[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree Maker FTM 16 Problem
Bill and others, We tried what you sent to us as well as one we got off the net. We managed to install FTM but it only shows one very short family file. It does not list all the all the family files I originally had and the really BIG and most IMPORTANT one. I have lost the last 2 1/2 years of what I put on FTM16 on my Windows 7 computer. I had a backup but for some reason that got erased when we were trying to figure out what was wrong with Windows 7. Unfortunately we had the backup plugged in when we were doing this and it erased everything on the disk. Note to self: NEVER do this again!! I do have all the previous 8 years of entries on my old Windows XP computer which we put on a memory stick and have been trying reinstall on my Windows 7 computer ; it looks like FTM is installed??? but it only shows this one file which only has 5 names on it!! Any other ideas anyone?? Thank you. Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree mechanics and design
It is my understanding by reading various media that Ancestry.com is for sale and may soon be bought out. There are a couple of companies interested in purchasing it and I do not know if they are American companies or not and, if not, wonder if they will keep main offices in this country. I believe they now have an international office in Ireland. Also, will be interesting what, if any, changes will be made if/when they are bought out. I have enjoyed using Ancestry.com for many years now but this will be my last renewal as I don't use it in my research anymore, mainly to help others on this list and other lists and it is no longer cost effective for me. Now that FHC is putting many of its records on line I use it more and more as a resource, free for now, but wonder if it will remain the same in the future. [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker transferring data question
I finally found the time to transfer my updated Family Tree Maker family file to my mini from my laptop which I had not updated since we set up the computer in 1911. In transferring the info, the file on the mini said it could not open and copy because there was a file open. I do not know what they are talking about as there is no file open as far as I am concerned so that is my first problem. In the meantime, it let me open and copy and called the new file by same name No. 2 So now I have 2 FTW family files the old one without the updated info and the new one with all the new info I had input into my laptop and they are both now on my mini. I know this occupies a lot of space to have 2 and am considering the deleting first one and keeping the 2nd but am a little hesitant to do so. I cannot figure out what they mean that there is a file open on the first one when we tried to open and replace (1) instead of open and copy (2). Hope you understand all of this. Second, I did my grandson in law's genealogy before he married my granddaughter in a FTW separate file. Now I would like to merge the two files. I made sure his name and my granddaughter's name are exactly the same in both files. How do I go about merging these two FTW files? Thank you. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel Rego Cabral
Thank you for your replies. I found 3 or 4 Manuel Cabral's living in Tiverton in the census records. I have no idea which is the right one. I know the mother of the child and her family moved to New Bedford shortly after the birth of the child which makes me wonder if he was already married as he did not marry her and I would imagine her father would have probably insisted on this. Manuel Rego Cabral born in Sao Miguel is listed as the father on her baptism record. So far I have not found a birth record and it seems they used her baptism record to later obtain a marriage license. Will have to do more searching on this one. Is there a 1919 Tiverton RI directory? Azores came to US 1870. ch: Mary b. Apr. 1885; Annie b. July 1886; Manuel b. Dec. 1887; Joe b. May 1889; Louie b. Oct. 1890; Frank b. Nov 1892; Will b. Apr 1894; George b. Feb. 1897; Fortune (son) b. I agree with you, George. That is just not a nice thing to do - so from now have them fit into your schedule - especially with the cost of gas these days. I have helped someone on the list with US records a few times but when I ask that person for help with they say will look into it and I never hear from them again, not even to say they checked into it and found nothing, so I no longer will help them. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA Summer Sale
Richard, Thanks for the sale update. What is the difference between the Y-DNA 67 marker at $199 and the FamilyFinder at $199? By the way, I attended a wonderful conference Friday, unfortunately, could not return Saturday, and Stephen Morse gave a wonderful, informative, easy to understand, presentation on DNA. I am finally beginning to understand it.I think. I also attended a FamilySearch presentation and learned much there and used that info to find some of my ancestors records from Croatia. Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] 2 for 1 deal to Boston - Sao Miguel - November - SATA
Last week Southwest had a Fall sale (they usually post their sales every Tuesday, I signed up on their site for notification) and I was able to get a fare from Sacramento to Manchester NH (I'm sure it was probably the same price or close to it for Boston) for the end of September 2012 for $306.80 RT. I like Southwest because if you have to cancel, they don't give you a refund, unless you buy the senior fare, but they do give you a credit for the amount and you have to use it one year from the date you made the reservation, which is exactly what I did as I had a reservation to Salt Lake to attend Cheri's conference which I had to cancel last minute so I used these credits. Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Immigrant Ships
In helping others research, I found one who came to the US in the late 1860's and it gave the reason they were coming here. Also, I have court documents of another case where they left Faial illegally (a ship from Faial chased their ship and didn't catch them - probably paid off) and entered the US illegally (under dark of night) with 41 passengers who were sent ashore on smaller vessels and took carts, trains, etc. to their destinations. There is no manifest of the passengers. So if your ancestor was on this ship, there is no way you would ever find him/her listed on a manifest. The only way they got caught in the US is one of the male passengers went into a bar shortly after landing and bragged about it and they charged the captain who ended up paying a $2000 fine. Mike, I checked your family in 1920 censusit says Maria is married (not a widow, so either she did not know he died or he moved away)William is 1 year old and they live on Rockland Street, S. Dartmouth. Joseph Pine's 1917 WWI Draft Registration record says he is living on Rockland St. South Dartmouth. Correction, it says he has a throat affection whatever that means? Since he only lists a wife (no name) and lists no children and Wm. was born in 1918, it is possible this is him. Interesting Mary was bookkeeper at Col. Green Estate. A few years back, my cousin got married on a private beach in the area and we could see the Col. Green Estate from the beach. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] great grandpa help
Mike, There is a Joe C. Pine WWI Draft Registration Record (1917) living in Alameda County CA. He was born April 14, 1892 in Fayal, Azores. He had a wife named Rose. There is a 1951 Naturalization Card for this Joseph Correia Pine in Newark CA. Here it says he was born April 14, 1892. There is a Joseph Pine b. April 23, 1894 living in South Dartmouth in 1917 also b. in Fayal. It says he has a thoat affliction and he was working at the Gosnold Mills. It says he is married. There's a Joseph Pine b. Sept. 15, 1892 in Sao Miguel, Azores, living in New Bedford in 1917 but his one says he is single. There are several Jose Pinheiro Draft Registration Records living in CA/MA. Then there is this ship's listName: Jose S Pinheiro Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893 Birthplace: Salao?, Fayal Azores Gender: Male Ethnic Background: Portuguese Arrival Date: 12 Sep 1912 Port of Arrival: Providence, Rhode Island Port of Departure: Horta, Fayal, Azores, Portugal Ship Name: Roma Leaving his father Manuel Furtado da Rosa, Salao, Fayal, Azores- going to his brother in law Luiz Lopes, Providence RI Do you know if he had a middle name? How sure are you that he died? Maybe she just left him and returned home? I just helped a girl with her ancestor and a few months ago she found out he had a 2nd family back East before he married her ggrandmother. She said he never spoke of this first wife and children. You can imagine she was elated to find her new found family. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] New Topic. Differance in first names
Richard and Chris, My relatives in Sweden have ordered films from the FHC and it takes a little longer and maybe a little more money to receive them but he has been able to access the films he was interested in about his/my family from Croatia/Italy. I believe you can order them online on the FHC site to be sent to the local FHC. However, remember that Joao Ventura can probably obtain this information ( him at a minimal charge and you don't pay until he finds them and I believe he has paypal now. Might be a lot less expensive alternative than ordering films and going to FHC to view them. Just a thought. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Pam, Good luck on this one. I have been researching Ireland for quite some time now and I have the names of the 3 sisters who came to the US ca 1870 and the town they came from but cannot get past that as the surname is a popular one in Ireland. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] any ideas where to look next
Michael, Do you have their obits from New Bedford Public Library (2nd floor)? Did they belong to a local insurance society - this might be listed in the obit and it might give you where he came from? Someone on this list, her name slips my mind, might be able to help you with this. Have you checked this site https://news.arcasearch.com/usmaums/ which is UMass Dartmouth Newspapers Archives, choose Diario de Noticias, as that is the local New Bedford area one. I assume you have his ship's manifest (which did not list where he came from?) Did you get their marriage record from Vital Records in NB across the street from the Library. You have to pay $15-20 for this - BUT tell them you want it ONLY if they will give you the papers they filled out to obtain the license - don't do it just for a copy of the marriage certificate (unless you want it but info is very limited on it). There is a lot more info on the papers they filled out. Hopefully, the info you seek is there. It won't give you the parish, but it might (hopefully) give you the village. Depending on who you get there, they might not want to do this as I think they have to go to the basement of something to do it but if you ask VERY, VERY nicely, they usually oblige. They are very nice at both Library and Vitals. E California -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Santa Cruz, Graciosa Silvas, Pachecos, Espinolas and de Mellos
Cheryl, Ship Madonna sailing from Angra de Heroismo, Terceira, August 21, 1913, arriving Providence RI Aug. 27, 1913, Cecelia Lucia Silva (Cecilia Luiza Silva on Ancestry index) 17, leaving her mother Maria Silva, Praia, Graciosa, going to her sister Maria L. Silva 71 River or Rivet Street, NB. Born in Praia, Graciosa. Written on the manifest also says Am. Consul St. Michaels 11/7/1928 (I think she must have returned to the Azores for a visit and was applying to return to the US). With this info, you should be able to find her on the Passportes CCA site and that should list her parents IF Terceira is listed there for that time frame on CCA. So her sister Maria Silva was already in the US I can email you the manifest from Ancestry if you would like. Would she have been married (what would be her married name?) or single by 1928 as that would help find her manifest for that date? So now you have her mother's name. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] who's baby
Michael, Re St. John's Cemetery, I know of cases where sometimes they were buried with cousins, in-laws, etc. I just had a cousin buried at St. John's not too long ago and I believe the gravesite was owned by one of her in-laws or a cousin or some such who had been buried there years ago but there was still an available plot. My aunt's husband is buried in our family plot...I have no idea why my aunt, other than the fact she wanted her husband buried with her, had him buried there as the spaces were suppose to be reserved for immediate family members. I know there are still 2 available plots and I am told her daughters will be buried in them. I know my mom and her other living sister had to give permission to my aunt to use these spaces quite a few years ago. I also have a brother buried with them and he has a different surname than the owner of the plots (my grandfather) and since my mom had remarried, we hyphenated both her marriage names to make the connection. Also, my great-grandmother's name is on the stone but she is not buried there. I was told way back when they would do this and send the body back to Portugal for burial. [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Question..again
First of all, our cousin had 1-12 match, 60-25 matches, 18-37 matches - so far only one with the same surname. I am making some progress (not Portuguese) and we match only this one person with the same surname on 12/25/37 - so am I correct in assuming that this is a pretty good match. They have not sent me their genealogy so I managed to do it myself and from my research, they share randfather's with my husband. I have since managed to contact 3 more researchers of this same family name, none to our direct line but to a couple of the same line we DNA matched and another to one of the other brothers of this line. They are going to participate in the DNA study and this should solidify my findings...I assume. My questions...do you think this one 12/25/37 same surname is a pretty good match and should we now proceed to a 67 upgrade? O wait until the other new found cousins test? I wish I could understand this DNA stuff but my weary brain just cannot get a grasp on it. I have been at this family almost 10 years now and this is my first BIG breakthrough. Thank you all for your replies. Someone did send me the marriage record. Not the date I was looking for but maybe she was his 2nd wifeI have been searching Ancestry trees, etc. and have finally tied into other family members. Many of the records I have tried to obtain were burned with the courthouse. Some courthouses in the South burned 3 times or more! My husband's cousin (same surname) did do a DNA study for us and he matches someone who we contacted and he replied but he did not furnish any genealogy and has since been silent but I was finally able to find his family and I now know my husband's mother shares the same gggrandparents (not sure of their names). She is from the brother James and he is from the brother John. My husband's cousin matched this same person on 12, 25 and 37 markers so we know they are from the same family. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hayward (CA) City Directories
Carol, Have you tried online Ask A Librarian for the Boston Public Library (Reference Department)? They might be able to help you and please offer to send and send a donation (I usually send $5 or $10 or they will tell you if their is a charge) to the Library for their help when you do email them. http://www.bpl.org/contact/ E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Álvaro de Amorim Borges, San Jose, Ponta Delgada, SM
Anyone related to this person, Alvaro de Amorim Borges? He is listed a godfather to our latest find as working in Customs in Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada in 1889. There is no godmother listed. I'm beginning to think they picked whoever was available for godparent(s) at the time. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Álvaro de Amorim Borges, San Jose, Ponta Delgada, SM
Thanks, Hermano. I don't have either of these books. I wonder if he might have adopted our Alvaro as I can find no trace of our Alvaro other than his baptism record and it seems he was named after Mr. Borges. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel?
Mary, When I saw Rio Janeira on my grandparent's US marriage record for my grandmother's place of birth I thought it might be Ribinheira(sp?) somewhere in the Azores and my English grandfather who married her might have misunderstood although he did speak Portuguese due to his travels. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel?
Well, my grandmother's marriage record says she was born in Rio Janeira and for the life of me and Joao Ventura we have not been able to find her baptism record ca 1883-85. So this is interesting to me. Of course, her father's name is partially incorrect on the recordbut her mother's is correct. Is there really a Rio De Janeiro in Sao Miguel?? She came to the US ca 1899 illegally and that is another very interesting and long story. Duane, Have you tried using Joao Ventura to do this research for you. His charges are very affordable and his turn around very fast and he is very familiar with these records.
