Resetting all passwords
Hello Listers,I was wondering if you could advise me on a password issue. We basically want to lock all of our users out of our QA system, but leave their accounts active. One thought was to reset everyone's PW to something they don't know. Is there a way to reset everyone's PW or re-enforce the default password. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

Changing a Remedy Login ID In Bulk

Remedy RBE in ITSM 8.1
Can someone tell me in ITSM 8.1, can I create an incident through email. Locals/Localization
This is pretty much the same question that I asked a week ago, but this time I am coming at it from a localization stand point. Example: I have a help desk in Spain and I have already upload their prod an op-cats in Spanish under the local for Spain and Spain tenant. Then Spain creates a ticket and transfers it to the USA help desk, which has it's prod and op-cats uploaded in the English local and tenant. Shouldn't the prod and op-cats display in English when the ticket is viewed in the USA? I can't be the only person to ever ask this. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

I was wondering if anyone here can shed some light on how multi-languages are handled in ITSM 8.1. Then when Spain transfers a ticket to the the USA help desk, which has it's prod and op-cats uploaded in English. How will the prod and op-cats appear in the USA system if it originated in Spain? Oh forgot to mention it's all 1 single system with Spain and the USA both being separate tenants. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

Re: Strange Port issue after P to V
Well resolved the port issue, which aside from the above was not actually a port issues, it just manifested itself as one. Turns out that IIS-7, as a default, has a request filtering security features turned on. Part of this request filtering feature is to automatically deny Double Escape Characters. Many of the URLs in ITSM-7 use double escape characters such as the + sign. You need to go to the MS kb article below, and follow the steps to allow double escapes, and yup it does open up a security hole. Is this something that can be done with a basic db copy. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

Not sure if this is asking for too much, or that I'm crossing the lines of info sharing etiquette wit this question, but here it goes. I have been Working on re-working my clients current Product and Op category matrix, which is in bad shape. If was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their category matrix just so that I would have something to start with. This way I am not re-inventing the wheel. I figured someone out there my actually have a Cat matrix that they are happy with. If you not comfortable with sharing I understand. Re: Email engine out of memory error
I also solved this problem a few years back by setting up a few mail box filters on our mail server that limited the attachement size of mail coming in. If a message came in that was over 5mb we would dump it via the filter and auto reply back to the customer with an alternate method of delivering large files. We also setup a job to restart the AR mail service every night at 4 am. After doing this the issue went away for ever. On Wed, 1/7/15, Davin Lindner-Green davin.lindner-gr...@raptek.com wrote: Subject: Re: Email engine out of memory error To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Date: Wednesday, January 7, 2015, 11:57 AM Hello Hany, You don't mention the version of Email Engine or whether you are on Windows, but if you are on Windows one problem that exists with the email engine at least in version 7.6.4 (and others as well) is that there is a leading space in one of the registry keys. If you click Start Run Regedit, then locate the registry keys at “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BMC Remedy Email Engine - your server name 1\Parameters” Check the values in JVM Option Number 3 and 4. If you edit the value, you may find that there is a leading space (the first character is a space). If so remove that leading space, save the value and restart email engine. The effect of the leading space is that the email engine JVM doesn't get the -Xmx option correctly so runs with a default max heap size, which is not sufficient and leads to these types of errors. I don't know if you followed Monika's suggestion below to edit the Java Runtime Environment Settings whether that would also resolve this issue. I'm not clear on when and how parameters set in the Java Control Panel are passed to Java processes like email engine, so that suggestion may also fix the issue as well. Theo.. was this an ARS upgrade only, or were you upgrading the whole ITSM suite. I'm looking into an upgrading of only my ARS 7.0.01 base, which has ITSM running on top of it, to to 8.1 or 7.6. We would leave the ITSM portion as is for now. Are you saying to do this we need to install every version of ARS until we get to 8.1 On Monday, December 15, 2014 2:11 PM, Theo Fondse (GMail) theo.fon...@gmail.com wrote: **RE: Help with upgrade pathHi Carina,We upgraded our Custom-Only 7.1/10g/Slolaris server recently to 7.6.4/11g/RedHat.I always suggest NOT to skip a major version when doing an upgrade, due to the fact that BMC only supports the last 3 versions, and therefore, might not test their software during development for upgrades from unsupported versions at the time. (I seriously doubt that BMC would have tested a straight upgrade from 7.1 to 7.6.04 or much less 8.0 or 8.1, due to their version support policies). Before I started my current stint at the company where I am working now, they attempted an upgrade from 7.1 to 7.6.4 and failed several times.Even with the assistance of a local support partner, the upgrade failed and they eventually gave up.The solution to the problem later turned out to be that you should not skip any major versions and go through the installer logs to find out what went wrong if the installer fails. We found a caveat with some of the AR System forms and tables which had to be addressed manually before the upgrade in order to get the upgrade to work.I suggest the following steps which worked for us to do a successful upgrade (please test it first on a development/test environment before doing this on prod):1. Back up the current DB (full DB export dump).2. Export and delete all records from the AR System User Central File form.3. Export and delete all records from the AR System User Preference form.4. Licensing Question.
Hello Listers, I was wondering if I have a version of ARS (like 7.1), and I have a number of ARS licenses agains that server. Now, if I go and upgrade ARS to 7.6 or 8.1. The other thing to note is that these take time to produce so why would someone just give them away, that is professional suicide. Many of the partner companies make a living out of having teams for testing with their own test cases (large teams), again these take time to develop and tweak to get correct so why would they give these away for free where there is a business for them? AMIGO was the BMC Professional Services upgrade program, so why would they give away their IP for free? The older 7.1 Guides actually had unit tests in them that could form the basis of testing, however it is not difficult to formulate a plan as the tests are very generic in nature. There are some behaviors that may have changed between ARS 7.1 and 7.6 and might give you a few minor surprises but for the most part the def won't care. I think if anything you might run into more issues with 7.1 binaries and a 7.6 server. Assignment Engine and Approval Engine might be interesting since those are now AR components but were ITSM components in earlier versions. You might choose to no upgrade those as part of the AR upgrade to keep them inline with version that the ITSM def were designed around. From your previous post it sounds like you (or your customer) don't mind if it is an unsupported configuration and are working more to keep the lights on. Really the only way to know will be to stand up a sandbox and test thoroughly. Although if you no longer have support getting licenses for that sandbox could be prohibitive. Your customer might need to check what they want to do (or not do) with reality. How important is Remedy to them? I find it hard to belive that not a consultant out there has ever gone through an upgrade/deployment and had to have the user population test the newley stood up system. Re: ITSM 7 Defs Running on ARS 7.6
Long story here but they use remedy every day, yet they dont want to upgrade itsm they are happy enough with their itsm as it is. However, they are running in to compliance issues outsode of remedy, like with MS. Again long story, but I'm just checking if this could be a viable plan B. So I really need some ipinions to ring in here. You have my blessing. smarta$$ off I have not specifically run ITSM 7.1 on ARS 7.6 but largely you should be ok. Not important enough to pay for support but important enough to try and keep it updated? Re: Remedy Test Plan
ITSM 7.1 is the same everywhere (until its customized of course). So it stands to reason that there are 1000s of test docs out there that match up directly to itsm 7 OOB. Its an old unsupported system now, no need to keep those docs so close to the chest. That being said, a generic plan would simply be to test the processes that the ITSM products use. Set up some configuration data, to be sure that the back-end forms are populated. Set up a simple approval process, and be sure that you test that it works. Create a record via email, and test that outgoing ones work, too. Any plug-in (like LDAP or WS) that you use should be tested. Anything that runs as a separate daemon or service should be tested. Be sure that you can access the CMDB from both the Atrium console and from ITSM. It's not rocket surgery. This means that we will have an existing server running win server2003- with remedy itsm-7 already installed. We are planning to upgrade the existing OS to winserver 2008 and, basically not touch remedy. ITSM7 on win server 2008 is officially not supported according to BMC. My advice would be to try to get a Job with a consulting firm that specializes in rapid solutions. These places usually set you up on projects that last from anywhere between a few weeks, to 6 months, to a year. Each time you finish a project your on to another one. This is good because you will be thrown into many different implementations quickly, and forced to learn their setup and how they use the system. I have yet to ever see a company that doe not use ITSM with ate least some level of customization, and there are ways to do that safely. Often when you sign with a company like these they pay for your training, because they can bill you out a a higher rate (Column would be a good example). Remedy Refresher needed
Hello everyone I have not posted on the ARS list in years, but I find that I am now in need of the brain power of this list. I have been a developer for about 12-15 years, going all the way back to Remedy 2.0 and Baystone up to remedy ARS 7.6. Unfortunately I now find myself in a situation in which I am derailed. My company has switched off of remedy (and they regret it) and is now using an application called CA Service Desk which is at least 10yers behind Remedy in its evolution. I have been painfully working with CA Service Desk since October of 2012, and have done almost nothing with Remedy. The remedy job market seem pretty good lately and I have been trying to jump back in. I have had several interviews for some great jobs but I have bombed them all because my Remedy detailed knowledge is way too cloudy (use it or lose it). When asked to provide any kind of detailed knowledge I stumble because of my 9mth hiatus. So what I am looking for is this. Is there some kind of free self test, self assessment, or study guide that I can get my hands on to help bring my skills back to the forefront. A simple list of 100 questions would help (anything would help). Thanks in advance and I look forward to your replies. Oh and some final parting advice. If anyone ever tries to point you in the direction of CA Service Desk Run..Run as fast as you can in the other direction. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years
Re: Remedy Refresher needed
LJ this list is great. Everyone keep them coming. Its not that I don't know the answers. It that they are cloudy when asked to deliver the answer on the fly. I'm very proficient in ARS and ITSM, but it not at the forefront of my mind. Like on one interview last week for a $100hr 1-year to hire job, I was asked How do you delete entries via workflow?. I could not for the life of me remember that the thing was called RUNPROCESS. Although I have ran the gambit on the RUNPROCESS commands in my sleep. Thank you all this is really helpful From: Longwing, Lj llongw...@usgs.gov To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 2:44 PM Subject: Re: Remedy Refresher needed ** if you can answer say 2/3 or 3/4 of those, you should be relatively good at Remedy core administration, but a completely different list of questions would be involved in determining ITSM capabilities of a developer., and those questions don't do anything to determine what sort of process a person would follow to customize an ITSM form.
