Washington, 30 Jan (EFE). Encouraged by the highest popularity ratings ever achieved by a US President, George W. Bush has promised that the United States will defeat terrorism, and in the process overcome its economic crisis.

Brussels, 30 Jan (EFE). The European Commission has today decided to send its warning about excessive budgetary deficits to Germany and Portugal for the first time since the euro entry, European sources have said.

UN-AFGHANISTAN: UN expert says detainees are prisoners of war

Geneva, 30 Jan (EFE). The Special Rapporteur of the UN Commission on Human Rights, Kamal Hossain, has today, Wednesday, said that all the people detained in Afghanistan must be considered prisoners of war until a competent court gives a ruling on the matter.

EU-DEFENCE: Simitis announces Greece to present defence unblocking proposal

Brussels, 30 Jan (EFE). Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has today announced that he will soon present a proposal for unblocking the cooperation agreements with NATO, although he continues to oppose the attempt to �reproduce a situation in the EU similar to NATO�s.�

President of EU Council Josep Piqu� calls for Convention on future of Europe to be ambitious but realistic

The Spanish Foreign Minister said that "the prospect of an enlarged Union and the need to find a solution to the distance and incomprehension people feel in relation to the European Union justify speeding up the process of gradually constitutionalising the construction of Europe."
