EU-CHINA: EU and China to set up rapid alert system on product safety

Brussels, 31 Jan (EFE). The EU and China are developing a rapid alert system on imported product safety to avoid cases like last week�s, when Brussels banned several Chinese products of animal origin from entering the European Union. The Chinese Foreign Trade Minister, Shi Guangsheng, has announced this system at a press conference together with the EU Trade Commissioner, Pascal Lamy, who stressed that it is aimed at �avoiding chaotic procedures such as the ones we have at present.�

The President of the European Council, Jos� Mar�a Aznar, and the Foreign Minister of Chile, Soledad Alvear, have met in Madrid to speed up the negotiations on the Agreement on Political and Economic Association and Cooperation between Chile and the EU. The aim is for the signature of the Agreement to coincide with the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Summit to be held in Madrid on 17 and 18 May.

Luxembourg, 1 Feb (EFE). Inflation in the Eurozone stood at 2.5% in January 2002, according to the provisional estimate announced today by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat). This is the first estimate to have been made since the euro entered in circulation.
