Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SoftSqueeze + Dedicated PCi Sound Card
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a dedicated sound card, as it's kind of the opposite of what they do here. That said I'd vote for an enhancement request that SqueezePlay become ASIO aware (even though I don't have a sound card that can avoid resampling to 48kHz, or know much about ASIO in general). One of the great things about these devices is that they keep you from having to worry about bit perfect streaming being ASIO dependent, but I can appreciate that some people really want to make use of their expensive cards. But to put it in perspective; I'd rather see them spend months working on the SqueezePlay interface than a week on ASIO support. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57910 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SoftSqueeze + Dedicated PCi Sound Card
Here is the enhancement request mentioned above: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10483 I voted for this because I use SP a lot on the desktop, and if I get a card that can take advantage of ASIO it would be nice to have the feature available. Reading some past threads re: SoftSqueeze and ASIO I got the impression that beyond SQ, it might be possible to fine tune the latency to improve sync as well. Might have misread that though. Also, there will always be audiophiles who insist on using the long wire approach as seen above, but if you get them using SC they will probably also buy other peripheral players. And the noise Sean was referring to was the self generated noise of the DAC, E.g. the Wadia DAC. It maintains this level of self noise even when the signal is digitally attenuated, therefore there is the same amount of noise, and less signal, which equates to a lower SNR ratio. There is no way around it in digital attenuation, while analog attenuation OTOH attenuates the self generated noise of the device along with the signal. You shouldn't be setting the jumpers to avoid a software glitch or human error, if you care about sound quality, you should be setting them to get the highest possible performance out of the DAC. The same goes for the Wadia. Having finally seen a pic of the back* I was surprised that it didn't have any gain adjustments. It will definitely require some form of analog attenuation, because that amp could probably blow in-ceiling speakers pretty easily. I could be wrong, but I don't think the speaker level attenuation will provide the same protection as line level attenuation. In-line RCA attenuators of a level that keeps the speakers from blowing when the on-wall VC is maxed out and the Squeezebox's VC is at max as well may be necessary. I would probably try with just the wall VC first, and see if it being set to normal ranges attenuates the max signal from the SB enough. RCA attenuators could always be added later if needed. The pic also brings up the fact that the switches for global vs. local input are inconveniently located on the back of the unit. I really miss the objective of the required sound-quality, which would be my 1st requirement, regardless of the level of quality you decide on as the minimum... this requirement should be in your list. If, for some rooms, you just want to listen to talk-show radio, I agree that in-ceiling will do but if you love to swing to some good music in the kitchen or bedroom (!) you would be better of with decent wall-mount or floorstanding speakers. I believe you're projecting your own situation onto Xanadu. You have one system that you have to make do with, so understandably you want it to be audiophile quality. Xanadu said he wants to put _most_ of his SBR's in a closet, which to me means he probably has a more SQ-oriented system in his theater or listening room. If you replace the music-server with a NAS you will not be able to run iTunes, correct. But you didn't say that before. It will run on the server and you can download a free application (called Remote) for iPod-touch and iPhone that will allow you to use these devices as wifi-remote for the iTunes server. You can also use them to control SC with another application (iPeng). I'm not sure where iTunes came into play. To feed six zones unique music you'd need six sound cards in the server and six instances of iTunes running, with the ability to choose which sound card you're controlling via the Touch. I know it's possible with Squeezecenter and SoftSqueeze, but doubt it could be done with iTunes. I had to take another look at the Boom and to me it looks sleek and minimalistic enough. Okay, it's black and white and silver (how about electropolished stainless steel) versions would be nice but I'm pretty sure they will show up in time. The bedroom is the one place where I'd rather have a Boom (but probably not bookshelf/floorstanding speakers) than ceiling speakers. In the kitchen, bathroom, dining room, back porch, garage, atrium, etc.- I'd just as soon use ceiling or other nearly invisible speakers, if my house were properly set up for it. Even with your A+B requirements I would still not buy that amp. The universal input is more than an A/B selector. He can choose to send the same audio to SIX zones, not just A or B. AFAICT, it's a brilliant solution, and possibly the only one, for synchronizing six zones of internet radio. Using separate amps he's at the mercy of the buffers in his players. If you can fit speakers in the ceiling you surely can fit the SBRs in there too and find a small amp to go with it or even better active speakers. Not an option due to electrical codes. Where would it be plugged in, and how would you access the button on front? Also, most rooms will have some furniture like a closet where you could hide the very small SBR in. Speakers like the Mirage ones I mentioned before could go on top of the closet where you would hardly be able to see them and maybe even hide a mini-sub somewhere else if you need to feel the bass! If you would do that with ceiling-speakers, the chalk would be falling down like if it's snowing ;-) That's what he's going to do. Hide them in a closet. An added benefit of having them all together is that they will a) all get the same wireless reception, which I would hope will be good reception with the router placed nearby, or: b) he can run ethernet cable more easily, if his router and hubs are in there too. The subwoofer I can see too because I know where it is (up from the floor under the saloon table) but I have to point it out to guests who are looking at the satellites with big eyes and open mouths because they think the bass is just from those ha ha! Such is the nature of low frequencies. BTW, there are in-wall subwoofers on the market as well. Anyway, good luck with the install! Indeed. Just my experience...YMMV. Joe FTR there is more to it than dropping bits. Most importantly you could be risking your hearing/speakers if there is no analog attenuation between the Transporter and the amp, depending on the amp's sensitivity. Most amps will need to be regulated by some form of attenuation OTHER than digital, just in case there is a software glitch. The Transporter does provide jumpers for analog attenuation, but that makes your comparison to the SB3 volume control inaccurate. I'm a big fan of well recorded classic rock, but unfortunately not a lot of it exists. Even the MFSL version of Allman Brothers at Fillmore East is pretty terrible. So anyway, when I'm listening for differences I usually pick a couple of the not-so-well recorded albums, to see which option makes these things I love to hate more tolerable. OTOH, I doubt there a system in existence where Muddy Waters Folk Singer or Neil Young Unplugged doesn't sound great. Those, I believe, belong on the list of 'tracks to show off my system'. I would, however, highly recommend the great sounding BB King Live At The Appolo [GRP]. Beyond the great voice and guitar there is also a big band backing him up, which adds a lot of depth and usefulness as a listening tool. It must have been a two mic recording, if that's the right term, because every instrument really nestles into its own defined space in the soundstage, front to back as well as side to side. This, I believe, makes it a good test of speaker placement, and keeps sounding better until you have it just right. Setting the SB3 to max volume is essentially the same thing as having the volume fixed, so I don't see any reason to use the fixed setting. Even though I have a preamp in the chain I use the SB3's volume control for convenience, but for critical listening I set the SB3 to max and adjust at the preamp. Please, just to understand, could you explain why you advise to keep the SB3 volume at fixed? Most people keep it high because they do not want to lose any bits of resolution. Supposedly the volume algorithm, which includes padding to 24 bits to give headroom, is transparent down to a certain level (below 60/100 IIRC). Only at max volume, and with no replay gain I assume, will the original 16 bit signal be passed through the SB3. This allows e.g. a DTS signal to be passed through to a receiver that decodes those, or a DAC that decodes HDCD. Since the volume process is mostly/fully transparent, there's probably no audible difference between 90/100 and max, but there is more to the story. The SB3 has a fixed level of noise, and using the digital volume control decreases the signal but not the noise level. Therefore you have less SNR, and the more attenuation you apply the lower it goes. OTOH if the volume on the SB3 is maxed, and you instead use an analog volume control in preamp or external attenuator form (not sure how the lavry works), the volume and the noise will be attenuated together, and you maintain the SB3's SNR. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44989 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

DSD and PCM are fundamentally different encodings. You can't grab a DSD signal and send it over s/pdif without mathematically converting the signal. I'm not sure exactly how that's done, but it's more than just twiddling some bits. Wouldn't DVD-A be another fundamentally different stream, which has to be turned into something a DAC can understand? I would guess that it's so manufacturers of SACD players can buy the software to decode the DSDPCM, just like they can for HDCD, and therefore wouldn't even need to buy any SACD chips/hardware. Agreed, that is no doubt the situation under DMCA. I don't think you could convince a judge that you haven't circumvented the copy protection on the grounds that you applied a different form of copy protection (SCMS) to the converted signal. But lets say your player DOES do the conversion (as opposed to the referenced company who is obviously feeling guilty!), and you're only tapping an i2s stream. The latter is a mismatch, in that a maximum level noise burst would be 12.5dB louder than what you'd like to hear or have your speakers play. There is nothing magical about 1/4 on the volume bar either. The sound degradation is linear all the way from 99/100 to 1/100, as far as SNR goes anyway. You want the digital volume as close to 100/100 as possible for critical listening, and ideally spot-on, which will require some sort of variable (stepped) analog attenuation, even with the internal RCA attenuation, because your critical listening level changes according to time of day etc. Rather than preamp, though, you might try searching 'passive attenuator'. If I had a DSP sub I might like to try #1, but can't imagine how it would be done with inguz and a standard sub. -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36258 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

AndyC_772;206677 Wrote: For what it's worth, the DSP-A1 does have pre-out/power-in jumpers, maybe I should try these - though that would mean using the SB3's digital attenuation which means it's not really a fair comparison. After using the digital volume control to find the level of attenuation needed, you could use four resistors and the DIY article + Spreadsheet calculator, found in the Connecting To Power Amp Wiki, to make it a fair comparison. -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35642 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I agree with others RE listening to a lot of systems before laying out cash, which works out great because I also recommend that form of currency, and not running up the charge card while counting on the job you're getting (future tense). Perhaps blowing your first bonus or celebrating a corporate takeover would be a better strategy, so in the meantime you can save for more important things like your future/current daughter's sweet sixteen birthday party. Don't limit yourself to hiFi salons though. Find some people on audio forums in your area who have a system they'll let you audition. Or maybe there is a group that meets regularly? There is a lot of bang for the buck out there these days, but not a huge profit margin on such components, so you probably won't see things like panasonic digital receivers used with a squeezebox or $100 chip amps driving high efficiency single driver speakers, unless you seek out enthusiasts over salesmen. -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35766 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
