RE: Security Feature Suggestion: "Delete Password" on exit?

2004-08-25 Thread James Weatherall
Alex,

If the password is specified on the command line to the VNC Server, (albeit
in obfuscated hex format) then it won't be saved to the registry.

RE: how to change configuration settings/parameters when running winvnc server version 4 from command line?

2004-08-26 Thread James Weatherall
Yuris,

For security, the Password parameter must be specified in the obfuscated hex
form. The easiest way to do this is to use vncconfig to save a password to
the registry, then copy the hex form of that password on to your
command-line for -register.

RE: DoS attack VNC 4.0

2004-08-31 Thread James Weatherall
Benedict et al,

Yes, there is a problem in the way that the current release of VNC Server 4
for Windows handles excessive connection attempts. Note that the free VNC
release is not designed for use on untrusted networks - if you need to
access a free VNC Server across the Internet then you should use a system
such as SSH to "tunnel" the connections securely between sites.

The upcoming VNC Server Enterprise Edition (
http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise/ ) includes protection from this
and a class of similar but more advanced attacks. This protection will also
be included in the next VNC Server 4 GPL release.

RE: End of stream

2004-08-31 Thread James Weatherall
Joe,

The most obvious cause of an EndOfStream is that the Hosts string is set to
only allow connections from 192.168.1.0 - connections from any other host
will be accepted but immediately dropped.

Are you sure that's the address of the host you're connecting from?

RE: PestPatrol & RealVNC

2004-08-31 Thread James Weatherall
Srinivasan,

Various virus-killer programs flag VNC Server as a potential threat, simply
because it allows remote access to a machine. Unfortunately, virus-killers
don't typically have enough intelligence to discern a "safe" VNC
installation from an open one (e.g. one requiring no password), so they just
flag it up as a warning to be on the safe side. (Some other software
deliberately flags various "potential threats" purely so that the authors
can bolster the number of "threats" they claim to detect, of course...)

Assuming that VNC was installed by the computer's administrator
deliberately, you should be able to safely ignore the PestPatrol warning.

RE: No cursor shown with VNC/UltraVNC1.00R18 combination

2004-08-31 Thread James Weatherall
David,

It sounds as though their server isn't handling locally-rendered cursors
properly.

To check what the viewer is seeing, you can try running your vncviewer with
the command-line:

vncviewer -console -log=*:stderr:100

to see whether it prints any messages regarding the cursor.

RE: DoS attack VNC 4.0

Mike,

The DoS attack only affects VNC Server for Windows - you shouldn't therefore
lose data as a consequence of an attack.

There is no need to set up a firewall, only to use the LocalHost option to
restrict connections to those originating from the local machine.

RE: No cursor shown with VNC/UltraVNC1.00R18 combination

2004-09-01 Thread James Weatherall
David,

It's normal to see that message immediately after a pixel format change. If
you see it anywhere else, then it indicates that the viewer was sent an
empty cursor by the server.

RE: No cursor shown with VNC/UltraVNC1.00R18 combination

2004-09-01 Thread James Weatherall
VNC 3.3.7 didn't support local cursor rendering at all, in either the viewer
or the server. So connecting VNC 3.3.7 viewer to VNC 4 server and vice
versa are equivalent in that respect.

RE: Mouse Pointer at server end

2004-09-03 Thread James Weatherall
Mark,

The next release will address this. It's an artefact of the way in which
VNC Server 4 ensures that it captures alpha-blended windows and some other
special effects.

You are directing your browser to connect to the VNC port, not the HTTP/Java
Viewer) port.

Please see the docs for more details.

RE: Serious bug with X forwarding?

2004-09-03 Thread James Weatherall
Daniel,

You state that you are disconnecting either by kill -9'ing the vncviewer
(which is overkill and not necessary in all but extreme cases) or by using
Exit from the F8 menu.

Are you sure that the user is not actually disconnecting by selecting Logout
from their window manager on the server?

RE: Mac OS-X to VNC

John,

Are you connecting by name or IP address?

If connecting by name, bear in mind that Windows machines will use NetBIOS
name resolution for names that aren't found in DNS, so they may know each
other's names even though your Mac doesn't...

Simon,

VNC 4 and VNC 3 are protocol-compatible - their viewers and servers can be
used interchangeably if required. All that you'll see is that certain
features (such as local cursor rendering) aren't available unless both sides
support them, obviously.

What is the problem you are seeing with the "piece of kit" & CotVNC / Java
Viewer? Is the kit supplying a Java viewer of its own or are you getting
one from somewhere else?

RE: Mac OS-X to VNC

2004-09-06 Thread James Weatherall
Simon,

Full security, including username/password based authentication, is
currently available only in the AdderLink IP Viewer. This support will be
more generally available with the release of VNC Enterprise Edition (see
http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise for further information).

The most likely cause for CotVNC seeing the connection close unexpectedly is
that CotVNC doesn't support the secure session protocol used by the
AdderLink IP, and that the AdderLink IP is set to have Encryption Always On.
If you set Encryption Prefer On then you should find that CotVNC can
connect, albeit without encryption.
If that doesn't help then select Force Protocol 3.3 from the Advanced
Properties page, which will make the AdderLink IP more compatible with old &
poorly behaved viewers.

The Java Viewer supplied with WinVNC 3.3.7 is older than the one supplied
with the AdderLink IP - it's possible that there is a legacy compatibility
issue there between the new viewer and Safari's VM. Do you get any output
from the Java console when running the AdderLink IP Java Viewer?

RE: VNC V4 - VIEWER - Control/Break

2004-09-07 Thread James Weatherall
John,

Are you using VNC Viewer 4 for Windows or VNC Viewer 4 for Java to access
your servers? Which platforms are your servers running? Which platforms
are your viewers running?

Ctrl+Break verifiably works (by just pressing Ctrl+break in the viewer) when
viewing a Windows NT 4 box from another Windows machine, using VNC Viewer 4
for Windows & VNC Server 4.

Check that you are running VNC as a service, and that Fast User Switching or
Remote Desktop have not been used on the machine.

RE: VNC V4 - VIEWER - Control/Break

2004-09-08 Thread James Weatherall
John,

Please remember to Reply-To-All when replying to list messages.

The problem you are seeing is caused by using a DOS based program under
Windows 95/98/Me at the VNC Server end. In spite of Microsoft's
documentation which makes a statement to the contrary, when key events are
generated by VNC Server, they must include the key scancode in order for DOS
applications to "see" the keyboard input. VNC Server correctly generates
scancodes for keyboard input it generates, but unfortunately the system call
it uses to do this returns the wrong data under Windows 95/98/Me when
Ctrl-Break is pressed, so no scancode is generated.

If you run your DOS apps under NT/2K/XP etc then things will work as
expected.

According to the Windows Firewall API specification, what you describe as
"not a good idea" is exactly what Microsoft *are* allowing applications to
do. Any program run by an Administrator of a Windows XP machine can just
add itself to the exceptions list of the firewall and open up whatever ports
it likes.

The same point that there is in having ipchains/iptables in Linux - it
allows an Administrator to restrict access to only those services that are
actually required, so that poorly coded services don't provide backdoors to
attackers. The intent is not to protect from malicious programs run as
root/Administrator (or at least it shouldn't be...)

JB,

You need to go to Connections and click on "Add", then select "Allow" and
press Ok.

VNC 4 refuses connections unless their IP matches a rule in the Hosts rules
list - if you empty the list then no connections will be accepted.

Can I ask why you deleted the (default) "accept all" rule in the first
place?

Kenton,

There's no record of you ever having reported VNC 4 to not work on the list,
which would have been the first logical step if it didn't. Did you have
problem with the viewer or the server?

I notice from previous posts that you're using ZoneAlarm - be aware that
certain old versions of ZoneAlarm had serious bugs that prevented VNC Viewer
4 from ever connecting to any hosts, even though VNC Viewer 3 continued to
be able to. The behaviour resulting from their bug would give exactly the
results described by JB.

RE: server closed connection unexpectedly

2004-09-09 Thread James Weatherall
Hi,

Assuming there isn't something fundamentally broken in your Windows XP
installation's TCP stack, there will be messages other than "unknown network
event for listener" in the application log. They will be flagged as errors.
This also assumes that you are connecting to the correct port in the first
place. Can you use telnet to check that you're connecting to the right
port? (You should see "RFB 003.008")

Your assertion that "it's definitely a software problem in VNC 4" is bogus.
It's almost certainly a configuration issue, although it could also be a
problem with the host system. Reminder - this is software we've tested
extenensively and wouldn't have released if it "just didn't work"...

The log output you sent was from the server - you can run the viewer with

RE: Version 4 and multiple displays under Windows XP

2004-09-10 Thread James Weatherall
Robert,

I'm a little confused. VNC provides remote access to desktops and you seem
to be complaining about it doing just that. Making the whole desktop
available remotely is precisely what it should do! If the problem is really
the sheer scale of the total desktop, can't you simply move the monitors to
be side-by-side?

Further detail on the Desktop options not working would be useful. In
particular, are effects such as shaded window titlebars and anti-aliased
fonts being disabled or not? Have you enabled all of the Desktop options?

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

P.S. As an aside, Enterprise Edition
(http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise) will include functionality to
support remoting of an individual monitor rather than of the whole desktop.

Not if you're using VNC 4 - then you simply specify host::port rather than
host:display, so in this case

Host::80

As is stated in the documentation, the current VNC release is not compatible
with Fast User Switching.

RE: VNC on Port 80

2004-09-11 Thread James Weatherall
James,

The server runs on a particular port, and the viewer must be told that port.
If you "set the viewer port" to something different to what the server is
listening for connections, then the server won't receive those connections.

RE: windows xp sp2

2004-09-11 Thread James Weatherall
Vince,

What are the instructions you gave intended to achieve?

The problem that Mark is seeing is probably that SP2 has the firewall on by
default - he either needs to disable the firewall or add an exception for
the VNC port (usually 5900).

Cheers,

Max(?),

Have you checked that you don't have "Only accept connections from the local
machine" ticked in the Connections tab of the VNC Server (Service-Mode)
Options panel?

RE: local host vs local address,

2004-09-13 Thread James Weatherall
Max,

VNC Server binds to network interfaces in one of two ways. Either:

- It binds to all network interfaces (INADDR_ANY), or
- It binds only to the local loopback interface (127.0.0.1)

If your tray icon says that it has bound to 127.0.0.1 then one of three
things has happened:

- Your machine only has local loopback & no network interface is available
- You have explicitly configured VNC Server to only listen for local
loopback connections
- VNC Server is actually listening on INADDR_ANY, but the tray icon contents
are out of date and reflect a point in time before the network interfaces
had come up. This tray icon behaviour is a known bug. It could cause a
Service-Mode server to show "Not accepting connections" or "127.0.0.1" in
some cases.

I assume that you've tried connecting to the server in spite of the tray
icon's contents and established that it's not accepting connections?

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: iPAQ connection

2004-09-13 Thread James Weatherall
Jim,

I'm confused - you say below that "I can connect by WiFi using another PC to
the XP machine using VNC 4 which would further imply that port 5900 is not
being used by anyone else". But earlier you said that you couldn't connect
to the server.

Are you actually saying that VNC 4 server works from all viewers except the
CE one?

Jim,

The chances are that the viewer you are using on the CE machine just isn't
fully compatible with VNC. You may find that it will work if you select
"Use protocol 3.3" in the Legacy panel of the VNC Server Options.

Guys,

Is Alan's prognosis correct, in suggesting that the prior use of Remote
Desktop or Fast User Switching has caused that behaviour?

If so then we'll look into providing a more useful error response in this
situation, until full XP compatibility is complete.

Cheers,

Vince,

Yes and no. We have a server in development, but it won't be released for
some time. No servers for Symbian or Nokia as yet, I'm afraid.

There are some third-party ports of VNC to other platforms that you should
be able to find via Google, that may work.

RE: DI 624 problems

Have you installed any updates to your D-Link drivers?
Have you checked that your D-Link network is actually "up" on the home
machine, before the D-Link AirPlus application has run?

Under Windows 2000, we have found that the latest D-Link drivers seem to not
connect until the D-Link AirPlus application is run with Administrator
rights, rendering them more or less useless. Could this be the problem you
are seeing, albeit under XP?

RE: connecting through a linksys router

2004-09-19 Thread James Weatherall
Geof & Wez,

I think Geof is a little confused. Incoming connections to VNC Server for
Windows are by default made to port 5900, and the Java viewer is served on
port 5800. Under Unix platforms, the Xvnc servers will accept connections
on 5901, 5902, etc. All "clients" (i.e. VNC Viewers) connecting to a
particular VNC Servr use the same host/port combination, i.e.
name.no-ip.info:0 will be used by all viewers wishing to connect to VNC
Server zero on machine name.no-ip.info.

So Wes needs to open ports 5900 and 5800 on his firewall and then put
http://name.no-ip.info:5800/ in his browser. He shouldn't need to change
the host name, since the Java applet will fill that field in automatically
with the right value.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

The first thing to specify is whether or not you have a firewall enabled
(either on the host machine or elsewhere on your network, between the viewer

RE: x0rfbserver or x11vnc?

Grant & Ssnia,

To remote the local X11 display, you can either use x0vncserver, which is a
standard X application that acts as a VNC server or, for better performance,
you can use the VNC module for X11, assuming that your X server supports
loadable modules.

RE: VNC Licensing Terms

Tim,

I'm afraid that's not true. It depends on the nature of the commercial
product with which VNC is to be bundled, in particular whether it is classed
as a "derived work". It is not clear in this case whether the commercial
product is "aggregated" or "combined" with VNC (i.e. classed as "derived").

RE: Experiencing a problem with VNC

2004-09-21 Thread James Weatherall
Keith,
I'm afraid that VNC in its present form is not in general suitable for use
by visually-impaired users via screen-reader techniques. VNC uses the
Remote Framebuffer Protocol, which transfers pixel data from the server
computer to the viewer, without any actual understanding of what those
pixels mean, in most cases. This means that the viewer has no access to the
details of text in window titles, dialog boxes, etc.
VNC Viewer will send the key events you type to the remote computer but will
not provide any feedback compatible with simple screen readers, unless they
actually try to make sense of the pixels it draws in its window. I suspect
that most screen readers access the actual text data in window titles, etc,
rather than trying to "read" the text from the graphics.
Cheers,

RE: "server closed connection unexpectedly"

2004-09-21 Thread James Weatherall
Matt,

Server closed connection unexpectedly

Often means things like:
- VNC was running as an application , but on a locked workstation
- Something went horribly wrong internally and the server had to close the
connection.

You can look for the actual reason by looking in the Applications event log
of the server machine for WinVNC4 errors.

RE: Starting vnc with ipv6

2004-09-21 Thread James Weatherall
Dimitri,

IPv6 is not supported in the current release. We do have IPv6 support for
Enterprise Edition in development.

Philippe,

When you say "I always get a timeout error", is that at the point of
downloading the Java viewer, or at the point of trying to connect back to
the server?

Are you changing the contents of the Server specification box in the viewer,

RE: VNC through firewall

2004-09-23 Thread James Weatherall
Jimmy,

In general that's not advisable with the GPL release, which doesn't encrypt
network traffic. You should either access your VNC systems via a secure
tunnel such as SSH, or look at the new VNC Enterprise Edition
(http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise), to be released shortly... :)

Use of Enterprise Edition through a firewall simply involves opening a port
(usually 5900 for Windows machines) in your firewall, to allow incoming
connections to the server.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: Installation of VNC x86 Options/Switches

2004-09-23 Thread James Weatherall
Brian,

We're using InnoSetup for the installer, so the /silent and /verysilent
flags will work & will do a default (server + viewer) install. You can then
separately apply registry settings to configure the server, if required.

Alternatively VNC Enterprise Edition
(http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise) will include access to the VNC
Deployment Tool, which is capable of installing & configuring VNC servers on
remote NT/2K/XP-based systems.

Cheers,

RE: ZRLE error (space issue?)

2004-09-23 Thread James Weatherall
Scott,

The original post on the subject remains valid - the ZRLE encoder includes a
sanity check to prevent excessive resource usage by the Zlib algorithm and
unfortunately the current release tries to be a little *too* sane,
preventing very large desktops from working correctly.

If you are feeling up to the challenge of rebuilding a server from source,
the offending limit is in rfb/ZRLEEncoder.cxx and looks like:

int ZRLEEncoder::maxLen = 513 * 1024; // enough for width 2048 32-bit pixels

So you may wish to change it to:

int ZRLEEncoder::maxLen = 2049 * 1024; // enough for width 8192 32-bit
pixels

Or possibly even higher!

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

The response RFB 003.003 just indicates that the machine in question is
running an old VNC server.

How does this relate to your original problem?

RE: server closed connection unexpectedly

2004-09-24 Thread James Weatherall
Sergio,

Your previous mails stated that "If i deinstall VNC 4.0 and reinstall 3.3
all works fine...", from which you originally asserted that it must be a VNC
4-specific problem. Now you are saying that the server is running VNC 3.3.
Looking at the previous mails, though, it appears that actually you didn't
write the original (and needlessly abusive) mail regarding VNC not working,
unelss you are [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Assuming that you are not the same person, and that the information below is
correct, the most likely causes of the problem you're seeing are that the
server has an unsupported pixel format, or is locked & VNC is not running as
a service.

You can enable the VNC 3 DebugMode and DebugLevel registry settings in order
to get debug output to check what is happening on the problem server.

RE: Help please

2004-09-24 Thread James Weatherall
Nick,

Please try to give a more descriptive subject line in future posts -
tracking down previous posts with titles like "Help please" isn't very easy!

For your system it may be better to start by running x0vncserver as an
application within your X session, and then try connecting to that. Once
you have established that your viewer can connect to that, you can switch
back to using the module.

Cheers,

2004-09-24 Thread James Weatherall
Nick, (msg re-CC'ed to list, for the list subscribers' general edification!)

Now that you've established that x0vncserver works, and thus that your
network is not the issue, we can return to the module installation.

Vnc.so should work once it's been added to the X server config file and the
X server has been restarted. Things to check are whether you're editing the
right config file, which X server you're using, and whether the X server is
logging errors.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: Help please

2004-09-24 Thread James Weatherall
Nick,

If I remember correctly, we don't log any messages of that sort from vnc.so.
It looks rather more as though the I810 and RADEON drivers have some
component within them that they happen to call "VNC"...

Which X server are you using vnc.so with?

Jason,

Both of the features you describe exist in the current release.

Please read the documentation at http://www.realvnc.com/v4/winvnc.html, and
see the output from "winvnc4 --help".

RE: How to track use of VNC

Daniel,

That depends on which version of VNC Server you are running, and what level
of access (Administrator, etc), the "nefarious" user may have had to those
machines.

RE: Problem with RealVNC 4.0 on Guests of VMWare ESX

2004-10-13 Thread James Weatherall
Salvatore,

Are you saying that just running VNC Server 4 on the servers in question
causes the Ctrl-Alt-Del window to dissappear after a couple of hours? Or
does there have to be a VNC connection active for that behaviour to be seen?

What are the settings that you have configured the server with?

If you are running VNC Server 4 then there will definitely be events logged
in the Applications Event Log, every time a connection is opened or closed -
are you sure you don't see any events in there?

You can enable further logging by adding the "Log" registry entry as a
REG_SZ under HKLM/Software/RealVNC/WinVNC4 and setting it to "*:file:100".
This will create a verbose log file in "C:\temp\WinVNC4.log" on the host
machine.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: Problem with RealVNC 4.0 on Guests of VMWare ESX

2004-10-13 Thread James Weatherall
Salvatore,

Please see VNC 4.0 Known Bug #2 at
http://www.realvnc.com/v4/known-bugs.html, which relates to use of the
Logoff on Disconnect option and a bug in its implementation in the current
release. This bug is fixed in the Enterprise release and will be fixed in
the next GPL release too.

The fact that your VMs sit there with a blank screen indicates that they are
incapable of shutting down cleanly, which suggests other problems with those
guest operating system installations, by the way!

Cheers,

RE: How to track use of VNC

2004-10-13 Thread James Weatherall
John & John,

TightVNC is based on the old VNC 3 codebase, which didn't log to the system
event log, so you won't get those log events if you're using TightVNC.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: Problem with RealVNC 4.0 on Guests of VMWare ESX

2004-10-13 Thread James Weatherall
Salvatore,

It could be that the Logoff handling bug causes further undesirable
interactions with the host OS, causing the slow shutdown, but our tests
relating to the bug didn't show that behaviour at the time, just the reboot
behaviour.

Cheers,

RE: Problems with RealVNC and PalmVNC

2004-10-14 Thread James Weatherall
Alvaro,

You may wish to upgrade to VNC 4, both because it's easier to get debug
output from VNC Server 4, in order to diagnose the problem, and because VNC
4 supports the Protocol3.3 option, which can help with compatibility with
some poorly behaved VNC Viewers.

RE: RealVNC Bug? "Rect Too Big", "ZRLE: not enough space for first line?", client update freeze

2004-10-14 Thread James Weatherall
Max,

The ZRLE issue is a known problem with the current release, which is fixed
in VNC Enterprise Edition (http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise) and
will be fixed in the next GPL release. The workaround for multi-monitor
systems is to explicitely set the server to use Hextile, by the way.

The other issue may be related, but may not be - more details would be
useful.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: VNC Server Command Line Options

2004-10-15 Thread James Weatherall
Andrew,

Re Hosts, see http://www.realvnc.com/v4/winvnc.html#5

-register is used by the installer to install the VNC Server service.

The VNC Password is specified as a 3DES-encrypted binary value. There are
various third-party tools for creating these values, or you can simply use
the vncconfig tool to set it.

RE: RE: (no subject)

2004-10-15 Thread James Weatherall
Ken,

If you are running VNC Server 4 then there will be events logged regarding
connections being made and dropped, in the Event Log.

Are you sure you are using VNC Server 4?

RE: Authentication Failure

2004-10-16 Thread James Weatherall
Michael,

Firstly, RFB 003.003 is not the standard response you'd expect from VNC
Server 4, unless it has been run with the Protocol3.3 flag set. So it
sounds as though you have installed something other than VNC Server 4 on
their NT 4 server.

RE: Zooming (scaling) in RealVNC 4

2004-10-17 Thread James Weatherall
Rami,

The scaling support in VNC Viewer 3.3 was experimental (it showed up some
serious bugs in certain display drivers that could cause machines to blue
screen) and was only ever available for Windows.

VNC Viewer 4.0 has never had scaling as a feature, because it is a new
code-base with no code in common with the old VNC 3.3 system.

We have recently developed full scaling support, which is currently
available in VNC Viewer Enterprise Edition
(http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise).

RE: possible security bug in the Windows Server

2004-10-17 Thread James Weatherall
Rasmus,

The example you give does not have the behaviour you describe.

It is the case that the classic VNC Authentication method only considers the
first eight characters of the password, though, so that 12345678 would be
considered the same as 12345678test, for example.

No. The viewer is a viewer. The server is a server. The server serves a
desktop to the viewer, and accepts input from the viewer. The viewer views
the server and sends input to it.

Feico,

Which version of VNC Server are you using? VNC 4 already includes some code
to reduce resource consumption in the case where no updates are ever
requested, but further optimisation is possible.

We have plans to release a hooking driver as an optional add-on for VNC
Server.

RE: Request: RealVNC no display mode

2004-09-30 Thread James Weatherall
Feico,

Understood. The version you are using includes one optimisation for
Win2VNC-like clients, which is why the resource consumption appears to be
around half of when a normal viewer is connection.

Your assessment of the cause of the resource consumption is correct - VNC
Server must keep both a buffer to blit the physical display into, and a
comparison buffer. The comparison buffer is optimised to only exist if at
least one update request has been received since there were last no clients
connected.

Your assessment of accounting for when to release the blit buffer is
incorrect - but hey, 1 out of 2 isn't bad! :) Accounting for release of the
buffer is actually simpler than that and the hard bit is actually handling
"lazy" allocation of the blit buffer in the first place.

That level of optimisation hasn't been a priority for us because
Win2VNC/x2vnc etc are relatively obscure tools & because desktop systems
tend to have huge amounts of memory at their disposal. (A typical XP system
seems to take about 140Mb just for a single user logged on with no other
programs running, for example!). If a simple & safe solution becomes
apparent then we'll certainly consider including it.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

RE: VNC 4.0 Registry entries

2004-09-30 Thread James Weatherall
Chris,

Your statement is misleading. TightVNC and other projects based on VNC 3.3
have a number of settings accessible only via registry entries, termed
"Advanced Settings".

VNC 4 either provides settings through the GUI interfaces, or eliminates
them because they are no longer relevant. Only a couple of very low level
parameters remain purely registry-controlled.

The setting to which Gustavo refers is one of the no-longer-relevant ones.

Cheers,

This is incorrect. The Java and native VNC Viewers are interchangeable.
The most common cause of issues with the Java Viewer is the use of a
separate port for serving the Java Viewer from the one used for the VNC
protocol.

This shouldn't happen. Which platform is your laptop running? Basically,
there is no way that any application should be able to blue-screen your
machine unless the operating system or drivers are broken in some way.

Port 80 is not used by the VNC protocol, by default, nor to server the Java
Viewer.

Yes. We tend to recommend turning it off entirely purely so that you don't
try to connect in to your XP box and find it won't work because somebody
else has FUSed it, or that you don't connect in and forget about FUS and
lock yourself out.

Related to that, an XP compatibility module is in development.
