Links in Thunderbird and sending email from IE [was "Re: <>"]

Using a subject line might help get your questions noticed by the right 
people.


The settings to send email with Thunderbird in IE will be found in IE 
and Not Thunderbird. Go into your IE settings and look for applications. 
You should be able to set Thunderbird as your email client in IE. Sorry 
I can't be of more help, but I'm not running Windows at the moment.

Are you talking about a desktop system or a laptop? Any desktop system 
should have empty PCIE slots and open USB ports, so you should be fine. 
If you're talking about a laptop, I think you can get pretty good USB 
sound cards, so that shouldn't be a problem. There are a few brands of 
laptops that have paired up with audio companies, so I'd assume they'd 
have pretty good built in sound cards. HP has a laptop with their Beets 
system. Good luck.

the bit rate of the output file or even use a lossless format, so what 
is it about imtoo dvd audio ripper that results in higher quality output?

Is Dvd Audio Extractor really the best program for extracting audio from
Dvd videos? Enquiring as I am considering purchasing the program, but not
without exploring other avenues first. For example I am trying BitRipper.
While it can rip audio tracks only, it would appear that it can only do
one track at a time judging by a combo box. With Dvd Audio Extractor I can

I would agree. I've tried other programs, but they all require you to 
know a bit about the files on your DVD. Sometimes extracting the audio 
from the right file can be a bit hit or miss. DVD Audio Extractor takes 
any guess work out of it.

Any ripper or audio conversion tool should be able to do this. I've done 
it with iTunes recently. In the past, I've done it with CDex and Switch. 
I'm also pretty sure you could do it with Winamp and Windows Media Player.

I'm just guessing at who you're directing this to and what you're 
talking about, since you didn't include the message you're replying to, 
but I suspect you're right, although it seems like there are more 
variables involved with the play back and recording devices then there 
is with just one piece of software that will be working directly with 
the bits.

I'm just guessing, so feel free to ignore me, but can you play the AAC 
files in other media players? Have you played other AAC file in Winamp? 
I'm just wondering if you need a plugin or something to play .ogg files

Surely m4v files are video format? Why would you try to convert a
video format to audio format

I convert video files to audio files all the time. The resulting audio 
files take up a fraction of the space of the original video files. Plus, 
although it's probably not an issue in this case, the audio files are 
much more portable and can be played on many more devices. Converting 
files also takes a fraction of the time and results in better quality 
than playing the video file and recording it in real time.


I haven't used MrV files before, but if I were to work with them on 
Windows, I'd check out Switch before anything else.

WMV is a proprietary MS format, so you may have trouble playing it on 
Apple devices.

First you must get the URL of the Youtube video you want. I have five
e-mails which each has one link to a video. I used the append to
clipboard to have all five links on my clipboard. If you are not
comfortable with this or don't know how to do this, you could open a
text editor and copy and paste each URL into the text editor. Here are

links into the program.

Hit alt

arrow over to convert menu

Down arrow to the format you want to save the file in. If you only
want the audio arrow down to mp3. If you want the video then choose
one of the video formats in the menu.

I have chosen mp3 so that is what I entered on in the convert menu

A dialog will come up. the first thing you hear is mp3 output parameters

Tab once and you will find a combo box and it will say custom.

Tab again and there is a button to create a preset. If you like to use
presets you can go through the dialog for each preset you wish to
create. but I don't use presets. I just edit the custom preset that is
there.

So I tab one more time to edit preset

Another dialog will open and you will hear mp3 preset editor

Tab once and you will hear custom which is what I use so tab again

Here is a combo box to choose the bit rate of your file. You can up
and down arrow through the combo box to find the bit rate you would
like. Youtube videos aren't usually that great so you don't need a
high bit rate. I will set mine at 128 kbps

Tab again and you can choose but I usually leave this at 44,100 hz

Tab again and there is a combo box where you can choose between mono
and stereo by arrowing up and down

the next time you tab jaws doesn't say anything so I don't know if
anything is there or not so tab once more to the OK button and hit enter.

You will end back at your original dialog at edit preset.

Tab again and there is a button to delete a preset so tab again

The next two tabs jaws speaks nothing so I don't know if anything is
there or not.

Tab to the button that says ... and hit enter

Another dialog will open up. This is a tree view just like My Computer
or Windows Explorer. so arrow through the tree view to find a folder
you would like your mp3 to end up in.

Once you have chosen a folder tab twice to the OK button and hit enter.

You will be returned to the top of the original dialog.

Tab all the way through the dialog. If you would like your files to
show up in iTunes then check the checkbox near the end of the dialog.
Check the box by hitting the spacebar.

Tab to the convert button and hit enter.

The program will let you know the percentage of the work that has been
done. When it is through a window will come up that says success. Hit
alt + f4 to close this window.

Tab to the program and it will also let you know the work is finished.
Hit alt + f4 to get back to the program.

a Windows PC and a Mac are stretching the list topic, since it seems 
pretty on topic to me, but asking about an OCR application on a Mac

I'd use one of the cloud services. I know Ubuntu One has a client for 
both Mac and Windows, but I would assume Drop Box does as well.

Yes, I agree. You might be able to find some other converter that will
convert M4A files into another format, but then you run the risk of
introducing some new artefacts. Best if you can go to the source and
just specify another format.

mark here, but couldn't you use sound Taxi to convert to another format?
I used to use Sound Taxi to convert my .wma files into .mp3 files that I
could play on my MP3 players that don't support MS's proprietary format.

I thought they were the same, i.e. M4A is just an Apple proprietary
wrapper around the open AAC format. I'd have to look it up myself as well.

It's been a while since I've done it, but I'm pretty sure the NLS player
will find MP3 files in any folder. You don't need to sue a special
folder name for your MP3 files. The FAQ at
http://www.azlibrary.gov/braille/faq.aspx doesn't list any special
folder name, but the web site at
http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/tbbl/bard/bookshelf.htm does say you should
use the folder name audio+podcasts.

Since a RAR file is already compressed, I doubt you'll get much more out
of the compression, but you could check the settings used in the
application you used to generate the RAR file. Sometimes you can trade
off time against the amount of compression. If you didn't create the RAR
file yourself, you can try running it through another compression
application, but as I said, I wouldn't be optimistic that you'd be able
to compress it by another 3x.

I don't think this is going to work on your iPhone. The NFL's AudioPass
requires flash, and I believe FieldPass does as well. There is no flash
support in the iPhone or any mobile device that I'm aware of. The NFL
also has an exclusive deal with Verizon, so if you have your iPhone
through Verizon, you may be able to use their app, but I don't know how
accessible it is.

Agreed, and I'd assume you can still install Winamp with the installer
from the Winamp site and just use the installers dialog boxes to keep
the tool bar from being installed. It's been a while since I've
installed Winamp myself, so I don't have personal and recent experience.

FS just used the name MS uses for this type of control. Visually, the
button is split in half, if you click on the left hand side, or use the
space or enter bar, then the default action will be executed. If you
click on the right hand side of the button or use the right arrow key
then the submenu will come up. Neither drop down or closed seem like
they'd capture the dual nature of this button.

Yes, among other things. Tag data can include album name, song title,
track number, artist, genre year and so on. It allows you're media
player to list and organize your music in multiple ways.

I haven't pulled up Sound Taxi with JFW 13, but I did use it with
earlier versions of JAWS. It required a little bit of JAWS cursoring,
but it was pretty straight forward. Also, once it's set up, it's pretty
much hands free. For example, when I brought up Sound Taxi, it would
default to the right directories, load the files in the source
directory, and all I'd have to do is just hit the convert button.

You definitely need to log into Pandora with Hope. If you're not being
prompted, that's probably because Hope remembers your log in
information. If this is a new install of Hope then you will need to log
into Pandora at least once or create a new account. If you're trying to
use the same account information, such as the same user ID, then it will
fail. As you said, try going to the Pandora page to retrieve the log in
information or try to register with a different account name.

Googling for "aiff file extension" yields the fact that WMP and most
media players should handle AIFF files. I also checked and Switch from
www.nch.com should be able to convert it to MP3, but probably a lot of
other conversion utilities (including on-line services) should also be
able to do this.

Well, that blows my theory. I think memory is also a key factor,
especially with Windows XP systems. I had a significantly noticeable
performance improvement when I bumped my system up to 4G from 2G. I
think the combination of what I was running, Windows XP, JAWS, Switch,
SoundTaxi  and so on was really struggling running in a 2G footprint.

I don't think Device Manager was lying to you. I believe Device Manager
checks your local hard drive, any removable drives you have loaded (such
as a manufacturers CD) and the MS update repository for device drivers.
If you haven't downloaded a newer device driver and RealTek hasn't
uploaded one to MS then I don't think Device Manager will find it. For
example, it doesn't check the RealTek web site. There are other 3rd
party applications that will do this for you.

NLS USB drive set up [was "Re: Seem to have lost my touch"]

I'm not sure if you get any additional features using the audio+podcasts
folder, but I've always found the NLS player finds all of my MP3 files
regardless of what folders they're located in. For example, I used to
use the same folder structure I have on my Booksense, and the NLS player
didn't seem to have any trouble finding of my MP3 files.

Note I went ahead and changed the subject line, since I didn't
understand what the previous subject line had to do with this question.

I don't have access to my Windows machine where I have Winamp installed,
but I think you have to be using the right output device in Winamp to
have the volume of Winamp be separate from your screen reader volume.
Try a different output device in Winamp to see what happens. I'm not
sure what the original problem was though, since I don't see the full

My experience with the library, over multiple generations of Winamp, is
that the library is accessible for the local media and things like
managing your podcasts. It isn't accessible when it comes to managing
other remote content, such as radio feeds and the like.

I think it's perfectly OK for someone to provide an answer without
necessarily providing the link. Not every utility I have on my system
has an easy way to grab the link from where I found that utility. I
assume the person asking the question can use Google just as much as I
can. If after looking for it, they're having some trouble finding it,
then I may be able to help out. Of course, if I have the link handy,
I'll also send it along, but I don't see anything wrong with this
answer. None of us are paid to provide customer support on these lists.
If you don't like an answer then use the delete key.

I haven't been following this thread, but it seems to me like people are
just trying to help. Did you explain in your original question that you
tried all of these different options? I can't tell since you didn't
include the whole thread below. Seems to me like it would be more
effective if you just politely mentioned that you tried these options
and you really are just looking to do this with TR. Maybe it's just me,
but I'm not sure I'd be too interested in providing the answer after a
message like this. After all, I'm not paid to provide customer support
on this list. I'm guessing I'll get flamed for this, but I'm just making
some suggestions on how best to get your question answered.

Re: Ripping CDs With CDEX: How Do You Tell CDEX to include Title And Artist In Track Listing?

I assume it's in the help files for CDex, but I think you just need to
go into the CDDB tab of the CDex preferences, which I think you can get
to with F4, specify an email address (note it just has to follow the
email address format and doesn't have to be a real email address) and
then choose either freedb.org or cddb.com for your track info database.
Note that I didn't feel like going downstairs and firing up my Windows
desktop just to look up this information, so I'm going from memory and
what I was able to Google. I hope this proves useful!

The problem is that I very seldom boot my Windows PC anymore, but going
from memory, I think you should be able to click on the library view and
then view by artist or album to look for those stray tracks. Note that
you can also use other media players like Winamp or FooBar to look
through your library, if those interfaces are easier to use. Even
Windows Explorer should do the trick.

I need to do some ripping on my Windows PC anyway, so I'll take a look
and see if I can offer up any better tips than that.

Have you looked around for those tracks? Is it possible they ended up
getting loaded in the library under another artist or album? I've had
this happen to me with different CD rippers, and I usually just edit the
MP3 tags myself to straighten it out.

Yeh, that agrees with my experience with last.fm. If I want to listen to
some classic rock, I might create a station for Queen, and I'll hear
Queen plus music from related bands. I also find that last.fm seems to
do a pretty good job of picking related artists.

Well, I'm sure I'm not one of the Christopher's Adrian is referring to,
but I'm sure I'm in that illustrious class of Christopher's Dane is
talking about. Hopefully, he's not really discriminating against
everyone named Christopher just because of his feelings towards me.

I don't feel myself to be a pretend list cop. I've merely pointed out
what is clearly stated in the info for this list and provided my
opinions, with explanations, on where I think this list should go. I've
provided links to other sources of information and other lists, when
I've known about them, and when I thought someone could get more
accurate and timely information elsewhere. I worked hard to make my
statements tactful and polite and free from rudeness or criticism. I've
tried to be nothing but supportive of the moderator and even help out
where I could. In fact, I think both Tom's and Steve's messages were in
support of my statements and efforts, although maybe I misread those
messages, but I suspect it's rather a case of we're all in more
agreement with one another than maybe we realize.

I also think Dane is being a bit hypocritical in this situation. Several
times he's made bold and unequivocal statements on what is and isn't on
topic for this list, which smacks of wanting to be a moderator to me.
He's complained that others are rude and making the INTERNET a less
friendly place, and yet he posts a message like the one below.

IMHO, I think we should move on and let Tom's statement speak for
itself. We all seem to be in agreement that it's Tom's list to moderate
as he sees fit.

Ah, I'm not trying to moderate this list! IMHO, the moderator already
does a great job. That is one job I don't want, and I'm fine with
letting someone else do it! :-)

I'm also perfectly fine with abiding by his decisions. All I meant to do
below is point out what he specified when he set up this list and what I
personally thought that meant with respect to his intent for this list.
I'm not sure how many people look at the info page for a given list or
the introductory message they get when they sign up for a list before
they start figuring out what is and isn't on topic or what is and isn't
appropriate for the list. On some lists, you used to see periodic
reminders of the lists guidelines, but that practice seems to have
fallen by the way side, since I don't think I've seen that practiced
much lately.

Even with a clear statement on what's on and off topic for a list,
things are still open to interpretation, which is why I think it's
important to occasionally get a decision from the moderator on some of
the Grey topics. I have my own opinions on where to set the boundaries
for this list, and I gave them below, along with my reasons, but as I
said, I'm perfectly OK with whatever the moderator decides, and you
won't see me questioning his decision or arguing with him on this list.
This is his list, and I'm just trying to be respectful to his intentions
and the time and commitment he makes to setting up and moderating this list.

I read this to mean that portable MP3 players (which are not PC's) are
not on topic for this list. I'll further point out the following:
* There are quite a few lists already for different portable media
players that get far more traffic than this list, so I would encourage
the moderator to not allow the discussion of portable media players on
this list. We could easily be swamped by discussions on iPods and
iPhones. I've already left several lists since I don't have a device
from Apple yet, and I don't have time to wade through all of the
discussion on those products.
* If the original question were posed to a Humanware or Victor Stream
list, it seems like the question would have been answered much more
quickly and efficiently.

Stereo to mono when adjusting playback speed {was "Re: re question"]

This is the same behavior with the DTBM from NLS and the Booksense, i.e.
once you adjust the playback speed, you hear mono instead of stereo.

Just curious, but wouldn't this be off topic for this list? I'd suggest
a better list, but I don't have a Victor Stream, and the generic MP3
player list I was on switched over to focusing on iPods.

Also, I'd suggest a more descriptive subject line. Depending on what I'm
using to check my messages, I don't always open them up if the subject
doesn't catch my eye. Note that I did change it myself with this message.

My experience with USB sound cars has been limited but positive. I would
think you'd want to send your screen reader through the built in sound
chip and stream your music out of the USB sound card. My understanding
is that the built in sound chips are pretty low end, especially in
netbooks, and your USB sound card will almost certainly be a better
quality sound card.

INTERNET has become? I guess this is another case in point.

I agree that people can refer to the list archive more often or even
just use Google to find things out on their own, but I think people can
be encouraged to do this without posting such a rude and pointless
message to the entire list. For example, Georgen could be new to the
list and wasn't aware of the fact that this has been discussed recently.
The location to the list archive could have been pointed out.
Unfortunately, not everyone keeps the introductory messages they get
when they subscribe to a list or can figure out where the list archive
is or how to search it on their own.

I hope Georgen and others aren't dissuaded from posting perfectly
legitimate questions to the list.

BTW, I did see the smile at the end of the message, but slapping 7
characters on at the end of a mean spirited message doesn't make it OK.

According to the web page
http://www.soundtaxi.org/soundtaxi_audio_conversion_Audible.php this is
supported. I'm not saying it doesn't violate your terms of condition
with Audible, but at least according to the Sound Taxi web site, this is
technically possible. I also noticed that Quicktime is a prerequisite
for Sound Taxi, so this also lends some credibility to that statement.

To test it, you can download Sound Taxi for free and use it in trial
mode. It's fully functional, but it'll only convert a few minutes of
audio. This is enough to see if it's going to work or not.

The Platinum version costs $20, but I'd suggest upgrading to the pro
version for $27. It's only $7 more, and the performance makes it worth
the price if you're going to be using Sound Taxi to convert more than
just a handful of files.

When you say you want to supply tags from directory file names, do you
mean you want to populate the tags based on the directory the file is in
and it's file name? I've used both WMP and Winamp to do this in the past.

Yeh, I tried to switch and start ripping to OGG, it being open source
and all, but I had some trouble with the sound quality of some files
where I was extracting the audio from a video. I guess I was running
into some artifacts converting from one lossy format to another. I'm
guessing some of those video formats are just containers for MP3 audio.
I didn't investigate this much and ended up just going back to MP3 as my
default.

I rip to MP3, and I use something less than a 320K bit rate, so I don't
think you're insane, but it depends on what you'll be doing with these
ripped files. For my part, I'm not an audiophile and I'm not going to be
playing these on a high fidelity system, so I make some allowances for
speed and convenience.

If I had the ears that I had when I was younger, and I had the time and
the space, then I'd be considering EAC and FLAC myself.

IMHO, you're not insane for going with what makes sense for your situation.

I didn't see anything on Audible's purchase conditions about needing to
continue to have an active account with Audible. I'm sure the media
player needs to check that your license is valid, but I too would be
surprised if it's actually checking that you have an active account with
Audible. Your Audible ready portable media players are obviously not all
going to be able to do this. Your PC, laptop, netbook, ..., may not
always have access to the network either. I'd assume you could still
listen to your book or other Audible purchase though.

You are allowed to make one copy to a CD or other tangible media. You're
also encouraged to back your purchases up. The purchase terms also say
your license exists as long as you have a copy of the material, although
there's some legalese wrapped around this statement.

terms and conditions of the site where you're purchasing your books,
Audible in this case. Does Audible allow you to burn their books to a CD
or copy them to an MP3 player? I'm not sure about Audible's terms and
conditions or how they enforce their DRM strategy, but I would assume
you can still listen to your Audible books even after you leave Audible.

I don't see the message you're referring to, but obviously, once you
purchase something you can't do whatever you want with it. I can not buy
a CD and then start reproducing it at will to either give it away or to
resell. I couldn't do the same thing with a book either.

There is the fair use concept in the US legal system, where you're
allowed to make backups or copies of a CD, VCR or the like for your own
personal use, but Audible is allowed to ask you to waive this right to
use their services. Bottom line, regardless of what you think, you are
bound by the terms and conditions of the agreements you enter into.

Converting Audible to MP3 [was "Re: audible"]

I assume these are DRM protected correct? If so, I used to use a program
called Sound Taxi when I converted DRM WMA books from Overdrive.com. I
assume it would work with Audible as well though. It is not a free
program though. The original setup required some use of the JAWS cursor,
but once it was set up, it was pretty much automatic.

If these aren't DRM protected then I used to use a program called Switch
from NCH. The free version of this program took care of all of my audio
conversion needs.

It's been a while since I've ripped a CD, but I had switched from CDex
to WMP. I just started having the occasional problem where CDex wouldn't
rip a CD or wouldn't retrieve the proper metatags, and I would use WMP
in those cases, so I just switched to WMP altogether. It was accessible
when I used it, free and probably already on your system. It doesn't
have the options as some other CD rippers, but it did what I wanted it
to. That's just another option for you.

I've used CDex and Windows Media Player to rip CD's.

The file format you'll use depends on what you mean by best sound and
best format. If you don't care about the size of the file or how long
it'll take to rip or how long it'll take to copy to a MP3 player and you
have the ears and the sound equipment to hear the difference then you
would want to go with a lossless format like WAV or FLAC. There's also a
lossless form of WMA, and I would assume there's a lossless form of AAC
as well. BTW, you'd also want to make sure your MP3 player will support
these formats.

If you're willing to give up some quality for size and portability then
you'd want to consider a lossy format like OGG, MP3, WMA, AAC and so on.
Again, you'll need to figure out what formats your MP3 players will
support. MP3's are ubiquitous but may not give you the sound quality you
want or the level of compression you're looking for. CDex has an insane
setting when ripping and this will give you the best quality with a
lossy format assuming again you don't care about the size of the file
and you'll be able to hear the difference. I'm not sure exactly how all
other CD rippers work, but there's usually a setting or preferences
option somewhere with a slider that will let you set the bit rate and
other options that will effect sound quality.

I'm not an audiophile, and my ears aren't good enough to hear the subtle
differences in these file formats, so I usually just stick with MP3's.
this also gives me the added benefit that they can be played anywhere.I
also don't use the 320 bit rate any more, but I'm not sure exactly what
I use these days.

I'd suggest trying a few options to see what you like and then trading
that off against the size of the files and the MP3 player you'll be
using. If I were an audiophile and I didn't care about time or disk
space, I'd do something like rip all of my CD's in FLAC and then convert
them to OGG as I copied them out to my MP3 player. I could then twiddle
with the bit rate to get the quality of music and the number of files I
wanted on my MP3 player.

I'm not sure I see the arrogance you do. It looks to me like we just
have two sides of an issue. Both sides seem to be stating their case
with equal certitude, so if there's any arrogance it's on both sides. I
also don't understand the reference to RAR files. I sort of recall
someone thinking RAR files were a compressed file format, so I can see
where they'd think asking about them would be on topic for this list,
but as I recall, it was explained in just a message or two what was
going on and how to deal with them. I don't recall anyone arguing that
discussing archive formats was on topic for this list. Even so, I don't
think one off topic posting means everything is on topic.

For my part, this is clearly off topic for this list, but obviously it's
ultimately up to Tom to decide. If any topic related to cell phones or
screen readers was on topic for this list then we'd quickly be
overwhelmed. I think this is evident given how many lists there are
dedicated to screen readers and cell phones. In fact, whether this is on
topic for this list or not, a list dedicated to cell phone access would
 be a more efficient way to get you the information you're looking for,
as a previous message from Dane will demonstrate.

compete with the iPhone. Look at the specifications of the Galaxy line
of phones and how many devices are out there running Android versus IOS,
and you might find that it's the other way around.

7. I'm guessing he's getting tripped up by the directory changes from

These are called ID3 tags. One place where you can read up on them is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3#Editing_ID3_tags

Usually your CD ripper will connect to a DB and prepopulate your ID3
tags for you. What CD ripper are you using?

Also, media library applications, like Winamp and Windows Media Player
will let you edit your ID3 tags and even make global changes. I know you
can have your music stored in files and folders based on the ID3 tags,
but I'm not sure you can go the other way, such as update your ID3 tags
based on the folders and files where your music is stored. I know they
can use this data to populate empty ID3 tags, so maybe you can do what
you want with one of these applications.

If you're using Windows, you can edit your ID3 tabs through Windows
Explorer. Just use alt+enter to bring up the properties view and
control+tab over to the tab that has your ID3 tags. In addition to
Winamp and Windows Media Player, there are other applications you can
use to make global changes to your ID3 tags. For example, in Ubuntu, I
use a tool called EasyTag.

Subject lines [was "Re: Taking The Punt On A New Device"]

Well, IMHO you use bad subject lines at your own risk. Depending on
which mail client I use, I'll sometimes only use the subject line to
determine if I'm going to read the message or just delete it. Others on
the list have said the same thing and the description of the list is
pretty clear that using good subject lines and changing the subject line
when the thread changes is expected. If you want some help or you want a
question answered then it's in your best interest to make the subject
line as meaningful as possible.

I don't think the RAR example is a good one since I think the originator
was confused and didn't realize that the RAR file type indicated a
archive and not a compressed audio format. Maybe that subject line
should have been changed, but since the subsequent responses had to do
with which tools to use to unpack the RAR file, I'm not so sure that was
necessary, although I have to admit, I don't remember the subject line
anymore.

Besides, just because someone else chooses to use a poor subject line
doesn't mean that it's then OK for everyone else to do it! Instead of
perpetuating a mistake, you could set an example instead! :-)

Re: TV on computer list, unsuccessful

I'll let Jianluca answer for himself, but as he says in his email he
uses the software that comes with his USB TV tuner card from Hauppauge.
He says this software is accessible.

I did something a few years ago, using the software that came with a TV
tuner card I got cheap. I think the software was PVR by KWorld. I don't
recall the manufacturer of the TV tuner card, but like I said, this was
a few years ago, so I'm sure neither the TV tuner card or the software
is still around. I just use this as an example that there may be other
software out there besides Windows Media Center that let's you control
and record from your TV tuner card.

files, and I assume you can find it at: http://www.izarc.org/

According to this web site:

IZArc is the best way to extract zip, rar and many other archives for free

Note that I don't use IZARC myself, but if I still used Windows, I'd
give it a look. It sounds pretty good! I found the above web site with
Google. Further note that it's spelled with a 'Z' and not an 'S',
although Google got to the same web page with either spelling.

I don't think Windows XP has anything built into it that can handle RAR
files. You can create and uncompress ZIP files through Windows manager,
just check out the File pull down, but not RAR files. I think this is
also true with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I'm not sure about that.

I would think graphics cards are pretty clearly on topic, although I can
see where you might get so specific and so deep that the discussion
would only be of interest to a few people.

I would also think that accessing your cable companies DVR or streams
from your PC would also be on topic, but I could see where you could
easily get into the merits of one cable company over the other, which
would clearly be off topic.

BTW, I applaud your sensitivity to keeping discussions on topic!

Are you saying Tom, that 5 people left the list specifically because of
the cable TV thread? I'm kind of surprised someone would leave the list
for a thread I didn't even realize was going on. I guess people have
different levels of sensitivity. I also wonder how interested those
people were in the list to begin with if they left because of one thread
which may have strayed off topic.

BTW, here's the information I got when I subscribed to the list as far
as what the list is for. I just offer this for informational purposes. I

RAR files are archive files, like ZIP files, so you don't convert them,
you unpack them. I'd recommend 7-Zip from: http://www.7-zip.org/

Last I knew, which wasn't that long ago, 7-Zip was free, accessible and
supported RAR files.

I must have missed something, but from looking at the thread below, I
don't understand what's going on here. What's the deal with the email
addresses? Is there a reason they can't be grabbed from the email

Also, is there a reason this discussion is going off list? Is another
list specifically for TV on the PC going to be set up? If so, why not
just create it and have people subscribe to it?

So it sounds like you want to get music from your CD's onto your PC.
After that, you want to transfer that music to your portable players.
Would these portable players be things like MP3 players? Do they involve
CD's at all?

I think you want to rip your CD's, It doesn't sound like you want to do
any burning. Windows Media Player will rip the music from your CD's and
then place it onto your PC. It'll also let you update portable media
players. You don't need Windows Explorer for any of this. Other
applications, such as Winamp, iTunes and so on will do the same thing.
You can also use a ripper like CDex to get the music from the CD onto
your PC. Depending on the MP3 player, you may be able to use Windows
Explorer to copy music files to your MP3 player. This assumes that it
shows up as a removable drive when you plug it in.

Have you gone in and set up your hot keys in FooBar yet? Here's a post

how to set up hot keys in FooBar. It's a bit tedious, but if you take

It's been a while since I ripped a CD, and I don't think I ever did it
in Windows 7, but I ended up just using Windows Media Player. It's free,
ubiquitous and I didn't find it that difficult to figure out, but that's
a relative term and WMP does take some getting used to.

Coincidentally enough, I just saw Able Planet EXTREME Foldable Noise 
Canceling Headphones with Free Microphone on sellout.woot.com for $40. I 
just bought this combination a few weeks ago, and I'm quite pleased.


You can use the headphones by themselves by just plugging them into your 
3.5mm audio output jack.


You also get a microphone that you plug into the 3.5mm jack on your 
headphones. A cable runs from the microphone, and has a 3.5mm UHJ 
connector that you can plug directly into your iPhone. It also comes 
with a 2.5mm UHJ adapter, which I use when I use it with my cordless 
phone or my E71X cell phone. Finally, it comes with a splitter so you 
can plug it into a pair of 3.5mm speaker/microphone jacks.


The microphone plugs into the base of the left ear cup, and has a boom 
that rotates in two directions. The cable has a mute button, a volume 
control and the button that lets you answer incoming phone calls.


I bought a pair of Able Electronics headphones a while ago. I use the 
microphone with both the foldable headphones that come with this deal as 
well as the non-foldable pair I bought months ago. The headphones are 
quite comfortable and the noise cancelling and noise isolation is quite 
good.

Are you changing topics because I don't understand the question. With a
TV tuner card connected to your PC, you would change channels using some
media software on your PC. I think Windows Meda Center has been
mentioned on this list, but there are other options, such as Beyond TV.
I'm not sure anymore what the accessible options are.

I'm not sure what the options are with respect to controlling your set
top box, satellite box or cable box from your PC.

Winamp is very accessible, but it isn't very standard. What screen
reader are you using? If you're using JAWS, I'd recommend going into the
JAWS documentation and reading up on Winamp. It'll include hot keys,
tips and so on.

I've just unchecked Winamp Agent because it's just another process I
don't think I need running on my PC. I don't install enough media
players, and I'm careful when I do, so I don't worry about my file
associations getting taken over. That being said, it's a good precaution
for anyone who is worried about it or has had a bad experience with
losing their file associations. I haven't run it in a while, but I don't
think there's an accessibility issue with JAWS. I'd be curious to know
where FS recommends not running Winamp Agent.

There's another utility called Winamp Remote, or something like that,
which as I recall is not accessible and can get in your way of your
winamp experience. It has something to do with controling winamp
remotely. I've always unchecked this option.

Winamp has a nice feature of remembering your settings from your
previous install, and there's an option somewhere where you just tell it
to install Winamp the same way you did before. This is nice because you
don't have to worry about remembering which buttons to check and
unchecked. Unfortunately, because of this, I can't recall which options
I frequently unchecked!

What are you looking for in a media player? I like Winamp because I can
manage my local libraries, my portable media players and my podcasts. I
also like the bookmarks feature and the ability to skip around in a
file. Handling content over the internet isv't very accessible though.

I like FooBar 2000 because it's interface is so simple. You can also
manage local libraries with it. Setting it up is kind of tedious though,
since you need to set up all of your own hot keys. I don't think it
manages podcasts for you. It does come in a portable flavor though,
which is nice if you want to run it off of a USB drive or SD card.

I still pull up WMP occasionally, but that's mostly just to rip CD's.

I'm not sure what OS or screen reader is being used in this case, but
clicking on the header for the name column in Windows Explorer (or
probably most any application) should also take care of this. I would do
this with JAWS in Windows XP if I wanted a Z to A sort instead of an A
to Z sort. Clicking on the name header will toggle this back and forth.

No, you'll have to use Firefox or Internet Explorer to download the .rar
file just like you would any other file. Click on the link to download
the file, make sure you go through the dialogs to have the file saved
and know where it is going to be located on your hard drive. Then you
can use 7-Zip to extract the files from the .rar file. You can start
7-Zip and then point it at the .rar file and do the extract. I don't
have the exact instructions at the moment. I think 7-Zip will also place
an entry in your File pulldown in Windows Explorer, so you can also just
find the file in Windows Explorer and then use the context menu or the
File pull down to extract the files.

I think it's already been mentioned but I use DVD Audio Extractor from
http://www.dvdae.com/ to rip the audio from a DVD. It's accessible and
easy to use, but not free. It does have a 30 day free trial though.
