I have no part in any decision being made, but citing a phpbb forum as a reason for switching to a their own style is a bit like a pharmaceutical firm funding all the major studies supporting its drugs. There is a substantial component of "confirmation bias." One can always find something to support one's own opinion: <http://www.freelock.com/blog/john-locke/2010-03/mailing-list-or-forum-theory>.We will certainly find out what happens.

Maybe it is good to read the topic 'advantages over list-serv' (dating from 2007) on the phpBB communities forum:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=600139

I full agree with the final remark

"For low-traffic groups where everyone is interested in what everyone else has to say, a listserv is fine. But for more active and diverse communities a board (phpbb or otherwise) is a far better solution than a mailing list"
