Andrew,

Since you ordered a YDNA test for your grandfather, he's an existing
customer. If you ordered a YDNA on yourself, you'd be a new customer (and a
different person than your grandfather) so you would receive your own kit
number.

No, I would not order a YDNA test for yourself. It *should* be identical,
however, mutations are random events that happen. Since your grandfather is
the older generation, you want to work with his DNA. Wait until it comes in
and see if he has any good YDNA matches. FTDNA will have another sale at
the end of the year.

It looks like they are having a hard time with your grandfather's Family
Finder. It appears that they found a Y chromosome and are extracting that.
Both tests are within the given processing time, so you get to sit and wait.

I wanted to find out from you if it is worthwhile ordering a Y-DNA test for 
myself to help find out more about who my great-great grandfather was on my 
paternal line.  I already ordered an submitted a Y-DNA test on behalf of my 
paternal grandfather to try to figure this out.  Would having a Y-DNA test 
for myself help to solve this mystery or no? Basically, I'm asking are two 
paternal tests on the same line better than one?

If I do order a YDNA test, would I receive my own kit number?

In regards to shipping out a new kit, they always pull the vials and work
from that first. If both vials fail, they will mail out a new kit so the
testee can swab. You didn't say the person was deceased, so I'm assuming

not match on the Y-DNA and I am hoping they will match somehow on the
Family Finder test??  The cousin is descended from a male McNealmy
husband from a female McNeal. The cousin tested a few years ago and they

If you have already ordered before, but want a different type of DNA test,
log into your own DNA page (or the relative's page that you manage) and

Thanks!  

Using Chrome, I observed the "Submit" button change to "Sent" after 
clicking.  However, if I exited and then returned to the page, the "Submit" 
button would reappear, and there was no indication that the coupon wasn't 
available to me to use.  In fact, if you received 4 coupons, then it's 
possible to gift coupons more often than once from an account.  Most likely 
not, but...

Depends on your goal.  If you want to focus on one line only and have
access to a male relative from that line, then you would want a Y-DNA
test.  If you want to focus on your mother's mother's mother's line (all
women - that one line only), you'd want an mtDNA test (which yields more
anthropological information generally).  If you want a cross section of
your entire pedigree going back about 200 years from the age of the testee,
then you want Family Finder.  Since I had access to both of my parents, I
had them take the Family Finder test (2 separate tests that I paid for).  I
got more information that way.

DNA for genealogy has been out since 2000.  Almost all genealogical
conferences have speakers on DNA.  Local genealogy societies also have DNA
speakers at their meetings.  Although these books are now out of date, the
basic way DNA works can be obtained from there: Trace Your Roots with DNA
by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Ann Turner and Genealogy and DNA by
Colleen Fitzpatrick.

I'm interested in doing both lines. Both of my parents are deceased. Do I 
understand correctly that the testee should be the oldest person you can 
find? For example, on my mother's side I could do her sister who is 89 yrs. 
old and on my father's side I could do my brother who is 70 yrs. old?

Yes, if you have access to your parents' siblings that is the better
choice.

Since I don't know your goal, I'd advise you to do a Family Finder on the
89 year old now with this sale.  You can order mtDNA on her later.

If you have the money, you could do the Family Finder on the 70 year old
(Family Finder is usually $289 and when they put it on sale it the past, it
was $199, so this sale of $169 is really good).  If you don't have the
money right now, then wait for another sale.  If you do the Family Finder
on this uncle, you can add on his Y-DNA or mtDNA later on as well.

I'm just basing this off the ages of 89 and 70 - not knowing anything else
about them. For all I know, the 70 year old may not be in as good of health
as the 89 year old.

You'll need to put together a pedigree chart and have it uploaded to FTDNA
when the results come in.  You'll get more information on that when you
purchase a test and you get the welcome letter.

Of course, you are not the exact same as your siblings. One of you might have inherited different DNA from your parents. If you figure that you get 50% of your DNA from each parent, you can flip that around and say you lose half the DNA from each of your parents. So what you lose might not have been lost by one of your siblings. I hope that makes sense.In the results from the Family Finder test, which is certainly the one I recommend and what most people start with these days, your DNA matches could vary from one of your siblings. Nell,I must not have been clear enough.I got tested with Family Finder as well as mt-DNA representing my mother's maternal line.I never got the Y-DNA test because my father did it and there is no reason I can see to duplicate that.What I meant to say is that I have never had one of my siblings get tested to see if their results are different than mine.For me, this is a very exciting field of genealogy and I encourage everyone to get one or more of these DNA tests. Hi Cheri, I had my brother do the YDNA test and then upgraded it once (I 
think to YDNA37 or 67?) If I were interested in chosing one of the choices 
on sale, (perhaps the Family Finder) would it be considered an upgrade? or 
a brand new test? Sorry...I know...I'm one of those last minute shoppers

For those who joined this list in the last couple of days, here's a brief
rundown (I hope).

There are a few different companies for DNA testing.  For various reasons,
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) was chosen.  FTDNA allows for administrators (all
volunteers) to create projects and monitor them and help out members.  A
project was created for Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, and
Brazil (spelled as Brasil). To encourage people to join projects, FTDNA has
a slight discount when a DNA test is ordered through a project.

Here's a brief run down on the 3 types of testing that are used in
genealogy.

Y-DNA:  Isolates one line: The father's father's father's line, all the way
back.  All men. A male must take this test, as only men have a Y
chromosome.  The top of a man's pedigree chart.  If a 37 or 67 markers test
is ordered, you have the potential to make genealogical matches. If you are
not a male, you will have to find a male relative to take this test.

mtDNA: Isolates one line: The mother's mother's mother's line, all the way
back.  All women.  Either men or women can take this type of test. The
bottom of the pedigree chart.  Most information obtained from mtDNA is
anthropological in nature. It's hard to get a genealogy match unless you
happen to have a rare mutation.

Autosomal DNA (Family Finder):  Covers ALL your lines on your pedigree
going back about 200 years from your birth.  So if you were born in the
1940s, this could find relatives who descend from a couple born in the
1740s. You need to have a pretty good pedigree without too many unknowns
(like a Sarah Elizabeth , Mary Margaret , etc).  My dad is half
Portuguese and I have more success with his Family Finder than I do with my
mom's.  My mom's lines have a lot of Sarah Elizabeth  and Mary Margaret
 as well as a lot of lines stopping in the early 1800s, so it's harder
for me to connect her with others, but I keep chipping away.  It's takes
more time on hers.  I can figure out my dad's a little more easily as he's
half Portuguese and his lines are pretty well documented back to the 1730s.

Bob,You can also upgrade to the 67 or 111 market Y-DNA test.We just did this for my father. Cheri,

I was thinking of ordering one the tests for myself and my mom and
uncles. I want try and get the most detailed results..do you think it
is worth getting the Y-DNA111 or should I go for the Y-DNA67 and try
and upgrade at a later time when there are better deals or the price
goes down?

My azores side is from my mom's father..both of his grandparents were
from the azores. Would any DNA testing (Y-DNA for myself and my
uncles, mtDNA for my mom)  help tighten which islands they were
from..particularly my grandfather's grandpa who we believe was from
Sao Jorge but I haven't been able to find any records of him yet.

What kind of information would the Autosomal DNA test provide if
myself, uncles or mom were select it? And is the Mitochondrial
Sequence (FMS) test a good one to order?

Obviously I cannot get all of these now because of budget limitations,
but what do you think a good, fairly high resolution tests would be to
start with?
