[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Idea for high-end Squeezebox/Transporter accessory
Having used the listening stations in Border's and other music stores, it just occurred to me: wouldn't it be great to have bar code scanner system for instant access to your music collection? Once you have ripped your entire collection to your music server, you would assign each album or compilation a dedicated bar code. You can use the original code on the CD or print out new ones for compilations or older recordings. Instead of pressing a lot of buttons on the remote, or accessing a tiny LCD screen on a Nokia Internet Tablet, one would simply grab the CD in question and scan the barcode. This would be great for recreating the old fashioned liner notes reading when listening to music, and particularly useful when friends are over. Just imagine what it would do for needledrops (digital files of LP records). Grab the original LP cover and scan the barcode and the music would start playing! I envision this as an extension to the present Slim Server software. If Slim Devices/Logitech would come up with something like this, it would literally trounce Sonos, Olive and the rest of the competition, IMO. -- crooner Customized dual chassis Super Squeezebox EAD DSP-7000 Series III DAC with HDCD and mods. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Idea for high-end Squeezebox/Transporter accessory
Yeah, but the accessory would complement the remote and/or laptop/tablet. I agree it can be pointless from the convenience point of view. The approach would particularly be useful for those with vast collections and that still have the CDs organized in shelves. I have actually stored away most of my CDs, but my prized LP collection is still at hand, and for those it would be just great to scan a cover and have the needledrop play instantly. One thing I have noticed with my current setup is that it takes some memorizing of my collection to decide what to play. Unless I have the laptop on to browse artwork, I no longer have a visual aid to decide what to listen. With a large collection, it starts to get a little complicated. Eventually, the folks at Logitech will come up with something much better than the remote, but less distracting than a Internet Tablet or Laptop. Also, given that CDs are rapidly becoming obsolete, I think it won't be long before we start seeing them as strictly collector's items, just like those classic 1950s Jazz LPs. In this case, you can recreate the whole CD (or LP) experience by simply taking the unit from the shelf and scanning it. The scanning device would, of course, be wireless. Being even more adventurous, I envisage a device that combines a LCD screen (a la Nokia Internet Tablet) with a built in scanning device. This way, the artwork stored on the server can be brought up on the screen after scanning, with other relevant information. The biggest improvements are in midrange clarity and articulation of the bass. Since they free the 2Ce Sigs from handling everything below 80 Hz, the dynamic range incrases tremendously. And the midrange doesn't have to work the midbass at all. Technically you are bi-amping the system. I was reading the specs on my Enlightened Audio Designs DSP-7000 series III DAC and the maximum jitter is listed at less than 10 picoseconds RMS (20 kHz). Impressive performance by any standard. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project
Well fellas, it's been almost a month since my last post. All this time I've been sourcing parts for my project. The hardest part to find was the 20 pin FPC cable for the display. It arrived yesterday. I have put all the pieces together for the initial test. It's looking pretty good methinks. The front panel is only a prototype I built. I'm having the display cutout done by Front Panel Express. It should arrive next week. In the meantime, this one has let me experiment with different display colors. I settled for a nice deep blue color. Matches great with the blue LED on the power supply unit. Since I am basically just using the digital outs, I added a 1:1 pulse transformer and BNC connector. The analog stage has new Neutrix connectors, but otherwise stock Notice the extensive shielding of the display area. I am also using ERS (RFI/EMI reducing sheets) material liberally inside the case of both main unit and power supply. New IXYS HEXFRED diodes were added to the PS unit, along with a Auricap film bypass for the smoothing capacitors. The power connection is via high quality XLR Neutrix connections. I custom made a cable using Neutrix connectors and silver teflon wiring. A couple of TDK ferrite snap-in cores were added to the cable. This thing is sounding fantastic. Actually, using a portable AM radio to spot RFI sources is well documented. It is the simplest way to determine this type of interference. I think your comments about AM listening preferences came a little heavy handed. No one is talking about using the radio for entertainment purposes. The consensus is that any RFI causing interruption of AM reception will most likely affect the low level audio circuits. Well... get a portable AM radio and place it close to the SB's Unifive SMPS. Reception will be impossible. The FCC rules part 15C is very relaxed about RFI interference, unfortunately. This is the same FCC that also approved broadband over power lines, blacking out all the HF spectrum used for ham communications. Easy to get the picture here.. Audio signals are very delicate. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project
Well... I'm open to suggestions! I just thought replacing the internal switcher inside the SB2 would improve things a bit. Although in practice I can't hear any difference between the SB3 and SB2 digital outs going to my DAC60. Perhaps Patrick would like to enlighten us on the best place in the SB circuit to enable the Super Regulator. -- crooner SB2 SB3 with Custom Linear Power Supply Lite Audio DAC-60 Tube DAC VPI Scout with Benz Micro Glider M2 Audio Research PH3, SP16L and VS110 Vandersteen 2Ce signatures, 2W subwoofer. crooner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3379 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34291 ___ audiophiles mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project
Good point! I'm definitely going for a two box approach as I stated in an earlier post. I will use a couple of enclosures from DIYenclosures.com. The power supply enclosure should arrive tomorrow. Should keep me busy this weekend :-) Yesterday, I was at my local dealer (Jeff's Sound Values) and the owner showed me a sheet of special material that's supposed to filter EMI/RFI emissions. This adhesive material can go inside the chassis or wrapped around certain parts such as analog and digital connections. It's non conductive. I forgot to ask the exact name of the thing, but I'll research it for my project. tyler_durden;194776 Wrote: Unless you box it up in mu-metal, the metal case will not prevent magnetic fields such as those from that big power supply transformer from flying about. Metal shields are good for shielding against electric fields. The difference is that electric fields induce voltages (primarily) in high Z circuits through capacitive coupling while magnetic fields induce currents (primarily) in low Z circuits through, you guessed it- inductive coupling. That is one reason why I suggested using a power supply more in line with what the circuit actually requires. That big supply transformer has a much larger leakage field around it than a smaller one and the only practical way to shield it is to keep it as far away from the audio circuits as possible. This is why many resort to putting power supplies in boxes separate from the audio circuits. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project
And thanks for your Super Regulator offer. I'd love to try one of those. What's the voltage output? I was thinking of using it in place of the switching 3.3 V supply. Yesterday I took the covers off the SB2 to inspect the innards. I must say I'm impressed. The integration on this is incredible. Also, it is obvious that great care was taken to miminize RFI/EMI interference by carefully routing the PCB traces and keeping them very short. The absence of any wires aside from the antenna and display connections is excellent design practice. So, there's an obvious advantage in using SMD components in this regard. It's not just about manufacturing ease. The tiny caps and resistors do allow for shorter signal paths and better noise rejection. Now that I've seen the innards of the SB2, I'm a little weary of the massive modifications done by the well known outfits. The replacement caps often have long leads that are hard to dress on the PCB. I would venture the benefits of these high-performance parts are somewhat negated by the long leads. I am planning to replace the RCA jacks with something better. But even by doing this, you are introducing some extra wire in the signal path. The original jacks are soldered directly on the board... I'm figuring that even a straight transfer to a larger enclosure is going to have sonic benefits, even proper care is taken. For instance, the display PCB can be shielded from the rest of the electronics. This should prevent stray RFI emissions from entering the audio circuits. -- crooner SB2 SB3 with Custom Linear Power Supply Lite Audio DAC-60 Tube DAC VPI Scout with Benz Micro Glider M2 Audio Research PH3, SP16L and VS110 Vandersteen 2Ce signatures, 2W subwoofer. crooner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3379 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34291 ___ audiophiles mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project
Got my Squeezebox 2 today. Man that was fast! The seller was in Colorado and he sent it DHL Express, for just $10 SH. Very nice of him. The unit is in mint condition, virtually brand new. It looks so nice that I almost feel guilty about taking it apart. The Squeezebox 2 is the unit that pretty much started it all, in the audiophile sense. Perhaps a collectible in the future? I know Sean Adams at only 27 is quickly becoming an icon and I'm sure he'll be joining the likes of John Curl, Jim Bongiorno, Steve McCormack and others. If he hasn't already! I have read a lot about the SB2's appearance, comparing it to an alarm clock and such. But you know what? Looks great in person! The rubbery plastic of the case is great. Even the remote has that rubbery plastic on it. Audio Research remotes are also rubber coated. So perhaps the cheapie remote thing started when the SB3 was released. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD red book de-emphasis?
I'm lucky to have an old Mitsubishi DP-101 first generation CD player, made in 1983. It has a nifty emphasis indicator light. I used it to check all my collection when I was ripping it last year. EAC, unfortunately, doesn't really detect the emphasis flag, even though it has a column for it on the main window. I remember I had to download an ancient CD ripper that would digitally apply the de-emphasis curve to the ripped WAVs. Can't remember the name of it. It was from the late 1990s. A free download. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted it from my HD during a clean-up...
