I think "personal ownership of music" (for lack of a better expression) is here to stay. Look at vinyl, for example. It's more than a quick fad like the 90s revival. Sales have been improving for far too long now. I understand that streaming and such is big and will get bigger. The cloud is appealing not just to digital natives, but to people which aren't tech-saavy as well (it's easier to run an app than your own server). But I strongly believe that people which want to own their music will remain more than a niche. This is not gonna save Squeezebox, though. It will remain a niche because it's too complicated and technical. I actually believe the average consumer of multi-room audio is getting less tech-savvy. I don't necessarily believe the population as a whole is becoming less competent with regards to IT (even though one could debate it) but the thing is that the early adopters of multi-room audio where techies, whereas the majority adopters and laggards are non-techies). poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104714 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?
Chromecast Audio has a nice price, presumably because Google is setting the price based on a mixed calculation (you don't just generate revenue by purchasing the hardware, but also by using more Google services). IMO, the way to exploit the cheap hardware is by hacking it. Google Cast's strength is it's polish and ease-of-use. But I presume it lacks many of the advanced features I like about the Squeeze ecosystem. Does the Chromecast Audio, when used in conjunction with Squeeze2Upnp, support (i) tight synchronization, (ii) ReplayGain, (iii) gapless playback, etc.? If it doesn't, I don't find the device all that exciting. Although, you know what would be really cool? Besides, the Chromecasts are not really aesthetically pleasing. There's supposed to be hidden away. You can achieve the same with a Raspi + Vesa mount. As for pricing: Yeah, the Chromecasts are a little cheaper. But they offer less functionality. And you're only getting what Google wants. They tell you it's an open ecosystem but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Selected parts are open. Other parts force you to pay Google with your personal data. Usual answer: I also think Logitech somewhat misjudged the market. But, who cares? The system is open-source. I don't need Logitech hardware. In fact, I don't own a single Logitech device. The server runs just fine on my NAS. My Hifiberries were about a 100 each and deliver transparent sound quality. While not quite as versatile and audiophile, my setup is nicely complemented by software player running on my mobile devices. SB Player on my Android phone is perfect for listening on headphones in bed. But let me assure you that the Raspberry Pi is an entirely different beast. The Cubietruck sold in the thousands, whereas the Pi sold in the millions. The Pi has a huge community. For the Pi, solutions for non-experts exist which pretty much work out of the box. You don't need to solder. Assembly of a RPi 2 plus a Hifiberry takes a few minutes at the most. No tools required. And basically, you can order all required parts from one vendor. You spend roughly one hundred dollars/euros/GBPs for a fully-loaded, audiophile player. As for the software/OS side of things: Once again, let me assure you that even for a novice, setting up picoreplayer is easy as pie. picoreplayer is an awesome project. It's simple. It's rock-solid. alfista wrote: > Can you present a market analysis backing that? I think there are two developments which would make a market analysis interesting. First, the market exploded shortly after Logitech exited. Second, the products offered on the market changed. The first development is obvious. A lot more people want networked audio and companies like Sonos are doing well. You can quantify the size of the market by looking at sales volumes. The second development is that the variety of networked audio systems available has increased and some solutions out there are pretty mature. Also, I'd argue that the systems which focus on streaming (as opposed to local content in a client-server model) have been able to catch up as streaming services have become ubiquitous. Thus, the competition is fiercer than back in the day, making a re-entry by Logitech less profitable. I'm not sure which development dominates. In some sense, the two developments are also intertwined. In a larger market, more niche products tend to survive. So maybe has enough of a unique product to succeed. It's also interesting to see that other firms still find it worthwhile to enter the market. E.g., look at LG which just came out which a bunch of Google Cast for Audio networked speakers. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103588 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Full scans are necessary infrequently anyway. Instead, if all you did was adding a few albums to your collection which you want to listen to right away, all that's required is an update scans. The chance that a drive dies within the next minute is not much different for a two-year old drive than for a brand-new drive. Even after four or five years of usage, HDD failure rates increase only modestly. Backup is essential. Replacement of perfectly good drives is not a backup strategy. It's also not a strategy to guarantee uptime (once again, failure rates of brand-new HDDs aren't that much lower). Besides, replacement of HDDs will not protect you against user errors (e.g., accidental deletions of data), malware, or the like. If you need 24/7 uptime, go for a RAID (replace drives when they fail or when it's time to upgrade the entire RAID). But RAID is no backup, either. (Computer) speakers are part of Logitech's core business, too. And recall that Logitech got big through *wireless* keyboards and mice. Squeezeboxes are wireless audio products. As such, they fit reasonably well in Logitech's product portfolio. Anyways, I think that nowadays, people want two features in a speaker. First, they want it to be portable so that you put it in the kitchen or on the balcony without hassle. Second, they want it to be networked. Of course, bluetooth/smartphone connectivity is a biggie. But again, sync and uPnP-style stuff is really taking off, too. Not just Sonos, but almost every big player -- Pio, Sony, Denon, you name it -- is in that game by now. And wireless speakers are becoming more similar to off-the-shelf items like computer mice. I suppose the UE Boom line is going well for them but I bet they're losing revenues with a lot of their other audio-related products. I think right now, an active speaker with Squeezebox-like functionality would make a lot of sense for them. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102809 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

And even ultrabook processors (Haswell or Broadwell microarchitecture) like the i3-4005U are interesting options. You get massively more performance than with ARM. But their power consumption is quite low. E.g., the aforementioned i3-4005U has 15 W TDP but uses far less (more like 5 W) in real life. And Broadwell reduces power consumption even more. So I'm really contemplating putting my LMS on a Broadwell-based Intel NUC. They are expected to become available by the end of February. I prefer to put my data on a NAS, though. It gives me redundancy, comfortable backup solutions, and a stable, secure platform that's heavily optimized towards file storage and file server needs. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103069 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

So, generally speaking, I think you get more bang for your buck by going the Atom route rather than the AMD Fusion/Ontario route. But yeah, I think this system would be powerful enough for your purposes. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103069 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

cliveb wrote: > > It's just that if there happens to be a suitable mobo still available, > my thrifty nature is not to chuck out a load of still functioning stuff. I think this equipment is beyond the point where it's thrifty to do repairs. Basically, the likelihood that a given integrated circuit dies within a given time frame increases with the amount of heat it has been exposed to in the past. So, I wouldn't be surprised if your CPU dies soon. Or your RAM. And you're starting to pay premium prices for this old legacy hardware (e.g., importing one of the mobos mentioned by Apesbrain to the UK will cost about GBP 25 in shipping plus GBP 13 in taxes and import duties). Same goes for your IDE hard disks. One of them will have a head crash sooner or later. Then you'll have to spend extra time searching for a suitable replacement. Why not get a new system with a new hard drive? A 1 TB 3.5" hard drive costs about GBP 40. IMO, it's just not economical anymore to repair that system. Or, if there is an economical way, it involves scoring used parts off ebay at a bargain price. That way, when the next part dies, you have less to regret. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Using XP on any system that isn't fully isolated from outside interference (e.g., internet, removable storage media) is HORRIBLE security practice. Basically, there are very few scenarios where continued use of XP is justified. Essentially, it's justified for companies which buy Microsoft's expensive custom support plan or for medical or military computers with tightly regulated data access. Chances are there's already malware on your system. I strongly advise you run OFFLINE scans (where the scanner boots from CD or a USB stick) several times a week. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Go with the times, man. XP is a horrible idea. Support has ended. Security holes are not being fixed. Virus scanners and browsers will stop supporting it relatively soon. A new one will be much more efficient (considering how old your equipment seems to be) and will pay for itself over its lifetime through energy consumption saved. Besides, your current PSU may lack the appropriate connectors for a modern mobo and CPU. Mobos with PCI ports still exist but I know of none which provide IDE. You can still get IDE via a PCI (or pci-e) card. Honestly, I'd ditch the IDE drives, too, for performance, reliability, and compatibility reasons. If you stick to your legacy hardware, you'll limit your options a lot (e.g., lack of available hardware, lack of drivers for modern OSes). poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For me, a lot of that USB DAC stuff is audiophile voodoo. I know I can buy a transparent DAC for a one-digit euro or dollar amount. I prefer cheap and compact solutions which often aren't USB-based (i.e., I prefer utilizing on-board stuff such as built-in HDMI outs or small internal extension cards). Although, I know many people successfully integrate USB DACs so I think your point is a bit moot anyway. > > I am also discouraged that pretty much all of the proprietary music > server systems > Me, too. Perhaps companies think it's easier to generate profits from proprietary systems. The software in the Squeezebox ecosystem is free and open source. Capable, cheap, and relatively open hardware is widely available. So you cannot lock people into your brand's products like Apple and Sonos can. --- For me, one important thing hampering the adoption of LMS is that it's not really plug-and-play. Since Logitech stopped production, you cannot simply get up and running in 10-15 minutes anymore. That's different from competing solutions where you basically hook up a stand-alone speaker or small black set-top box you bought at Best Buy or Amazon and blast away. For many people, DIY squeezebox is way too technical. I recently set up a system for a friend. I'm almost regretting it now. I had to do all the work. Furthermore, he lacks the IT expertise to properly carry out administrative changes to LMS or the clients. Whenever there's a little problem, I'm now getting IMs or calls. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102809 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Android controller apps
Wrong forum? Would have been more sensible to post this in 3rd party software if you ask me. In my opinion, the Logitech app is slow (sometimes almost unresponsive) and limited in functionality (it doesn't integrate nicely with some of the plugins). Some other controller apps are prettier. The Logitech app hasn't been updated in quite some time - thus, the current release hasn't been tested against recent versions of Android. I like Orange Squeeze. Its GUI feels snappy. The album art display looks good. Overall, it's been running smoothly for me although I currently am affected by a bug in the latest version. Squeezer is a FOSS option. I've tested early builds. There was much to like, but the app didn't seem 100% stable and solid to me. But it's an app to watch. poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102791 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!
I am having issues with the latest stable release of Orange Squeeze (2.0.14). Occasionally, when I start Orange Squeeze, it cannot connect to my LMS (version 7.7.3). When I then try to manually select the server (it is pinned so I can select it), it gives me a popup saying something like "waiting for internet connection to be restored. check that you're not in airplane mode." However, I am connected to the local network as well as to the internet. Via the same device's browser, I can access the web interface of my LMS just fine. The device is a Nexus 7 2013. Could it be that Orange Squeeze isn't fully compatible yet with Android 5.0.1? poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
