The only time I ever perform offline backups is if the server is offline for
some other, major reason -- like migrating to new hardware that can't be
done using Ed's move server method, if I have to do a restore and I don't
have a restore server, etc.

You should log in to the server using the domain admin account, but when
Exchange or SQL asks for an account to "run" with, it should be a seperate,
distinct account. That way, you're not logging into the server with the
Exchange Service Account ID, which is bad.

other process was trying to access the mailbox, and because the ID was
locked, that interfered. As far as I know, when Outlook is shut down, it's

With the set up you have, it really doesn't matter, because your partitions
are either sharing physical drives, or spanning physical drives -- so if a

1) Do as comprehensive a backup as you can. If you have time to fully
backup the Store every day, do it.
2) Brick Level Backup sucks. If your users delete stuff accidentally, use
Deleted Item Retention, or tell them to pack sand.
