but apparently the most
common pop star names are a lot more ordinary than you’d think.
I saw this on the BBC News website today, and it has the top 10 most common pop
star names, based on the number of number one singles. Number one was the
fairly ordinary Paul, with people like McCartney and Weller. Number two was the
everyday John. Three was David – hardly exotic. Brian was four, George at five.
The last five were Mark, Peter, Tony, Andy, and Shane. So there we are, if
you’ve got an average or “boring” name you’re just as likely to become a star
as if you’re called Elvis.

Lifestyle

It’s the time of year when groups of young people will be running community
schemes as part of the Lifestyle programme run by the Police. I’ve had an email
appealing for help, this comes from a group called “Bridlington’s Bovvered
Bunch”,

“We live in Bridlington and our project is about showing the relevant agencies
and authorities that we are bothered about the young people in Bridlington. We
have surveyed 1,700 ten to sixteen year olds and have amassed a lot of data. We
want to put our findings onto a DVD so it can be used as evidence to hopefully
kick start a programme of improvement for the kids. However we have been badly
let down and although we have a camcorder and a computer we have no knowledge
of how to go about making this DVD. We have been offered some help for a day in
August, but the project has to be completed by the beginning of Sept. Are there
any 'film makers' who can spare the time during August to help us and help us
edit what we do?”

So there’s a challenge for you, if you can edit videos, or if you know someone
who can and would like to help then contact them on 01262 674524. Thanks to
Cindy, Scott, Hannah, and Joel and parent helpers Maggie and Linda for that
email, and good luck. It’s all for a wonderful cause and sounds like a very
good project, so hopefully they’ll get the help they need.

Dance

Just room in the letter to say good luck to the pupils of Miss Sara’s Dance
Studio for their annual show, it’s called “Dancing on The Sidewalk”, and it’s
on at the Middleton Hall on the Hull University campus this Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. Good Luck to them, and if you’re going along, enjoy.

Well that’s about it from me today, have a good day, and as always if you know
somebody who’d not signed up to the Levy Letter and you think they’d like one,
get them to go to www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull and click on Levy Letter and they
can sign up and start receiving their free daily Levy Letter from the very next
day.

Bye for now

Peter
