Dear Stephen, the equivalent to music compression would lead to even more
debate, since it would give proof of deteriorating quality, as MP3 data
shows in sound quallity. The Fraunhoffer ( or however it is written)
compression factor of 10:1 for music data goes pretty close to a Jpeg
compression factor for a setting of 10-12 in Photoshop for large files.

Online libraries have to use jpeg ( note that still jpeg 2000 is still not
in general use) in order to facilitate fast downloads, However , most
Agencies still request that photographers send the original files in Tiff
format for their archives. They re-save in jpeg and transmit.

Just yesterday I got an urgent call from one of my clients. I have a large
library of his work that I have been shooting for him since last year.
He requested 10 specific files he is needing for an US architectural
magazine, for a big reportage about him and his work. Nice opportunity to
show my work !! I thought.

Case is, I have shot all of his work in jpeg ,since I knew he would not
ever need large prints at all. Well, fortunately I have 3 back ups of this
work, and I forcefully needed to retrieve files from the 3 sources in order
to be able to get the 10 files he requested, because in one disk ( Lacie)
some files were "corrupted" as reported by PS, some other files were
corrupted in a CD back up and then, thankfully, the third (CD) back up
provided what I could not retrieve from the 2 other sources and I was able
to complete the 10 files request, which I of course resaved as Tiffs.
I could be held accountable if I was not able to respond to him in a proper
way since he is paying me to keep his library.

To me , this promises to become a permanent headache, since I am never
confident of the real "health status" of my stored Jpeg files, until I try
to open them, and find out they are broken, and please note that I run the
back ups of the ORIGINAL , unprocessed data, on the same day, directly from
the data in the CF cards, just using different media.

THis has never happened to me in TIFF or PSD ( or RAW) formats and I can't
seem to find a proper explanation for this behaviour.
With the lowering prices of Hard Drives, I find no better option than
keeping my originals in RAW and produce whatever format I may need for each
given situation.
