Resetting all passwords

2015-07-17 Thread Scott Hallenger
Hello Listers,I was wondering if you could advise me on a password issue. We
basically want to lock all of our users out of our QA system, but leave their
accounts active. One thought was to reset everyone's PW to something they don't
know. Is there a way to reset everyone's PW or re-enforce the default password.

Changing a Remedy Login ID In Bulk

2015-05-14 Thread Scott Hallenger
Hello Lister's,I was wondering if it is possible to update/change an existing
Remedy login ID of it were to be exported with its GUID or entry ID and then
re-imported with the changed info. I'm on ITSM 8.1. For example, if I wanted to
change jdowe to jdowe1, is it possible to do this through export
re-import.

Remedy RBE in ITSM 8.1

2015-05-13 Thread Scott Hallenger
Can someone tell me in ITSM 8.1, can I create an incident through email. So if
I send in an email with a specific subject or other content, can I configure
the RBE to create an incident with a specific Op and Prod cat structure? This
seems very doable, but I want to be sure before I go running my mouth on this.

Locals/Localization

2015-04-28 Thread Scott Hallenger
This is pretty much the same question that I asked a week ago, but this time I
am coming at it from a localization stand point.
Example:
I have a help desk in Spain and I have already upload their prod an op-cats in
Spanish under the local for Spain and Spain tenant. Then Spain creates a ticket
and transfers it to the USA help desk, which has it's prod and op-cats uploaded
in the English local and tenant. Shouldn't the prod and op-cats display in
English when the ticket is viewed in the USA? I can't be the only person to
ever ask this.

Thanks LJ,
So if I were to test this in SoapUI which url would I use to simulate an
external call to the wysdl.

The one from my external scrypt:

Or the one from the actual Remed web service

 Scott,If it's an inbound, someone
calling a web service that you are publishing, then the logs
are going to be on your Mid-Tier server.  To see the detail
that you need, you'll need to ensure that the logging
level is set sufficiently high, and ensure that you are
looking at the correct mid-tier server (if there are
multiple in that environment), but it's definitely a
 Mid-Tier log thing :)

Well resolved the port issue, which aside from the above was not actually a
port issues, it just manifested itself as one. Turns out that IIS-7, as a
default, has a request filtering security features turned on. Part of this
request filtering feature is to automatically deny Double Escape Characters.
Many of the URLs in ITSM-7 use double escape characters such as the + sign.
You need to go to the MS kb article below, and follow the steps to allow double
escapes, and yup it does open up a security hole.

Scott, assuming that you are using IIS you might want to check the security
settings there. I have seen in the past that in a version upgrade Microsoft
will suddenly lock down things for “security reasons” which might be blocking
access. I can’t tell you exactly what to look for but if the Sandra’s
suggestions don’t help you might try opening the IIS control panel and looking
at things like directory security.    -Rick    From: Action Request System

Strange Port issue after P to V

2015-02-25 Thread Scott Hallenger
Hi we just did a  P to V of our itsm 7.0.1 system. Server is up and running now
as a VM along with the Mid-tier. When I try to access the mid-tier via this
URLhttp://mydnsname/shared/login.jsp; I am met with this error: The webpage
cannot be found. However, if I specify the port
http://mydnsname:8080/shared/login.jsp; it gets me to the login prompt and all
is well. What did I do wrong? Our server is Running IIS Tomcat.

So your saying the whole company 1000+ userscan use MyIT without having a
fixed or floating license applied. They will be approaching from a self service
perspective Submit query. Thus I can reserve my actual licenses for my IT

{}#yiv4112059441 They do not need an AR System license, basically they use a
Read license from that perspective.  However, you have to police who uses My IT
similarly to how SRM is licensed.  I believe it’s generally based on how many
people are working in your organization.  However, be aware that this is
something you’ll want to discuss with your BMC sales rep because there’s no
rule that it has to be a license for each worker.  In the case of my
organization, we create People records for folks that will never use anything
from I.T. but they are recorded in HR so my integration picks them up.

DB Copy Issue

2015-02-11 Thread Scott Hallenger
Wondering if anyone can offer some advice on this issue. Can  I copy our
production db to our dev server as an means of syncing dev to production. The
end goal being to make my dev look just like production. Our dev server does
not have the same number of licenses as production naturally. Is this something
that can be done with a basic db copy.

Re: Email engine out of memory error

2015-01-07 Thread Scott Hallenger
I also solved this problem a few years back by setting up a few mail box
filters on our mail server that limited the attachement size of mail coming in.
If a message came in that was over 5mb we would dump it via the filter and auto
reply back to the customer with an alternate method of delivering large files.
We also setup a job to restart the AR mail service every night at 4 am. After
doing this the issue went away for ever.

 Hello Hany,

 You don't mention the
version of Email Engine or whether you are on Windows, but
if you are on Windows one problem that exists with the email
engine at least in version 7.6.4 (and others as well) is
that there is a leading space in one of the registry
 keys.

 If you click Start
Run Regedit, then locate the registry keys at
 “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BMC
Remedy Email Engine - your server name
 1\Parameters”

 Check the
values in JVM Option Number 3 and 4. If you edit the value,
you may find that there is a leading space (the first
character is a space). If so remove that leading space, save
the value and restart email engine.

The effect of the leading space is that the
email engine JVM doesn't get the -Xmx option correctly
so runs with a default max heap size, which is not
sufficient and leads to these types of errors.

 I don't know if you
followed Monika's suggestion below to edit the
Java Runtime Environment Settings whether that
would also resolve this issue. I'm not clear on when and
how parameters set in the Java Control Panel are passed to
Java processes like email engine, so that suggestion may
also fix the issue as well.

 Thanks, hope that helps,

 Scott,Remedy server licenses are not
version specific, so the license you have for 7.1
'translates' to 8.1, as long as it's valid.
The only question is if you are eligible for upgrade by
having a valid support contract or not.

Scott,

With the occasional small exception, you can run earlier versions of
applications on later versions of the server without a problem.  The system is
designed for backward compatibility and with the expectation that customers
will regularly upgrade the AR System server and midtier and like system
components but may only periodically upgrade any application we supply.

And further, the AR System is a development environment that many customers
have built custom applications on.  We have to be able to upgrade the AR System
without impacting those applications.  And, again, with the exception of an
occasional small issue (OK, someone missed something and a bug crept in), this
works.

There have been one or two times where there was an issue large enough where
there was a known incompatibility that we announced and described how to
resolve that we just had to make a change to the system that produced an
incompatibility.  An example of that was when we found that the On Loaded
firing condition was firing at the wrong time so that data was not being
properly cleared on the screen by the Display operation.  Now the applications
actually had written some logic that was inadvertently using this bug and when
it was fixed, the firing condition of maybe a dozen active links throughout the
apps needed to be changed form On Loaded to On Display.  The operation was the
same, just the wrong condition was being used and the bug allowed the wrong
condition to work.  Our choice when this was found was to leave the logic
permanently broken in this area or to fix it.  Fixing it solved 10x the
problems that customers were having than the fix caused and it make the
behavior correct.  So, we decided to fix it and call out the change.

Even with this type of issue, no problem running the older version of ITSM on a
newer version of AR System -- just a few active links needed a minor change to
account for the behavior change due to the bug fix.

But, this type of change is unusual and has happened maybe twice in 20 years.
And the correction was provided and was easy to put in place in both cases.

You should have no issue running the ITSM 7.1 version on a 7.6 AR System
server. (other than the fact that the one issue I called out above was either
in 7.1 or 7.5 that we had the bug fix that did affect a few pieces of active
link workflow -- if it was 7.1 you are clear, if it was 7.5, you have a small
number of active links to change a firing condition on).  And, I am remote and
don't have access to the release notes to confirm which release this topic came
with.

So a Yes, it will work with a point qualification about one possible issue you
need to consider.

#yiv2787123608 Hi Jason,I think you have hit the nail on
the head, if we supply our IP we have no value anymore.
The other thing to note is that these take time to produce
so why would someone just give them away, that is
professional suicide.  Many of the partner companies make a
living out of having teams for testing with their own test
cases (large teams), again these take time to develop and
tweak to get correct so why would they give these away for
free where there is a business for them?  AMIGO was the BMC Professional
Services upgrade program, so why would they give away their
IP for free?  The older 7.1 Guides actually had
unit tests in them that could form the basis of testing,
however it is not difficult to formulate a plan as the tests
 are very generic in nature.

Re: ITSM 7 Defs Running on ARS 7.6

2014-11-25 Thread Scott Hallenger
Long story here but they use remedy every day, yet they dont want to
upgrade itsm they are happy enough with their itsm as it is. However, they
are running in to compliance issues outsode of remedy, like with MS. Again
long story, but I'm just checking if this could be a viable plan B. So I really
need some ipinions to ring in here.

You bet it is ok.  You have my blessing.
smarta$$ off  I have not specifically run ITSM
7.1 on ARS 7.6 but largely you should be ok.  There are
some behaviors that may have changed between ARS 7.1 and 7.6
and might give you a few minor surprises but for the most
part the def won't care.  I think if anything you might
run into more issues with 7.1 binaries and a 7.6 server.
Assignment Engine and Approval Engine might be interesting
since those are now AR components but were ITSM components
in earlier versions.  You might choose to no upgrade those
as part of the AR upgrade to keep them inline with version
that the ITSM def were designed around.
From your previous post it sounds
like you (or your customer) don't mind if it is an
unsupported configuration and are working more to keep the
lights on.  Really the only way to know will be to stand up
a sandbox and test thoroughly.  Although if you no longer
have support getting licenses for that sandbox could be
prohibitive.   Your customer might need to check what they
want to do (or not do) with reality.  How important is
Remedy to them?  Not important enough to pay for support
but important enough to try and keep it
 updated?

Re: Remedy Test Plan

2014-11-25 Thread Scott Hallenger
ITSM 7.1 is the same everywhere (until its customized of course). So it stands
to reason that there are 1000s of test docs out there that match up directly to
itsm 7 OOB. Its an old unsupported system now, no need to keep those docs so
close to the chest.

Well, those that have would not likely be
able to share those documents, because they would be the
proprietary property of either their consulting agency or

 That being said,
a generic plan would simply be to test the processes that
the ITSM products use.  Set up some configuration data, to
be sure that the back-end forms are populated.  Set up a
simple approval process, and be sure that you test that it
works.  Create a record via email, and test that outgoing
ones work, too.  Any plug-in (like LDAP or WS) that you use
should be tested.  Anything that runs as a separate daemon
or service should be tested.  Be sure that you can access
the CMDB from both the Atrium console and from
 ITSM.
 It's not
 rocket surgery.

Hi we are planning to do an over the  top
upgradde of our remedy win-2003 servers to win-2008
running ITSM 7.1. This means that we will have an existing
server running win server2003- with remedy itsm-7 already
installed. We are planning to upgrade the existing OS to
winserver 2008 and, basically not touch remedy. ITSM7 on
win  server 2008 is officially not supported according to
BMC.  However, my clients offshore team running the same
setup was  able to do this successfully with no problems.
Does anyone  here have any experience with this setup?
Should my client  not persue this path? Just wondering if
anyone else has been down this road. Please I hope this
 shows up on the  list.

Scott,

In my 30+ years in IT and a few positions found for me by headhunters, when I
am asked for my SS number or other that I would give an employer. I walk away.

I do understand that they need to do some type of checkup on the person they
want to put in front of a possible employer, but let them verify my public
resume.

The people who work at some of the headhunters change jobs faster than car
salesmen. So my trust goes only so far.

Once again something here does not pass the smell test.

me in his NDA doc. Sorry but I refused to sign his doc which he tried to
pressure me into signing like a car salesman or something. Did I over react?

Hello everyone I have not posted on the ARS list in years, but I find that I am
now in need of the brain power of this list.
I have been a developer for about 12-15 years, going all the way back to Remedy
2.0 and Baystone up to remedy ARS 7.6. Unfortunately I now find myself in a
situation in which I am derailed.
My company has switched off of remedy (and they regret it) and is now using an
application called CA Service Desk which is at least 10yers behind Remedy in
its evolution. I have been painfully working with CA Service Desk since October
of 2012, and have done almost nothing with Remedy. The remedy job market seem
pretty good lately and I have been trying to jump back in. I have had several
interviews for some great jobs but I  have bombed them all because my Remedy
detailed knowledge is way too cloudy (use it or lose it). When asked to provide
any kind of detailed knowledge I stumble because of my 9mth hiatus. So what I
am looking for is this. Is there some kind of free self test, self assessment,
or study guide that I can get my hands on to help bring my skills back to the
forefront. A simple list of 100 questions would help (anything would help).
Thanks in advance and I look forward to your replies. Oh and some final parting
advice. If anyone ever
tries to point you in the direction of CA Service Desk Run..Run as fast as
you can in the other direction.

5) What is a use for an Active Link Guide
Can be used to perform any repetitive actions. Say for table looping.
26) List all of the possible uses for guides. They were looking for walking

Table walk through is nothing but looping through a table.
27) What is walking tables?
Table walk through is nothing
28) when you use CMDBDriver.exe command line utility?
Used to push attributes created on cmdb classes to AST forms
31) When you use arsignal command line utility?
Arsignal utility contains multiple command line options. But mostly is used to
inform an ars server to load definitions from a database. Say if you are in
server group, perform changes( workflows, dome field etc) on the admin server
and send an arsignal to other servers to load definitions from the db
32) When you use runmacro command line utility?
it was used to calls macros from command line when using the aruser tool
34) How many table types are available in ARSystem Database and explain them?
T, H, B
T - Stores transaction/data values
H - history data
B - stores references to blob fields.

1) What is the difference between and Active Link and a Filter?
Active Link is initiated by a client action. A filter runs
server-side, independent of client input so can be used to enforce
rules, since the user has no control over whether they execute

2) What is a .def file used for?
To import and / or export Remedy objects

3) What is a .arx file?
Remedy data export file

4) Who is Doug Mueller?

5) What is a use for an Active Link Guide?

6) What type of field is the Worklog field?

7) Name two DBMSs in which Remedy ARS can run on top of?

   *  Modified Date—Date and time that the request was last modified.
   * Status—Current status of the request.

Returns the current menu

11) What is the function of DDE-Poke?
Deprecated - something to do with the User tool on windows sending

12) What are ar.ini and ar.conf files used for?
ar.ini - environmental preferences that need to be loaded at runtime,

No idea, all old versions.

15) How do you deploy your application on web?
Create a or import a deployable application, create an entry point (?)

16) When and in what situation you use workflow log, arerror.log,
arfilter.log, aresc.log?
wf log - order of operations executing, arerror.log - observe any

My advice would be to try to get a Job with a consulting firm that specializes
in rapid solutions. These places usually set you up on projects that last from
anywhere between a few weeks, to 6 months, to a year. Each time you finish a
project your on to another one. This is good because you will be thrown into
many different implementations quickly, and forced to learn their setup and how
they use the system. I have yet to ever see a company that doe not use ITSM
with ate least some level of customization, and there are ways to do that
safely. Often when you sign with a company like these they pay for your
training, because they can bill you out a a higher rate (Column would be a good
example).

This has prompted me to pose a similar question, I’ve been doing remedy custom
development for many years, since the 2.x days (those were painful) but I have
never really done any ITSM work. I think I need to get better acquainted with
ITSM and how it all works since that seems where the lion’s share of jobs are
these days.  I know that I could take some remedy training classes, but that is
a bit cost prohibitive for an individual to foot the expense, suggestions on
first steps?

if you can answer say 2/3 or 3/4 of those, you should be relatively good at
Remedy core administration, but a completely different list of questions would
be involved in determining ITSM capabilities of a developer., and those
questions don't do anything to determine what sort of process a person would
follow to customize an ITSM form.

Remedy Refresher needed

2013-07-26 Thread Scott Hallenger

LJ this list is great. Everyone keep them coming. Its not that I don't know the
answers. It that they are cloudy when asked to deliver the answer on the fly.
I'm very proficient in ARS and ITSM, but it not at the forefront of my mind.
Like on one interview last week for a $100hr 1-year to hire job, I  was asked
How do you delete entries via workflow?. I could not for the life of me
remember that the thing was called RUNPROCESS. Although I have ran the gambit
on the RUNPROCESS commands in my sleep. Thank you all this is really helpful
